Considering the high organic matter contents and pollutants in sewage sludge (SS) and food waste (FW), seeking green and effective technology for energy recovery and pollutant control is a big challenge. In this study, we proposed a integrated technology combing SS mass separation by hydrothermal pretreatment, methane production from co-digestion of hydrothermally treated sewage sludge (HSS) centrate and FW, and biochar production from co-pyrolysis of HSS cake and digestate with heavy metal immobilization for synergistic utilization of SS and FW. The results showed that the co-digestion of HSS centrate with FW reduced the NH-N concentration and promoted volatile fatty acids conversion, leading to a more robust anaerobic system for better methane generation.

Treating food waste using black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) is widely regarded as a promising nature-based measure. This study explored the influence of food waste particle sizes on substrate properties and its subsequent effects on bioconversion efficiency and gut microbiota. The results indicated that particle sizes mainly ranging from 4 mm to 10 mm (T1) significantly increased the weight loss rate of food waste by 35 % and larval biomass by 38 % compared to those in T4 (particle sizes mostly less than 2 mm) and promoted the bioconversion of carbon and nitrogen into larvae and gases.

In this paper, we investigate a reaction-diffusion model incorporating dynamic variables for nutrient, phytoplankton, and zooplankton. Moreover, we account for the impact of time delay in the growth of phytoplankton following nutrient uptake. Our theoretical analysis reveals that the time delay can trigger the emergence of persistent oscillations in the model via a Hopf bifurcation.

Studies on compost dissolved organic matter (DOM) previously focus on its composition and humification, without considering DOM bioavailability to understand compost fertility. To decipher the fertility basis of compost, DOM bioavailability in thermophilic compost (TC) and vermicompost (VC) was investigated and linked with its molecular composition. Results showed that DOM bioavailability of VC (36 % BDOC) was generally higher than that of TC (22 % BDOC) due to containing more tannin-like substances.

In this paper, we investigate a stochastic nutrient-plankton model with impulsive control of the nutrient concentration and zooplankton population. Analytically, we find that the population size is nonnegative for a sufficiently long time. We derive some sufficient conditions for the existence of stable periodic oscillations, which indicate that the plankton populations will behave periodically.

China's reliance on aquaculture has intensified to satisfy the growing human demand for high-quality animal protein, making it the only country whose aquaculture production has greatly exceeded that of capture fishery for a long time. Previous studies have shown that phosphorus (P) is a limiting nutrient for freshwater eutrophication; therefore, the quantification of P flows in freshwater aquaculture is of great importance for improving aquaculture efficiency and reducing environmental pollution. The rice-crayfish (RC) integrated pattern has been developed vigorously in China, but how it affects the nitrogen (N) runoff loss and distribution status during rice production is still poorly studied. Based on this, we selected two types of irrigation and drainage units (IDUs), which adopted the traditional rice-wheat (RW) rotation pattern and burgeoning RC rotation pattern separately, to investigate the effect of the RC pattern on N runoff loss, inorganic N distribution and N balance of the IDU. The results showed that there was a 241 kg ha yr and 135 kg ha yr N surplus achieved under RW and RC, respectively.

Environmental stochasticity and toxin-producing phytoplankton (TPP) are the key factors that affect the aquatic ecosystems. To investigate the effects of environmental stochasticity and TPP on the dynamics of plankton populations, a stochastic phytoplankton-zooplankton system with two TPP is studied theoretically and numerically in this paper. Theoretically, we first prove that the system possesses a unique and global positive solution with positive initial values, and then derive some sufficient conditions guaranteeing the extinction and persistence in the mean of the system.

Studying the influence of precipitation patterns on plant community diversity, soil C:N:P ecological stoichiometric characteristics, and the relationships between key soil factors and plant community diversity is of great significance for the protection of plant community diversity in desert grasslands. This paper was studied in the desert steppe of the west of Loess Plateau using a three-year precipitation manipulation experiment (40% reduction in precipitation, 20% reduction in precipitation, natural precipitation, 20% increase in precipitation, and 40% increase in precipitation), explored the influence of changes in precipitation in dry and wet years on the diversity of plant community and soil C:N:P ecological stoichiometric characteristics. The life cycle impacts of treatment of typical oil-based drill cuttings (OBDCs) using three low-temperature thermal desorption (LTTD)-based systems, including thermomechanical cuttings cleaner (TCC), screw-type dryer (STD), and rotary drum dryer (RDD), were explored with a case study in British Columbia, Canada. Two energy supply scenarios, including diesel generator-based onsite (scenario i) and hydropower-based offsite (scenario ii) treatments, were considered in the assessment. The results show that RDD generated the lowest life cycle impacts in terms of damages to human health, ecosystems, and resources in scenario i.
