The reproducibility of results obtained with rodent models depends on the genetic purity of the strain and the stability of the environment. However, another potential factor is changes in the gut microbiota due to the transmission of mother's bacteria during embryo transfer. Profiles of alternative mRNA isoforms have been determined in three brain regions of rats from an aggressive and a tame line selected for 74 generations. Among 2319 genes with alternatively spliced exons, approximately 84% were confirmed by analyzing public databases. Based on Gene Ontology-guided clustering of alternatively spliced genes, it has been found that the sample was enriched in synapse-specific genes (FDR < 10^(-17)).

The aim of the present study was to examine how administration of a compound of 1,3,4- thiadiazine class 2-morpholino-5-phenyl-6H-1,3,4-thiadiazine, hydrobromide (L-17) with hypothermia inducing properties affects the brain metabolism. The mechanism by which L-17 induces hypothermia is unknown; it may involve hypothalamic central thermoregulation as well as act via inhibition of energy metabolism. We tested the hypothesis that L-17 may induce hypothermia by directly inhibiting energy metabolism.

The understanding of biological and molecular mechanisms providing survival of cells under extreme temperatures and pressures will help to answer fundamental questions related to the origin of life and to design of biotechnologically important enzymes with new properties. Here, we analyze amino acid sequences of the Nip7 proteins from 35 archaeal species to identify positions containing mutations specific to the hydrostatic pressure and temperature of organism's habitat. The number of such positions related to pressure change is much lower than related to temperature change.
