Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery; Saarland University Medical Center, Homburg, Germany; Head and Neck Service, Department of Surgery, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) are among the six most common cancers, with a constantly poor prognosis. Vitamin D has been found to have antineoplastic and immunomodulatory properties in various cancers. This study investigated the impact of Vitamin D on the initiation and progression as well as antitumor immune response in HNSCCs, both in vitro and in vivo.

Statins represent the most prescribed class of drugs for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. Effects that go beyond lipid-lowering actions have been suggested to contribute to their beneficial pharmacological properties. Whether and how statins act on macrophages has been a matter of debate.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are highly prevalent, aggravate each other, and account for substantial mortality. Both conditions are characterized by activation of the innate immune system. The alarmin interleukin-1α (IL-1α) is expressed in a variety of cell types promoting (sterile) systemic inflammation.

Bacterial keratitis: Photodynamic inactivation reduced experimental inflammation.

Exp Ther Med

November 2017

Institute of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Medical Faculty, Saarland University, D-66424 Homburg/Saar, Germany.

The successful treatment of bacterial keratitis remains an unsolved clinical problem. The current study aimed to establish a murine keratitis model and to investigate the effect of chlorin e6 (Ce6) and photodynamic inactivation (PDI) on corneal inflammation. The cornea of anesthetized mice was scratched and covered with a bacterial suspension of .

May 2014

Department of Internal Medicine - Haematology/Oncology, St. Lukas Clinic, D-42697 Solingen, Germany; Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Immunotherapy and Gene Therapy, Saarland University Medical Center, Homburg/Saar, Germany. Electronic address:

Curcumin is widely used in traditional Asian kitchen as a cooking ingredient. Despite its low bioavailability, epidemiological data, on low cancer incidence in Asia, suggest beneficial health effects of this compound. Therefore, the question arose whether cooking modifies the anti-cancerogenic effects of curcumin.

The article deals with some data on investigation of the blood acid-base balance main blood indices and metabolic processes in the rats organism under the artificial hibernation and trivial anesthesia at the foreleg amputation. This model of the artificial hibernation was shown as capable to be promising the hard and complicated operative intrusions in the organism.

Purpose: To clarify the mechanisms of systemic endotoxemia in extrahepatic cholestasis and the pathogenesis of aggravation of multiorgan failure after external biliary drainage (EBD)--for elaborating of the curative tactics.

Materials And Methods: The results of experimental studies performed on 208 Wistar rats and 90 dogs were implemented in the surgical clinic in treatment of 150 patients with cholestasis. In experiments--Histological, Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopic, and Biochemical (Malonic Dialdehide--the end product of Peroxide Oxidation of Lipids of cell membrane) methods have been used.

In developing radioiodinated agents for pancreatic and brain tumor imaging by single photon emission tomography (SPET), we prepared p-amino-3-[123I]iodo-l-phenylalanine (IAPA), p-[123I]iodo-l-phenylalanine (IPA), L-8-[123I]iodo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-7-hydroxyisoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid (ITIC) and L-3-[123I]iodo-alpha-methyl-tyrosine (IMT) in radiochemical yields up to 95%, and we investigated their uptake in human pancreatic carcinoma and glioblastoma cells as well as the mechanisms promoting the tumor uptake. The radiopharmaceutical uptake into tumor cells was rapid (t(1/2) < or = 5 min) and temperature- and pH-dependent. The radioactivity concentration in tumor cells varied from 10 to 33% of the total activity (105-310 cpm/1000 cells) following a 30-min incubation at 37 degrees C (pH 7.

Background: Morbid obesity (MO) is a problem internationally, including in the Ukraine. We present the surgical treatment of MO in the Ukraine over the last 15 years, during which intestinal bypasses and various gastric reduction procedures were performed.

Methods: 198 patients with MO underwent: jejunoileal (JI) bypass 64, non-adjustable gastric banding (NGB) 34, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP) 1, horizontal gastroplasty 1, vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG) 2, and abdominal lipectomy 96.

In chronic experiments in dogs the evacuatory and absorptive duodenal functions and the level of duodenogastric reflux (DGR) in sham-operated dogs and dogs with transected Treitz ligament (TL) and resected duodenojejunal junction (DJJ) were studied. The electrophysiologic characteristics of the antrum, duodenum, and DJJ in sham-operated dogs were examined. It was shown that there is a coordination of gastric and duodenal solid carbohydrate food emptying.
