  • Metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS) can improve pregnancy outcomes for obese women and significantly reduce the occurrence of gestational diabetes (GD) compared to non-operated women with similar age and body mass index (BMI).
  • A study comparing pregnancies of women who had MBS to matched controls revealed a lower frequency of GD post-surgery (7.6% vs. 19%) and lower fasting blood glucose levels and birth weight for those who had the surgery.
  • However, MBS was also linked to a higher occurrence of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) babies, which became less significant after accounting for smoking habits, highlighting the need to balance benefits with potential risks associated with MBS during pregnancy.

In tetrapods, BMP-signaling coordinates limb outgrowth, skeleton patterning, and apoptosis during the formation of their typical autopod structures, the digits. In addition, inhibition of BMP signaling during mouse limb development leads to the persistence and enlargement of an important signaling center, the apical ectodermal ridge (AER), and consequent digit defects. Interestingly, during fish fin development there is a natural elongation of the AER, rapidly converted into an apical finfold (FF), in which osteoblasts differentiate into dermal fin-rays used in aquatic locomotion.

Background: Epigenetic alterations are known contributors to cancer development and aggressiveness. Additional to alterations in cancer cells, aberrant epigenetic marks are present in cells of the tumor microenvironment, including lymphocytes and tumor-associated macrophages, which are often overlooked but known to be a contributing factor to a favorable environment for tumor growth. Therefore, the main aim of this review is to give an overview of the epigenetic alterations affecting immune cells in the tumor microenvironment to provoke an immunosuppressive function and contribute to cancer development.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are relevant means for transferring signals across cells and facilitate propagation of oncogenic stimuli promoting disease evolution and metastatic spread in cancer patients. Here, we investigated the release of miR-424 in circulating small EVs or exosomes from prostate cancer patients and assessed the functional implications in multiple experimental models. We found higher frequency of circulating miR-424 positive EVs in patients with metastatic prostate cancer compared to patients with primary tumors and BPH.

MicroRNAs have emerged as new diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers for breast cancer. Herein, we analysed miR-99a-5p expression levels in primary tumours and plasma of breast cancer patients to evaluate its usefulness as a minimally invasive diagnostic biomarker. Background: The aetiology of pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis (PAM) in animals is still unknown. In humans, this pulmonary disorder is a rare autosomal recessive disorder triggered by a mutation in the gene SLC34A2, which causes deposition and aggregation of calcium and phosphate in the pulmonary parenchyma with formation of microliths. Although histopathological examination is required for a definite diagnosis, in humans, imaging modalities such as computed tomography can demonstrate typical patterns of the disease.
