The ocellated skink () is a widespread lizard, naturally distributed between the Maghreb and coastal Pakistan, with few insular populations in the Mediterranean coastal area. Some populations of this species have also been recorded in peninsular Italy, Campania and Southern Tuscany due to accidental introductions via touristic and commercial routes. In this work, we conducted genetic analyses on mitochondrial DNA COXI, cytb and 16S mtDNA genes on a sample of Italian insular and peninsular populations.

Riboflavin (Rf), or vitamin B2, is the precursor of FMN and FAD, redox cofactors of several dehydrogenases involved in energy metabolism, redox balance and other cell regulatory processes. FAD synthase, coded by FLAD1 gene in humans, is the last enzyme in the pathway converting Rf into FAD. Mutations in FLAD1 gene are responsible for neuromuscular disorders, in some cases treatable with Rf.

Reducing climate-related impacts on oak woodland habitats and ecosystems through adaptation management requires knowledge of different site interactions in relation to species tolerance. In Britain, the required thematic detail of woodland type is unavailable from digital maps.

In this paper, the efficiency of the carbonic anhydrase (CA) enzyme in accelerating the hydration of CO is evaluated using a measurement system which consists of a vessel in which a gaseous flow of mixtures of nitrogen and CO is bubbled into water or water solutions containing a known quantity of CA enzyme. The pH value of the solution and the CO concentration at the measurement system gas exhaust are continuously monitored. The measured CO level allows for assessing the quantity of CO, which, subtracted from the gaseous phase, is dissolved into the liquid phase and/or hydrated to bicarbonate.

In the past decades, the grasses of the genus have emerged as a versatile model allowing evolutionary, genetic, molecular, and developmental studies on apomixis as well as successful breeding applications. The rise of such an archetypal system progressed through integrative phases, which were essential to draw conclusions based on solid standards. Here, we review the steps adopted in to establish the current body of knowledge on apomixis and provide model breeding programs for other agronomically important apomictic crops.

Plant populations can undergo very localized adaptation, allowing widely distributed populations to adapt to divergent habitats in spite of recurrent gene flow. Neotropical trees-whose large and undisturbed populations often span a variety of environmental conditions and local habitats-are particularly good models to study this process. Here, we explore patterns of adaptive divergence from large (i.

The marble crab Pachygrapsus marmoratus inhabits the rocky shores of the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and East Atlantic Ocean. As other intertidal species, it is considered a model species to study the effects of environmental stressors on natural populations. In this study, we performed Illumina next-generation sequencing on eleven P.

Among several mechanisms underlying the well-known trophic and protective effects of 17β-estradiol (E2) in the brain, we recently reported that E2 induces the up-regulation of two anti-apoptotic and neuroprotectant proteins: huntingtin (HTT) and neuroglobin (NGB). Here, we investigate the role of this up-regulation. The obtained results indicate that E2 promotes NGB-HTT association, induces the localization of the complex at the mitochondria, and protects SK-N-BE neuroblastoma cells and murine striatal cells, which express wild-type HTT (i.
