Trace elements, including zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu), are known to play important roles in human health. The present study aimed to assess the levels of Zn and Cu in cord blood and maternal milk and to analyze their association with maternal and infant characteristics and pregnancy outcomes in a Slovenian study population of mothers and their neonates recruited within the PHIME prospective cohort study. The study included 324 mothers, but the data on Zn and Cu levels in both cord blood and maternal milk was available for 243 mothers.

Background: Due to their wide application in the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, we verified and compared three qualitative serological methods in order to select the most optimal that will best serve its purpose under laboratory conditions.
Methods: We assessed the diagnostic characteristics of two automated serological methods (Roche Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 and Abbott SARS-CoV-2 IgG) and a POCT test (Colloidal Gold Method SARS-CoV-2 IgM/IgG Antibody Assay Kit). In the process of verification, analytical precision was also assessed for the automated assays.

Aim: Although the levels of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) have proved to be a useful diagnostic biomarker of acute myocardial infarction, there are a wide variety of point-of-care (POC) analysers, which provide measurements of cTnI. The aim of this study was to compare the results obtained by the ADVIA Centaur ultra-assay cTnI assay (us-cTnI), ADVIA Centaur high-sensitive cTnI assay (hs-cTnI) and a POC high-sensitivity assay using PATHFAST. We also aimed to explore total turnaround time (TAT) for laboratory results using the POC PATHFAST analyser.

OSI is determined by the reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROM test) to assess oxidants and the plasma antioxidant capacity test (PAT test) to measure antioxidants. The aim of the study was to evaluate the predictive value of OSI in the disease COVID-19.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a well-known synthetic compound that belongs to the group of endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Although bone tissue is a target for these compounds, studies on BPA-related effects on bone morphology in farm animals are limited. In this preliminary study, we investigated the effects of short-term dietary BPA exposure on femoral morphology, metabolism, mineral content, and biomechanical behavior in rams aged 9-12 months.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare Quidel's rapid antigen test Sofia SARS antigen Fluorescent Immunoassay (FIA) (Sofia) with the real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) test.
Methods: Two samples were taken from each test subject-1 for testing with the Sofia test and 1 for testing with the rRT-PCR test. In total, swabs were taken from 146 subjects who presented symptoms of infection (group 1) and 672 subjects who were tested regardless of symptoms (group 2).

Background: C-mixed triglyceride breath test (C-MTGT) is a non-invasive test for the detection of moderate and severe pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI), but it requires prolonged breath sampling. The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic power of abbreviated C-MTGT in detecting PEI in patients after subtotal and total gastrectomy performed due to gastric cancer.
Subjects And Methods: This cross-sectional observational study included 3 groups of subjects; healthy controls, patients with subtotal and patients with total gastrectomy.

We have recently shown that minor subclinical creatinine dynamic changes enable the excellent detection of acute kidney injury (AKI) within 6-12 h after cardiac surgery. The aim of the present study was to examine a combination of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), cystatin C (CysC) and creatinine for enhanced AKI detection early after cardiac surgery. Elective patients with normal renal function undergoing cardiac surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass were enrolled.

Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is a standard biomarker for the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). While older, ultra-sensitive cTnI (us-cTnI) assays use the 99th percentile as the reference threshold, newer high-sensitive cTnI (hs-cTnI) assays use the limit of detection or functional sensitivity instead. However, little has been done to systematically compare these two methods.

Internal quality control (IQC) regarding process to monitor analytical stability has a long tradition in laboratory medicine. The satisfactory results with different quality specifications of the IQC ensure the acceptability of the examination results. Although the statistical IQC is satisfactory some problems exist, resulting in unreliable patients' results due several reasons (non-commutable control materials, lot to lot difference of reagents, false interpreting test results regarding autovalidation or autoverification, different analytical and clinical specifications or goals etc.

RT-qPCR is the gold standard and the most commonly used method for measuring gene expression. Selection of appropriate reference gene(s) for normalization is a crucial part of RT-qPCR experimental design, which allows accurate quantification and reliability of the results. Because there is no universal reference gene and even commonly used housekeeping genes' expression can vary under certain conditions, careful selection of an appropriate internal control must be performed for each cell type or tissue and experimental design.

Introduction: Fecal calprotectin is a biomarker for monitoring inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) activity. Our aim, therefore, was to evaluate two new assays, the point of care test Quantum Blue and the Liaison Calprotectin with respect to the Calprest, commonly used assay, and to determine their performance for IBD diagnosis.
Materials And Methods: We included 73 prospective patients with IBD.

Background: Preterm infants born at less than 32 weeks of gestation are at higher risk of low total iron stores (iron deficiency). Serum ferritin is used as a valid total iron stores and iron deficiency biomarker, usually as a combination of ferritin and red blood cell counts.
Methods: Serum hepcidin and ferritin values and red blood cell counts were obtained from 37 of 40 included premature infants born at less than 32 weeks of gestation at risk of iron deficiency.

Background: Early diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) after cardiac surgery is based on serum creatinine which is neither a specific nor a sensitive biomarker. In our study, we investigated the role of serum Klotho in early prediction of AKI after cardiac surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).
Methods: The included patients were classified into three groups according to AKI stages using KDIGO criteria.

Extracorporeal hemadsorption may reduce inflammatory reaction in cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery. Glucocorticoids have been used during open-heart surgery for alleviation of systemic inflammation after CPB. We compared intraoperative hemadsorption and methylprednisolone, with usual care, during complex cardiac surgery on CPB, for inflammatory responses, hemodynamics, and perioperative course.

Introduction: By quantifying the measurement uncertainty (MU), both the laboratory and the physician can have an objective estimate of the results' quality. There is significant flexibility on how to determine the MU in laboratory medicine and different approaches have been proposed by Nordtest, Eurolab and Cofrac to obtain the data and apply them in formulas. The purpose of this study is to compare three different top-down approaches for the estimation of the MU and to suggest which of these approaches could be the most suitable choice for routine use in clinical laboratories.

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of July 11, 2016, the reported average incidence of children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) was 1 in 68 (1.46%) among 8-year-old children born in 2004 and living within the 11 monitoring sites' surveillance areas in the United States of America (USA) in 2012. ASD is a multifaceted neurodevelopmental disorder that is also considered a hidden disability, as, for the most part; there are no apparent morphological differences between children with ASD and typically developing children.
