We identify a blood-based 9-gene signature using a computational pipeline that constructs and interrogates a genome-wide transcriptome-integrated protein-interaction network.

Background: Lung cancer is the primary cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. The human lung serves as a niche to a unique and dynamic bacterial community that is related to the development of multiple diseases. Here, we investigated the differences in the lung microbiomes of patients with lung cancer.

Clinical Features, Diagnosis, Management, and Outcomes of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis in Korea: Analysis of the Korea IPF Cohort (KICO) Registry.

Background: The Korea Interstitial Lung Disease Study Group has made a new nationwide idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) registry because the routine clinical practice has changed due to new guidelines and newly developed antifibrotic agents in the recent decade. The aim of this study was to describe recent clinical characteristics of Korean IPF patients.

Methods: Both newly diagnosed and following IPF patients diagnosed after the previous registry in 2008 were enrolled.

The relationship between cognitive function and competence in inhaler technique in older adults with airway disease.

Cognitive impairment has high prevalence in older adults with airway diseases, and may influence their competence in inhaler use, thereby negatively affecting patient prognosis. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between cognitive function and competence in inhaler technique. We enrolled 108 inhaler naïve older adults (≥60 years) with airway disease in this prospective observational study and performed the Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (K-MMSE).

Soluble IL-2R Levels Predict in-Hospital Mortality in COVID-19 Patients with Respiratory Failure.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome is the primary cause of death in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. Our study aims to determine the association between serum markers and mortality in COVID-19 patients with respiratory failure. This retrospective study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in South Korea.

Risk factors and mortality of acute kidney injury within 1 month after lung transplantation.

After lung transplantation (LT), some patients are at risk of acute kidney injury (AKI), which is associated with worse outcomes and increased mortality. Previous studies focused on AKI development from 72 h to 1 week within LT, and reported main risk factors for AKI such as intraoperative hypotension, need of ECMO support, ischemia time or longer time on waiting list. However, this period interval rarely reflects medical risk factors probably happen in longer post-operative period.

Methods: This Retrospective Descriptive Cross-Sectional Study was conducted at the TB laboratories, Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases, Dow University of Health Sciences. The record of 713 positive cases of Rifampicin Resistant Tuberculosis from January 2013 to December 2017 were analysed.

The impact of left lower paratracheal (4L) lymph node dissection on survival in patients with surgically treated left-sided NSCLC.

Objectives: We aimed to investigate the clinical significance of left lower paratracheal nodes (#4L) and their impact on survival in patients with left-sided lung cancer.

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of prospective data. The study included 5369 patients who underwent surgery between 2005 and 2015.

The incidence of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and mortality related to the disease have steadily increased in recent years. The risk of cancer is approximately eight times higher in IPF patients than in the general population. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the severity of IPF is related to the time interval between IPF diagnosis and lung cancer diagnosis and to the stage of lung cancer at diagnosis.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at OPD of Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases and Medicine, Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi, Pakistan, during the period 8 September 2019 till 30 May 2020. Patients of both genders aged 25-70 years who were satisfying GOLD criteria for COPD and having SpO ≥ 94% were included.

Video-assisted versus open thoracotomy lobectomy: comparison on lymphadenectomy and survival in early stage of lung cancer.

Background: Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) is increasingly used in the surgical treatment of early lung cancer, but the oncological benefits are still controversial. We aimed to compare video-assisted lobectomy and open thoracotomy lobectomy in terms of lymphadenectomy and long-term survival depending on the location of lobectomy.

Methods: A retrospective, multicenter study was based on the Polish Lung Cancer Study Group and included patients with stage I lung cancer who were surgically treated between 2007 and 2015.

Diagnosis of severe sepsis using phospholipids enzymatic assay based on cyclic voltammetry.

