September 2019

Regional Centre of Advanced Technologies and Materials Department of Physical Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Palacky University in Olomouc, Šlechtitelů 27, 779 00, Olomouc, Czech Republic.

The synthesis and characterization of two thiophenol-modified fluorographene derivatives, namely methoxythiophenol-and dimethylaminothiophenol-modified fluorographenes, are reported, while their third-order nonlinear optical response were thoroughly investigated under both visible (532 nm) and infrared (1064 nm) with 35 ps and 4 ns laser pulses. The graphene derivatives were obtained by partial nucleophilic substitution/reduction of fluorographene by the corresponding organic thiophenols, and were fully characterized by techniques including infrared/Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission microscopy. This type of modification resulted in graphenic structures where the attached thiol groups, sp domains, and the residual fluorine groups act as donors, π bridges, and acceptors, respectively.

Three-Dimensional Digital Reconstruction of TiAlC Ceramic Foams Produced by the Gelcast Method.

Materials (Basel)

December 2019

Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences (ICE-HT), Foundation for Research and Technology, Hellas (FORTH), Stadiou, Platani, GR-26504 Patras, Greece.

Α digital reconstruction technique is presented that generates three-dimensional (3D) digital representations of ceramic foams created by the foam-gelcasting technique. The reconstruction process uses information that is directly extracted from Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images and offers a 3D representation of the physical sample accounting for the typically large pore cavities and interconnecting windows that are formed during the preparation process. Contrary to typical tessellation-based foam treatments, a spherical representation of the pores and the pore windows of the foams is assumed and a novel hybrid algorithm that combines a variation of Lubachevsky-type and Random Close Packing of Hard Spheres (RCPHS) algorithms has been developed to obtain near-optimum solutions to the packing problem of the spheres that represent the pores.

The goal of this work is to model the nature of the chemical species [CdCl(extractant)] that are formed during the solvent (or liquid-liquid) extraction of the toxic cadmium(II) from chloride-containing aqueous media using hydrophobic 2-pyridyl ketoximes as extractants. Our coordination chemistry approach involves the study of the reactions between cadmium(II) chloride dihydrate and phenyl 2-pyridyl ketoxime (phpaoH) in water-containing acetone. The reactions have provided access to complexes [CdCl(phpaoH)]∙HO (∙HO) and {[CdCl(phpaoH)]} (); the solid-state structures of which have been determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography.

The spin-crossover (SCO) polymorph B (complex 1) of the known compound [Fe{N(CN)}(abpt)], where abpt is 4-amino-3,5-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole, has been prepared in three different particle sizes averaging ∼300 (sample 1a), ∼80 (sample 1b), and ∼20 nm (sample 1c). Two independent octahedral molecules possessing Fe1 and Fe2 were found to be present in the crystal of B. Magnetostructural relationships had established that at room temperature both Fe sites are in the high-spin state (HS-HS), whereas a decrease in the temperature to 90 K induces the complete high-spin to low-spin conversion of the Fe1 site, with Fe2 remaining in the high-spin state (LS-HS).
