Background: The endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) gene deficiency is known to cause impaired coronary vasodilating capability in animal models. In the general clinical population, the eNOS gene polymorphisms, able to affect eNOS activity, were associated with cardiometabolic risk features and prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD).
Aim: To investigate the association of eNOS Glu298Asp gene polymorphism, cardiometabolic profile, obstructive CAD and inducible myocardial ischemia in patients with suspected stable CAD.

Aims: To date, no studies have investigated the association between lipid species and coronary plaque changes over time, quantitatively assessed by serial imaging. We aimed to prospectively determine the association between lipid species quantified by a plasma lipidomic analysis and coronary plaque changes according to composition assessed by a quantitative serial analysis of coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA).
Methods And Results: Patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD) undergoing baseline coronary CTA were prospectively enrolled by seven EU centres in the SMARTool study and submitted to clinical, molecular, and coronary CTA re-evaluation at follow-up (an inter-scan period of 6.

Cardiogenic shock (CS) portends a dismal prognosis if hypoperfusion triggers uncontrolled inflammatory and metabolic derangements. We sought to investigate metabolomic profiles and temporal changes in IL6, Ang-2, and markers of glycocalyx perturbation from admission to discharge in eighteen patients with heart failure complicated by CS (HF-CS). Biological samples were collected from 18 consecutive HF-CS patients at admission (T0), 48 h after admission (T1), and at discharge (T2).

A key question in the ongoing drug policy debate is whether legalising cannabis leads to an increase in cannabis use. In Europe although no country has yet moved to legalisation, many have decriminalised personal possession. However, some jurisdictions are still discussing increased sanctions or have further strengthened penalties for the possession of illicit substances in order to deter widespread cannabis use.

However, it is unclear whether climatic variations have a fingerprint on asthma dynamics over long time intervals. The aim of this study is to detect a possible correlation of the Summer North Atlantic Oscillation (S-NAO) index and the self-calibrated palmer drought severity index (scPDSI) with asthma incidence over the period from 1957 to 2006 in Italy.

Unlabelled: Personal ornaments are widely viewed as indicators of social identity and personhood. Ornaments are ubiquitous from the Late Pleistocene to the Holocene, but they are most often found as isolated objects within archaeological assemblages without direct evidence on how they were displayed. This article presents a detailed record of the ornaments found in direct association with an Early Mesolithic buried female infant discovered in 2017 at the site of Arma Veirana (Liguria, Italy).

The Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) has been known to regulate cholesterol and β-amyloid (Aβ) production, redistribution, and elimination, in the central nervous system (CNS). The ApoE ε4 polymorphic variant leads to impaired brain cholesterol homeostasis and amyloidogenic pathway, thus representing the major risk factor for Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Currently, less is known about the molecular mechanisms connecting ApoE ε4-related cholesterol metabolism and cholinergic system degeneration, one of the main AD pathological features.

Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography allow the characterization of arterial state and function with high confidence and thus play a key role in the understanding of arterial aging and its translation into the clinic. Decades of research into the development of innovative imaging sequences and image analysis techniques have led to the identification of a large number of potential biomarkers, some bringing improvement in basic science, others in clinical practice. Nonetheless, the complexity of some of these biomarkers and the image analysis techniques required for their computation hamper their widespread use.

Background And Aims: MMP-9 is a predictor of atherosclerotic plaque instability and adverse cardiovascular events, but longitudinal data on the association between MMP9 and coronary disease progression are lacking. This study is aimed at investigating whether MMP9 is associated with atherosclerotic plaque progression and the related molecular basis in stable patients with chronic coronary syndrome (CCS).
Methods: MMP9 serum levels were measured in 157 CCS patients (58 ± 8 years of age; 66% male) undergoing coronary computed tomography angiography at baseline and after a follow up period of 6.

Endothelial and smooth muscle cell dysfunction is an early event at the onset of atherosclerosis, a heterogeneous and multifactorial pathology of the vascular wall. Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-4, a mechanosensitive autocrine cytokine, and BMPR-1a, BMPR-1b, BMPR-2 specific receptors play a key role in atherosclerotic plaque formation and vascular calcification and BMP4 is regarded as a biomarker of endothelial cell activation. The study aimed to examine the BMP4 system expression by Real-Time PCR in Human Coronary Artery Endothelial (HCAECs) and Smooth Muscle Cells (HCASMCs) under different flow rates determining low or physiological shear stress in the presence/absence of medicated Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffold (BVS).

CLN5 disease (MIM: 256731) represents a rare late-infantile form of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL), caused by mutations in the gene that encodes the CLN5 protein (CLN5p), whose physiological roles stay unanswered. No cure is currently available for CLN5 patients and the opportunities for therapies are lagging. The role of lysosomes in the neuro-pathophysiology of CLN5 disease represents an important topic since lysosomal proteins are directly involved in the primary mechanisms of neuronal injury occurring in various NCL forms.

The healing process of the tooth extraction socket often leads to significant resorption of the alveolar bone, eventually causing clinical difficulties for future implant-supported rehabilitations. The aim of the present animal study was to evaluate alveolar bone remodeling after tooth extraction in a rabbit model, either with or without the use of a plain collagen plug inside the socket, by means of micro-computed tomography. The study included the micro-tomography analysis of 36 rabbits' incisor extraction sockets, either left empty or filled with a collagen plug.

This study extends existing research on the relationship between psychoactive substance use among young people and violent behaviour, by evaluating the possible effect of the modification of parenting in a nationally representative sample of 14,685 Italian students drawn from the 2019 wave of the ESPAD Italia survey (51% male; mean age about 17 years). Parental dimensions considered in the study were rule-setting, monitoring, and emotional support, as well as the possible absence of a parent. Relative risk ratios and binary logistic regressions were used to estimate the associations separately for adolescents (15-17) and young adults (18-19).

Overdrinking and non-osmotic arginine vasopressin release are the main risk factors for exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH) in ultra-marathon events. However, particularly during ultra-marathon running in mountainous regions, eccentric exercise and hypoxia, which have been shown to modulate inflammation, hormones regulating fluid homeostasis (hypoxia), and oxidative stress, could contribute to serum sodium changes in a dose-dependent manner. To the best of our knowledge, the contribution of these factors, the extent of which depends on the duration and geographical location of the race, has not been well studied.
