A new generation of an FFP2 (Filtering Face Piece of type 2) smart face mask is achieved by integrating broadband hybrid nanomaterials and a self-assembled optical metasurface. The multifunctional FFP2 face mask shows simultaneously white light-assisted on-demand disinfection properties and versatile biosensing capabilities. These properties are achieved by a powerful combination of white light thermoplasmonic responsive hybrid nanomaterials, which provide excellent photo-thermal disinfection properties, and optical metasurface-based colorimetric biosensors, with a very low limit of pathogens detection.

Scientific and industrial reasons dictate the study of the solid state of imepitoin, a highly safe and tolerable anticonvulsant drug used in the therapy of epileptic dogs that was approved in the Europe Union in 2013. Our investigations allowed us to discover the existence of a new polymorph of imepitoin, which finds itself in a monotropic relationship with the crystalline form (polymorph I) already known and present on the market. This form (polymorph II), obtained by crystallization from xylene, remains metastable under ambient conditions for at least 1 year.

Fungal infections are a significant global health problem, particularly affecting individuals with weakened immune systems. Moreover, as uncontrolled antibiotic and immunosuppressant use increases continuously, fungal infections have seen a dramatic increase, with some strains developing antibiotic resistance. The aim of this work is the development and production by Direct Powder Extrusion (DPE) 3D printing technique of novel oral mucoadhesive films delivering Clobetasol propionate (CBS), useful in paediatric treatment of Oral Lichen Planus (OLP), a rare chronic disease. The DPE 3D printing of these dosage forms can allow the reduction of frequency regimen, the therapy personalization, and reduction of oral cavity administration discomfort. To obtain suitable mucoadhesive films, different polymeric materials, namely hydroxypropylmethylcellulose or polyethylene oxide blended with chitosan (CS), were tested and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin was added to increase the CBS solubility.

The purpose of this study was to combine direct powder extrusion (DPE) 3D printing and fluid bed coating techniques to create a budesonide (BD) loaded solid oral formulations for the treatment of eosinophilic colitis (EC) in paediatric patients. The preferred medication for EC treatment is BD, which has drawbacks due to its poor water solubility and low absorption. Additionally, since commercially available medications for EC treatment are created and approved for adult patients, administering them to children sometimes requires an off-label use and an impromptu handling, which can result in therapeutic ineffectiveness.

Complex neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, are one of the major therapeutic areas to which multitarget drug discovery strategies have been applied in the last twenty years. Due to the complex multifactorial etiopathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease, it has been proposed that to be successful the pharmaceutical agents should act on multiple targets in order to restore the complex disease network and to provide disease modifying effects. Peptides and nucleic acids can self-assemble to give supramolecular structures that find application in different fields, ranging from the delivery of drugs to the obtainment of materials endowed with optical properties. Forces that stabilize the "suprastructures" typically are hydrogen bonds or aromatic interactions; in case of nucleic acids, Watson-Crick pairing drives self-assembly while, in case of peptides, backbone hydrogen bonds and interactions between aromatic side chains trigger the formation of structures, such as nanotubes or ribbons. Molecules containing both aromatic peptides and nucleic acids could in principle exploit different forces to self-assemble.

Despite the increasing incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide, current pharmacological treatments are still unsatisfactory. We have previously shown that lysophosphatidic acid receptor 6 (LPAR6) supports HCC growth and that 9-xanthenylacetic acid (XAA) acts as an LPAR6 antagonist inhibiting HCC growth without toxicity. Here, we synthesized four novel XAA derivatives, (±)-2-(9H-xanthen-9-yl)propanoic acid (compound 4 - MC9), (±)-2-(9H-xanthen-9-yl)butanoic acid (compound 5 - MC6), (±)-2-(9H-xanthen-9-yl)hexanoic acid (compound 7 - MC11), and (±)-2-(9H-xanthen-9-yl)octanoic acid (compound 8 - MC12, sodium salt) by introducing alkyl groups of increasing length at the acetic α-carbon atom.