In this work phospholipid quantification was carried out using an enzymatic assay based on cyclic voltammetry of the condensation product of N-ethyl-N-(2-hydroxy-3-sulfopropyl)-3,5-dimethoxyaniline sodium salt (DAOS) and 4-aminoantipyrine (4-AP) with a graphite electrode. For the optimization of electrochemical measurement for the product, electrochemical properties such as the electrochemical window, double layer capacitance (Cdl) and electron transfer rate (kapp) were analyzed for a graphite-electrode and Au-electrode. The phospholipid enzymatic assay based the on electrochemical measurement using the graphite electrode was applied to the diagnosis of sepsis for sera from healthy volunteers (n = 16), patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS, n = 16) and severe sepsis patients (n = 24).

A nationwide population-based study of incidence and mortality of lung cancer in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is an independent risk factor for lung cancer (LC) development; however, there are currently no clinical guidelines for LC surveillance in IPF. This study aimed to investigate the cumulative incidence and survival outcomes of LC in IPF. Using the National Health Insurance Service database, including medical information on people aged ≥ 40 years between 2011 and 2016, we identified IPF patients and confirmed the presence of comorbid LC.

The influence of the number of lymph nodes removed on the accuracy of a newly proposed N descriptor classification in patients with surgically-treated lung cancer.

Introduction: The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer has proposed a new classification of N descriptor based on the number of metastatic lymph nodes (LNs) stations, including skip metastasis. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of removed LNs on the adequacy of this new classification.

Materials And Methods: The material was collected retrospectively based on the database of the Polish Lung Cancer Group, including information on 8016 patients with non-small cell lung cancer operated in 23 thoracic surgery centers in Poland.

Genetic and antigenic characterization of wild type rubella viruses isolated from India.

Rubella, is a contagious disease caused by Rubella virus (RuV) that manifests as fever with skin-rashes in children and adults along with complications in pregnant women. WHO-SEAR has set a target for Rubella elimination by 2023. This is the first report of antigenic characterization and genome sequencing of nine RuVs sampled during 1992, 2007-9, and 2015-17 from four Indian states.

In recent decades, diagnosis and treatment recommendations for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) have changed. In Korea, the average life expectancy has increased, unmet healthcare needs have been reduced, and the number of computed tomographic examinations performed has nearly doubled. The Korean Interstitial Lung Disease Study Group conducted a nationwide cohort study for idiopathic interstitial pneumonia, including IPF, and established a registry for IPF.

Alternative methods of lymph node staging in lung cancer: a narrative review.

The nodal status indicator in non-small cell lung cancer is one of the most crucial prognostic factors available. However, there are still many arguments among scientists regarding whether the currently used nodal status descriptor should be changed in the forthcoming editions of the Tumor Node Metastasis classification or whether it is precise enough and should be maintained as is. We reviewed studies concerning nodal factor classifications to evaluate their accuracy in non-small cell lung cancer patients and to address the previously mentioned challenge.

Synthesis, characterization and SEM studies of novel 1-indanyl isoniazid and hydrazide Schiff base derivatives as new anti-tubercular agents.

The aim of study was to synthesize 1-indanyl isoniazid and sixteen other hydrazide Schiff base derivatives from 1-indanone. All synthesized derivatives were screened for the inhibitory activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis on three Mycobacterial strains ATCC H37Rv, known INH-sensitive (INH-S) and INH-resistant strains (INH-R) by proportion method. The derivatives were characterized using different spectroscopic techniques such as UV-Visible, FTIR, H NMR, and HREIMS.

Human herpesvirus 8-negative effusion-based lymphoma with indolent clinical behavior in an elderly patient: A case report and literature review.

Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that is usually characterized by lymphomatous effusions in the body cavity without any detectable tumor masses. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) schema for tumor classification, PEL is defined by the presence of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8) in malignant lymphoid cells. However, a subset of effusion-based B-cell lymphoma is not HHV8-positive and exhibits different clinicopathological characteristics.

Inhibition of Pendrin by a small molecule reduces Lipopolysaccharide-induced acute Lung Injury.

Pendrin is encoded by and its mutation leads to congenital hearing loss. Additionally, pendrin is up-regulated in inflammatory airway diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, allergic rhinitis, and asthma. In this study, the effects of a novel pendrin inhibitor, YS-01, were investigated in an LPS-induced acute lung injury (ALI) mice model, and the mechanism underlying the effect of YS-01 was examined.
