Purpose: Dimethyl fumarate (DMF), the first-line oral therapy for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, is rapidly metabolized into monomethyl fumarate. The DMF oral administration provokes gastrointestinal discomfort causing treatment withdrawal. The present study aimed to develop an innovative formulation for DMF nasal administration.

Despite its potential against several carcinomas, the pharmacological efficacy of silibinin (SLB) is hampered by poor solubility, absorption, and oral bioavailability. To face these issues, we developed polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs) coated with hydrophilic polyethene oxide (PEO) for controlled and targeted SLB delivery. NPs were produced at two different SLB loadings and presented a spherical shape with smooth surfaces and stable size in water and cell culture medium.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are considered an attractive generation of novel antibiotics due to their advantageous properties such as a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against pathogens, low cytotoxicity, and drug resistance. Although they have common structural features and it has been widely demonstrated that bacterial membranes represent the main target of the peptide activity, the exact mechanism underlying the membrane perturbation by AMPs is not fully understood. Nevertheless, all the proposed modes of action implicate the preliminary interaction of AMPs with the negatively charged lipids in bacterial membranes.

Gamma rays impact on 2D-MoS in water solution.

Sci Rep

Department of Advanced Biomedical Sciences, University of Naples, Federico II, Naples, Italy.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides, particularly MoS, are interesting materials for many applications in aerospace research, radiation therapy and bioscience more in general. Since in many of these applications MoS-based nanomaterials can be placed in an aqueous environment while exposed to ionizing radiation, both experimental and theoretical studies of their behaviour under these conditions is particularly interesting. Here, we study the effects of tiny imparted doses of 511 keV photons to MoS nanoflakes in water solution.

Oxidative stress, hyperactivation of compensatory mechanisms (unfolded protein response, UPR; nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2, Nrf2) and the stimulation of maladaptive response (inflammation/apoptosis) are interconnected pathogenic processes occurring during Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression. The neuroprotective ability of dietary Conjugated linoleic acid (CLAmix) in a mouse model of AlCl-induced AD was recently described but, the effects of AlCl or CLAmix intake on these pathogenic processes are still unknown. The effects of dietary AlCl or CLAmix - alone and in combination - were examined in the brain cortex of twenty-eight BalbC mice divided into 4 groups (n = 7 each).

Mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, inflammation and glucose dysmetabolism are pathological signs of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Dietary aluminum (Al) overload is often used to induce AD in rodents and trigger the onset of oxidative-stress hallmarks resembling those of the human disease. The Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), owing to its key role in redox homeostasis, mitochondrial function and inflammation, is a promising drug target for neurological disorders, but only a few data are available on its modulatory effects on glucose transporter expression levels.

Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor2 (Nrf2) is a redox-sensitive transcription factor. Its activation by low dietary intake of ligands leads to antioxidant effects (eustress), while pro-oxidant effects (oxidative distress) may be associated with high doses. NADPH oxidases (NOXs) and the mitochondrial electron transport chain are the main sources of intracellular ROS, but their involvement in the biphasic/hormetic activity elicited by Nrf2 ligands is not fully understood.

Inflammation and oxidative stress play an important role in the pathogenesis of depressive disorders and nuclear erythroid related factor 2 (Nrf2), a regulator of RedOx homeostasis and inflammation, is a promising target for depression prevention/treatment. As fish oil (FO) and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) are known Nrf2 inducers, their protective ability is comparatively evaluated in a murine model of depression (MRL/MpJ-Fas ). Oxidative stress, fatty acids content, and critical factors reflecting brain functioning-namely brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), synaptic markers, and cholinergic signaling-are preliminarily evaluated in the frontal cortex of 8-week (Young) and in 22-week old animals (Old), which are used as model of depression.

Description of olive morphological parameters by using open access software.

Plant Methods

December 2017

Department of Horticultural Genetics and Biotechnology, Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (MAICh), Alsyllio Agrokipiou, PO BOX 85, 73100 Chania-Crete, Greece.

Background: The morphological analysis of olive leaves, fruits and endocarps may represent an efficient tool for the characterization and discrimination of cultivars and the establishment of relationships among them. In recent years, much attention has been focused on the application of molecular markers, due to their high diagnostic efficiency and independence from environmental and phenological variables.

Results: In this study, we present a semi-automatic methodology of detecting various morphological parameters.

Oxidative stress is a key mediator of autoimmune/neurodegenerative disorders. The antioxidant/anti-inflammatory effect of a synthetic conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) mixture in MRL/MpJ-Fas mice (MRL/), an animal model of neuropsychiatric lupus, was previously associated with the improvement of nuclear factor-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) defenses in the spleen and liver. However, little is known about the neuroprotective ability of a CLA mixture.

Dietary supplementation with pure cis9, trans11 isomer of Conjugated Linoleic Acid -known as Rumenic Acid (RA)- improves cytoprotective defenses downstream through the activation of nuclear factor-E2-related factor-2(Nrf2). This capability, when Rumenic Acid is consumed in the form of foods, is still unknown. The ability of standard (St) or cow milk naturally-enriched in RA (En) to activate Nrf2 pathway and its impact on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis was comparatively evaluated.

Hyperspectral Raman images of human prostatic cells have been collected and analysed with several approaches to reveal differences among normal and tumor cell lines. The objective of the study was to test the potential of different chemometric methods in providing diagnostic responses. We focused our analysis on the ν(CH) region (2800-3100cm) owing to its optimal Signal-to-Noise ratio and because the main differences between the spectra of the two cell lines were observed in this frequency range.

The secoiridoids are the main class of specialized metabolites present in olive (Olea europaea L.) fruit. In particular, the secoiridoid oleuropein strongly influences olive oil quality because of its bitterness, which is a desirable trait.
