Selected organometallic compounds are nowadays extensively used as highly efficient catalysts in organic synthesis. A great variety of different ligand systems exists, of which phosphine-based ligands are a significant subgroup. While mass spectrometry, predominantly electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), is a standard analytical technique for the identification of new ligands and their metal complexes, there is little information on the behavior of phosphine-based ligands/molecules by electrospray ionization collision-induced dissociation tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-CID-MS/MS) at low collision energies (<100 eV) in the literature.

Electroporation is a useful tool for the manipulation with the cell membrane permeability. Underlying physicochemical processes taking place at the molecular level during electroporation are relatively well studied. However, various processes remain unknown, one of them is lipid oxidation, a chain reaction that causes degradation of lipids, and might explain the long-lasting membrane permeability after the electric field has ceased.

The oxygen exchange kinetics and the surface chemistry of epitaxially grown, dense LaSrCoO (LSC) thin films in three different orientations, (001), (110), and (111), were investigated by means of impedance spectroscopy during pulsed laser deposition (i-PLD) and near-ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS). i-PLD measurements showed that pristine LSC surfaces exhibit very fast surface exchange kinetics but revealed no significant differences between the specific orientations. However, as soon as the surfaces were in contact with acidic, gaseous impurities, such as S-containing compounds in nominally pure measurement atmospheres, NAP-XPS measurements revealed that the (001) orientation is substantially more susceptible to the formation of sulfate adsorbates and a concomitant performance decrease.

Gas-phase electrophoresis on a nano-Electrospray Gas-phase Electrophoretic Mobility Molecular Analyzer (nES GEMMA) separates single-charged, native analytes according to the surface-dry particle size. A volatile electrolyte, often ammonium acetate, is a prerequisite for electrospraying. Over the years, nES GEMMA has demonstrated its unique capability to investigate (bio-)nanoparticle containing samples in respect to composition, analyte size, size distribution, and particle numbers.

The present study demonstrates the importance of converting signal intensity maps of organic tissues collected by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to elemental concentration maps and also proposes a methodology based on machine learning for its execution. The proposed methodology employs matrix-matched external calibration supported by a pixel-by-pixel automatic matrix (tissue type) recognition performed by linear discriminant analysis of the spatially resolved LIBS hyperspectral data set. On a swine (porcine) brain sample, we successfully performed this matrix recognition with an accuracy of 98% for the grey and white matter and we converted a LIBS intensity map of a tissue sample to a correct concentration map for the elements Na, K and Mg.

In this work, different sol-gel sorbent-coated second-generation fabric phase sorptive extraction (FPSE) membranes were synthesized using titania-based sol-gel precursors. The proposed membranes were tested for their efficiency to extract eleven selected organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) from apple juice samples. Among the examined materials, sol-gel C coated titania-based FPSE membranes showed the highest extraction efficiency.

This study compares the performance and output of an electrochemical phospholipid membrane platform against respective in vitro cell-based toxicity testing methods using three toxicants of different biological action (chlorpromazine (CPZ), colchicine (COL) and methyl methanesulphonate (MMS)). Human cell lines from seven different tissues (lung, liver, kidney, placenta, intestine, immune system) were used to validate this physicochemical testing system. For the cell-based systems, the effective concentration at 50 % cell death (EC) values are calculated.

A new type of catalyst preparation yields its active sites not by infiltration but exsolution of reducible transition metals of its own host lattice. These exsolution catalysts offer a high dispersion of catalytically active particles, slow agglomeration, and the possibility of reactivation after poisoning due to redox cycling. The formation of exsolved particles by partial decomposition of the host lattice can be driven by applying a sufficiently reducing atmosphere, elevated temperatures but also by a cathodic bias voltage (provided the host perovskite is an electrode on an oxide ion conducting electrolyte).

The oxygen exchange kinetics of epitaxial PrCeO electrodes was modified by decoration with submonolayer amounts of different basic (SrO, CaO) and acidic (SnO, TiO) binary oxides. The oxygen exchange reaction (OER) rate and the total conductivity were measured by PLD impedance spectroscopy (-PLD), which allows to directly track changes of electrochemical properties after each deposited pulse of surface decoration. The surface chemistry of the electrodes was investigated by near-ambient pressure XPS measurements (NAP-XPS) at elevated temperatures and by low-energy ion scattering (LEIS).

Sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors are used in the treatment of diabetes but are also emerging as cardioprotective agents in heart diseases even in the absence of type 2 diabetes. In this paper, upon providing a short overview of common pathophysiological features of diabetes, we review the clinically reported cardio- and nephroprotective potential of sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors currently available on the market, including Dapagliflozin, Canagliflozin, and Empagliflozin. To that end, we summarize findings of clinical trials that have initially drawn attention to the drugs' organ-protective potential, before providing an overview of their proposed mechanism of action.

The effects of sulphur adsorbates and other typical solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) poisons on the electronic and ionic properties of an SrO-terminated (La,Sr)CoO (LSC) surface and on its oxygen exchange kinetics have been investigated experimentally with near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS), low energy ion scattering (LEIS) and impedance spectroscopy as well as computationally with density functional theory (DFT). The experiment shows that trace amounts of sulphur in measurement atmospheres form SO adsorbates and strongly deactivate a pristine LSC surface. They induce a work function increase, indicating a changing surface potential and a surface dipole.
