The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of two vitrification techniques on the extra cellular matrix (ECM) and ovarian follicular development. The ovarian cortex was fragmented (9 mm(3)) and divided into six groups, viz. fresh control, cultured control, vitrified by the Ovarian Tissue Cryosystem (OTC) method, conventional solid surface vitrification (SSV) method, OTC/cultured and SSV/cultured.

The purpose of this study was to develop automatic classifiers to simplify the clinical use and increase the accuracy of the forced oscillation technique (FOT) in the categorisation of airway obstruction level in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The data consisted of FOT parameters obtained from 168 volunteers (42 healthy and 126 COPD subjects with four different levels of obstruction). The first part of this study showed that FOT parameters do not provide adequate accuracy in identifying COPD subjects in the first levels of obstruction, as well as in discriminating between close levels of obstruction.

Stem cells are characterized by their ability to differentiate into multiple cell lineages and display the paracrine effect. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of therapy with bone marrow cells (BMCs) on blood glucose, lipid metabolism and aortic wall remodeling in mice through the administration of a high fat diet and subsequent BMCs transplantation. C57BL/6 mice were fed a control diet (CO group) or an atherogenic diet (AT group).

Obesity is epidemic in the western world and central adipose tissue deposition points to increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, independently of any association between obesity and other cardiovascular risk factors. Physical exercise has been used as non-pharmacological treatment to significantly reverse/attenuate obesity comorbidities. In this study we have investigated effects of exercise and/or dietary modification on microcirculatory function, body composition, serum glucose, iNOS and eNOS expression on 120 male hamsters treated for 12 weeks with high fat chow (HF, n = 30) starting on the 21st day of birth.

Cord blood is a source of hematopoietic stem cells used in transplantation in which hematopoietic reconstitution is necessary. This transplant modality requires the cryopreservation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). Dimethyl sulfoxide has been used as a cryoprotectant (CPA) in the cryopreservation of HSCs; however, it has been demonstrated that Me2SO exhibits toxic side effects to the human body.

An increasing number of neurodevelopmental diseases have been associated with disruption of chromatin remodeling in eukaryotes. Lysine(K)-specific demethylase 5C (KDM5C) is a versatile epigenetic regulator that removes di- and tri-methyl groups of lysine 4 on histone H3 (H3K4) from transcriptional targets and is essential for neuronal survival and dendritic growth. Mutations in KDM5C gene, located at Xp11.

The excessive fat intake generally might induce obesity and metabolic disturbances. Thus, the goal of the study was to assess the role of high-fat diets containing soybean or canola oil on intra-abdominal adiposity and pancreatic morphology and function of young rats. After weaning, rats were fed with a control diet (7S) or a high-fat diet containing soybean oil (19S) or canola oil (19C) until they were 60 days old, when they were sacrificed.

Background: Cigarette smoke is associated with decreased female fertility, causing damage to ovarian function and disturbing follicle development. However, the effects of cigarette toxicants on ovarian function depend on duration and intensity of exposure. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of brief, intense exposure to tobacco smoke on granulosa cell number, oocyte growth, and follicle size during puberty in female Swiss mice.

Methods: Twenty varicose vein specimens were atraumatically harvested from 20 women undergoing lower extremity primary varicose vein excision. The patients were divided into groups according to age (<50 years, >50 years) and the presence of leg edema (CEAP, class 2 or 3).

Purpose: Adipocytes and osteoblasts were derived from a common progenitor, and canola oil intake may have an adipogenic and osteogenic effect. Thus, our objective was to evaluate the effect on adipocyte, lipid profile, glucose homeostasis, and bone of canola oil as main lipid source on the diet during development.
Methods: After weaning, rats were divided into two groups (n = 10 per group): control (S) and experimental (C) diets containing 7 mL/100 g soybean or canola oil, respectively.

Mutations in the Jumonji AT-rich interactive domain 1C (JARID1C/SMCX/KDM5C) gene, located at Xp11.22, are emerging as frequent causes of X-linked intellectual disability (XLID). KDM5C encodes for a member of an ARID protein family that harbors conserved DNA-binding motifs and acts as a histone H3 lysine 4 demethylase, suggesting a potential role in epigenetic regulation during development, cell growth and differentiation.

Transplantation using hematopoietic stem cells from umbilical cord blood (UCB) is a life-saving treatment option for patients with select oncologic diseases, immunologic diseases, bone marrow failure, and others. Often this transplant modality requires cryopreservation and storage of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), which need to remain cryopreserved in UCB banks for possible future use. The most widely used cryoprotectant is dimethylsulfoxide (Me(2)SO), but at 37 degrees C, it is toxic to cells and for patients, infusion of cryopreserved HSC with Me(2)SO has been associated with side effects.

Neonatal malnutrition is associated with metabolic syndrome in adulthood. Maternal hypoprolactinaemia at the end of lactation (a precocious weaning model) caused obesity, leptin resistance and hypothyroidism in adult offspring, suggesting an association of prolactin (PRL) and programming of metabolic dysfunctions. Metabolic syndrome pathogenesis is still unclear, but abdominal obesity, higher triglycerides, lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL-c) and insulin resistance have been proposed to be important factors involved.

Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is a therapeutic procedure that involves transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC). To date, there are three sources of HSC for clinical use: bone marrow; mobilized peripheral blood; and umbilical cord blood (UCB). Depending on the stem cell source or type of transplantation, these cells are cryopreserved.

Objective: The risks of metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) rely on the interaction between insulin resistance, metabolic abnormalities, inflammation and vascular dysfunction. Insulin sensitizers counteract some of these abnormalities. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of rosiglitazone (ROSI) on vascular reactivity, adipokines and inflammatory markers in a group of non-diabetic subjects with MetSyn.

Light cigarette (LC) exposure is supposed to be less hazardous with a decreased incidence of cancer and tobacco-associated diseases. C57BL/6 mouse groups were subjected to smoke from 3, 6 or 12 LC for 60 days and compared with mice exposed to ambient air (EAA) in order to study lung injury by morphometrical and biochemical methods. Psidium guajava (guava) leaf is a phytotherapic used in folk medicine to treat gastrointestinal and respiratory disturbances and is used as anti-inflammatory medicine. In nuclear medicine, blood constituents (BC) are labelled with technetium-99m ((99m)Tc) and used to image procedures. However, data have demonstrated that synthetic or natural drugs could modify the labelling of BC with (99m)Tc.

Cigarette smoke (CS) causes pulmonary emphysema in humans and elastin degradation plays a key role in its pathogenesis. Previous studies on CS-exposed animals have been equivocal and have not clearly demonstrated the progression of the disease. In this study, morphometry was used to assess lung modifications to alveolar septa, airspaces, elastic and collagen fibers, and alveolar macrophages.
