Spectroscopy of transient anions and radicals by gated and accelerated time-of-flight experiment is a new spectrometer developed in UCLouvain. This instrument measures high-resolution photodissociation spectra of mass-selected ions by the combination of a time-of-flight spectrometer including a specific gating, bunching, and re-referencing unit with a nanosecond pulsed dye laser, a pulsed deflection, and an energy selector. The ionic species are generated in a supersonic jet expansion by means of an electric discharge or by the impact of electrons coming from an electron gun.

Lithium-ion batteries are today among the most efficient devices for electrochemical energy storage. However, an improvement of their performance is required to address the challenges of modern grid management, portable technology, and electric mobility. One of the most important limitations to solve is the slow kinetics of redox reactions associated to inorganic cathodic materials, directly impacting on the charging time and the power characteristics of the cells.

We present a growth process relying on pulsed laser deposition for the elaboration of complex van der Waals heterostructures on large scales, at a 400 °C CMOS-compatible temperature. Illustratively, we define a multilayer quantum well geometry through successive growths, leading to WSe being encapsulated into WS layers. The structural constitution of the quantum well geometry is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy combined with transmission electron microscopy.

ortho-Substituted and unsymmetrical 9-phospha-triptycenes were synthesized via two synthetic approaches involving densely functionalized ortho-halogenated triarylmethane or phosphine precursors. ortho-Substituents imposed a considerable steric shielding due to the tricyclic cage-shaped structure with the aryl rings p-systems orthogonal to the phosphorus electron pair. A series of Au(i) and Rh(i) complexes were analysed in the solid state to determine Tolman electronic parameters, cone angles and buried volumes of these unprecedented functionalized phosphines.

Paper substrates are promising for development of cost-effective and efficient point-of-care biosensors, essential for public healthcare and environmental diagnostics in emergency situations. Most paper-based biosensors rely on the natural capillarity of paper to perform qualitative or semi-quantitative colorimetric detections. To achieve quantification and better sensitivity, technologies combining paper-based substrates and electrical detection are being developed.

In the present study, the synthesis of titanium nitride (TiN) by carbothermal reduction nitridation (CRN) reaction using nanocomposites made of mesoporous TiO/acrylonitrile with different content of inorganic phase were explored. The choice of hybrid nanocomposite as precursor for the synthesis of TiN was made due to the possibility of having an intimate interface between the organic and inorganic phases in the mixture that can favours CRN reaction. Subsequently, the hybrid composites have been subjected to four-step thermal treatments at 290 °C, 550 °C, 1000 °C and 1400 °C under nitrogen atmosphere.

We have measured the merged-beams rate coefficient for the titular isotope exchange reactions as a function of the relative collision energy in the range of ∼3 meV-10 eV. The results appear to scale with the number of available sites for deuteration. We have performed extensive theoretical calculations to characterize the zero-point energy corrected reaction path.

A broad-spectrum reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging hybrid material (CASCADE) was developed by sequential adsorption of heparin (HEP) and poly(L-lysine) (PLL) polyelectrolytes together with superoxide dismutase (SOD) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) antioxidant enzymes on layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoclay support. The synthetic conditions were optimized so that CASCADE possessed remarkable structural (no enzyme leakage) and colloidal (excellent resistance against salt-induced aggregation) stability. The obtained composite was active in decomposition of both superoxide radical anions and hydrogen peroxide in biochemical assays revealing that the strong electrostatic interaction with the functionalized support led to high enzyme loadings, nevertheless, it did not interfere with the native enzyme conformation.

Twisted bilayer graphene is created by slightly rotating the two crystal networks in bilayer graphene with respect to each other. For small twist angles, the material undergoes a self-organized lattice reconstruction, leading to the formation of a periodically repeated domain. The resulting superlattice modulates the vibrational and electronic structures within the material, leading to changes in the behaviour of electron-phonon coupling and to the observation of strong correlations and superconductivity.

Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS)-crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution was prepared and treated with benzaldehyde 2 sulphonic sodium salt acid (B2SA) for sulfonation. Different contents of graphene were incorporated into B2SA-grafted PVA-TEOS hybrid membrane to improve the membrane stability, mechanical strength, and overall pervaporation performance of the membranes. Membranes were fabricated using the casting technique.

The combination of inorganic heterogeneous catalysts and enzymes, in so-called hybrid chemoenzymatic heterogeneous catalysts (HCEHCs), is an attractive strategy to effectively run chemoenzymatic reactions. Yet, the preparation of such bifunctional materials remains challenging because both the inorganic and the biological moieties must be integrated in the same solid, while preserving their intrinsic activity. Combining an enzyme and a zeolite, for example, is complicated because the pores of the zeolite are too small to accommodate the enzyme and a covalent anchorage on the surface is often ineffective.

