Temporal dynamics of Grime's CSR strategies in plant communities during 60 years of succession.

Ecol Lett

June 2024

Zhejiang Tiantong Forest Ecosystem National Observation and Research Station, Zhejiang Zhoushan Island Ecosystem Observation and Research Station, Institute of Eco-Chongming, School of Ecological and Environmental Sciences, East China Normal University, Shanghai, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Grime's CSR theory suggests that during secondary succession, plant communities evolve from ruderal (quick-growing) to stress-tolerant species, but this idea has not been thoroughly tested with long-term data.
  • Using 60 years of data on old-field succession, the study found that while communities generally shifted from ruderal to stress-tolerant strategies, the conditions at abandonment significantly influenced early succession trajectories.
  • The research also highlighted a distinct difference between alien and native species, with aliens starting similar but shifting more toward ruderal strategies over time, indicating that both initial conditions and species origin are critical in understanding plant community dynamics.

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Green Chemistry and Chemical Processes, State Key Laboratory of Petroleum Molecular & Process Engineering, School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, East China Normal University, North Zhongshan Rd. 3663, Shanghai 200062, China.

Zeolite nanosheets with an extremely thin thickness featuring both unique pore systems and low diffusion resistance have the potential to achieve enhanced catalytic performance in the conversion of bulky molecular biomass. The preparation of unit-cell level nanosheets generally requires complex and costly multifunctional surfactants or an organic structure-directing agent (OSDA). Commercially available and environmentally friendly ionic liquids can also direct the structure of zeolite nanosheets by π-π stacking when these kinds of OSDA are used in large amount.

Relaxation of Spring Festival Firework Regulations Leads to a Deterioration in Air Quality.

Environ Sci Technol

June 2024

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Particle Pollution and Prevention (LAP3), Department of Environmental Science & Engineering, Institute of Atmospheric Sciences, Fudan University, Shanghai 200438, China.

The relaxation of restrictions on Chinese Spring Festival (SF) firework displays in certain regions has raised concerns due to intensive emissions exacerbating air quality deterioration. To evaluate the impacts of fireworks on air quality, a comparative investigation was conducted in a city between 2022 (restricted fireworks) and 2023 SF (unrestricted), utilizing high time-resolution field observations of particle chemical components and air quality model simulations. We observed two severe PM pollution episodes primarily triggered by firework emissions and exacerbated by static meteorology (contributing approximately 30%) during 2023 SF, contrasting with its absence in 2022.

Background And Aims: Latitudinal diversity gradients have been intimately linked to the tropical niche conservatism hypothesis, which posits that there has been a strong filter due to the challenges faced by ancestral tropical lineages to adapt to low temperatures and colonize extra-tropical regions. In liverworts, species richness is higher towards the tropics, but the centres of diversity of the basal lineages are distributed across extra-tropical regions, pointing to the colonization of tropical regions by phylogenetically clustered assemblages of species of temperate origin. Here, we test this hypothesis through analyses of the relationship between macroclimatic variation and phylogenetic diversity in Chinese liverworts.

State Key Laboratory of High-performance Ceramics and Superfine Microstructure, Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai 200050, China.

State-of-the-art technology for cyclohexanone oxime production typically demands elevated temperature and pressure, along with the utilization of expensive hydroxylamine sulfate or oxidants. Here, we propose an electrochemistry-assisted cascade strategy for the efficient cyclohexanone ammoximation under ambient conditions by using in situ cathode-generated green oxidants of reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as OOH* and HO. This electrochemical reaction can take place at the cathode, achieving over 95% yield, 99% selectivity of cyclohexanone oxime, and an electron-to-oxime (ETO) efficiency of 96%.

Sci Total Environ

July 2024

State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research, Institute of Eco-Chongming, Center for Blue Carbon Science and Technology, East China Normal University, 200241 Shanghai, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how tidal flooding and salinity stress affect carbon allocation in plants and microbes in coastal marshes, comparing native (Phragmites australis) and invasive (Spartina alterniflora) species.
  • Findings reveal that both flooding and higher salinity reduce carbon allocation to roots and rhizodeposition, with significant impacts on soil carbon and microbial communities, particularly favoring bacteria over fungi.
  • Results indicate that S. alterniflora may be better adapted to these stresses, facilitating its invasive success, while P. australis shows greater susceptibility, highlighting species-specific responses to environmental changes.
