Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a common and aggressive cancer, and its standard treatment is concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). Maintenance chemotherapy is often used to help prevent cancer recurrence, but its efficacy for patients with ESCC receiving CCRT remains unclear. We conducted a large head-to-head propensity score matching cohort study to estimate the effects of maintenance chemotherapy on overall survival and cancer-specific survival in patients with ESCC receiving standard CCRT.

Graduate Institute of Business Administration, Fu Jen Catholic University, New Taipei City, Taiwan; Artificial Intelligence Development Center, Fu Jen Catholic University, New Taipei City, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Aims: This study investigated the association between the frequency of screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR) versus the development of DR and corresponding medical expenses among patients newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Methods: This longitudinal, population-based study used the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (2004 to 2020) as a data source. Propensity score matching (PSM) (sex, age, comorbidities and concurrent medication use) was employed in the grouping of T2DM patients according to different frequency of DR screening.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to improve the prediction of all-cause mortality in Type 2 Diabetes patients with long-term Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease risk factors, highlighting the limited effectiveness of the Coronary Artery Calcium score for this purpose.
  • A cohort of 1929 asymptomatic patients aged 40-80 was analyzed using various clinical and demographic data to create a predictive scoring system based on significant risk factors identified through a multivariate analysis.
  • The findings reveal a clear stratification of risk levels, with notable differences in 5-year survival rates, confirming that the newly developed Poh-Ai Predictive Scoring System effectively predicts mortality and cardiovascular incidents in this patient population.

Longitudinal data, while often limited, contain valuable insights into features impacting clinical outcomes. To predict the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in patients with metabolic syndrome, particularly those transitioning from stage 3a to 3b, where data are scarce, utilizing feature ensemble techniques can be advantageous. It can effectively identify crucial risk factors, influencing CKD progression, thereby enhancing model performance.

Diagnostic markers for myasthenia gravis (MG) are limited; thus, innovative approaches are required for supportive diagnosis and personalized care. Gut microbes are associated with MG pathogenesis; however, few studies have adopted machine learning (ML) to identify the associations among MG, gut microbiota, and metabolites. In this study, we developed an explainable ML model to predict biomarkers for MG diagnosis.