Immobilization of single antioxidant enzyme systems was frequently studied in the past, however, there is a lack of reliable reports on the co-immobilization of such enzymes. Here, an antioxidant enzyme cascade involving superoxide dismutase (SOD) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was successfully immobilized on titania nanosheets (TNS) by the sequential adsorption method using poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) and poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) polyelectrolyte building blocks. The development of the cascade system was based on a colloid approach, in which the charging and aggregation processes were optimized in each synthetic step.

The use of renewable electricity to prepare materials and fuels from abundant molecules offers a tantalizing opportunity to address concerns over energy and materials sustainability. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is integral to nearly all material and fuel electrosyntheses. However, very little is known about the structural evolution of the OER electrocatalyst, especially the amorphous layer that forms from the crystalline structure.

The Zintl phases, Yb Sb ( = Mn, Mg, Al, Zn), are now some of the highest thermoelectric efficiency p-type materials with stability above 873 K. YbMnSb gained prominence as the first p-type thermoelectric material to double the efficiency of SiGe alloy, the heritage material in radioisotope thermoelectric generators used to power NASA's deep space exploration. This study investigates the solid solution of YbMg Al Sb (0 ≤ ≤ 1), which enables a full mapping of the metal-to-semiconductor transition.

Electrochemical deposition of interconnected nanowires and nanotubes made of ferromagnetic metals into track-etched polycarbonate templates with crossed nanochannels has been revealed suitable for the fabrication of mechanically stable three-dimensional magnetic nanostructures with large surface area. These 3D networks embedded into flexible polymer membranes are also planar and lightweight. This fabrication technique allows for the control of the geometric characteristics and material composition of interconnected magnetic nanowire or nanotube networks, which can be used to fine-tune their magnetic and magneto-transport properties.

We report on the use of atomic force microscopy (AFM) to identify and characterize an intermediate state in macrocycle shuttling in a hydrogen bonded amide-based molecular shuttle. The [2]rotaxane consists of a benzylic amide macrocycle mechanically locked onto a thread that bears both fumaramide and succinic amide-ester sites, each of which can bind to the macrocycle through up to four intercomponent hydrogen bonds. Using AFM-based single-molecule force spectroscopy, we mechanically triggered the translocation of the ring between the two principal binding sites ("stations") on the axle.

The applicability of organic battery materials in conventional rocking-chair lithium (Li)-ion cells remains deeply challenged by the lack of Li-containing and air-stable organic positive electrode chemistries. Decades of experimental and theoretical research in the field has resulted in only a few recent examples of Li-reservoir materials, all of which rely on the archetypal conjugated carbonyl redox chemistry. Here we extend the chemical space of organic Li-ion positive electrode materials with a class of conjugated sulfonamides (CSAs) and show that the electron delocalization on the sulfonyl groups endows the resulting CSAs with intrinsic oxidation and hydrolysis resistance when handled in ambient air, and yet display reversible electrochemistry for charge storage.

We report the facile and low-cost preparation as well as detailed characterization of dense arrays of passivated ferromagnetic nickel (Ni) nanotubes (NTs) vertically-supported onto solid Au-coated Si substrates. The proposed fabrication method relies on electrochemical synthesis within the nanopores of a supported anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template and allows for fine tuning of the NTs ferromagnetic walls just by changing the cathodic reduction potential during the nanostructures' electrochemical growth. Subsequently, the experimental platform allowed further passivation of the Ni NTs with the formation of ultra-thin antiferromagnetic layers of nickel oxide (NiO).

Gas adsorption by porous frameworks sometimes results in structure "breathing", "pores opening/closing", "negative gas adsorption", and other phenomena. Time-dependent diffraction can address both kinetics of the guest uptake and structural response of the host framework. Using sub-second in situ powder X-ray diffraction, three intracrystalline diffusion scenarios have been evaluated from the isothermal kinetics of Ar, Kr, and Xe adsorption by nanoporous γ-Mg(BH ) .

Imparting hydrophobicity to solid acid catalysts is critical to regulating their performances by allowing the creation of a less polar environment and improved partitioning of the reactants. Here we present different approaches for the preparation of silica-based catalysts comprising sulfonic acid (-SOH) sites and hydrophobic decyl (-C) chains by either simultaneous or sequential postfunctionalization of an azide-functionalized mesoporous silica platform. This set of hybrid bifunctional catalysts is compared in the model esterification of octanol with acetic acid, and the influence of the preparation methods together with the resulting site spatial distribution is discussed.
