Latin American countries are distinguished by their highly admixed populations, characterized by a significant preservation of Native American matrilineal ancestry. This contrasts with the paternal lineages, which exhibit different patterns due to pronounced sex-biased mating practices during the colonial period. Uniparental genetic markers have been instrumental in population genetics, facilitating the reconstruction of human settlement histories and serving forensic identification purposes.

This study investigated antibiotic resistance and presence of persister cells in strains belonging to capsular types Ia/ST-103, III/ST-17, and V/ST-26 in biofilm-like environments. strains were susceptible to penicillin, clindamycin, and erythromycin. Resistance genes were associated with M (80%), O (20%), B (80%), and B (40%).

This study investigated the impact of social isolation in Carioca High-Conditioned Freezing (CHF) rats, an animal model of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Animals selected for high (CHF), low trait anxiety (Carioca Low-Conditioned Freezing, CLF), and control rats from randomly bred populations (CTL) were housed in groups or kept isolated in their cages for 14 consecutive days. On the fifteenth day, all animals underwent the Forced Swimming Test (FST), where the latency to immobility was assessed as a depressive-like measure.

The gut microbiome has emerged as a crucial player in modulating cancer therapies, including radiotherapy. In the case of breast cancer, the interplay between the microbiome and radiotherapy-derived metabolites may enhance therapeutic outcomes and minimize adverse effects. In this review, we explore the bidirectional relationship between the gut microbiome and breast cancer.

Over the last few years, during the pandemic, the Brazilian population has suffered several problems, ranging from health to socioeconomic impacts. When we consider Brazilian science, there has been an undeniable scientific delay generated by the pandemic, especially in areas that are not related to the coronavirus. In this context, with the aim of fostering collaboration among researchers in the field of Developmental Origins of Health and Diseases (DOHaD) and enhancing the potential for implementing public health strategies to prevent noncommunicable chronic diseases, the Brazilian Association of Developmental Origins of Health and Diseases (DOHaD Brazil) was established in 2020.

Emerita species (Scopoli, 1777; Crustacea: Decapoda: Pleocyemata: Anomura: Hippidae), commonly known as mole crabs, are specialized in burying and distributed in the swash zone of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Ocean sandy beaches. This genus has received increasing attention in scientific studies owing to its ecological importance. It is used as a model species to evaluate the ecological state of communities and as a bioindicator of environmental health and quality.

A maternal vaccine to protect newborns against invasive infection is a developing medical need. The vaccine should be offered during the third trimester of pregnancy and induce strong immune responses and placental transfer of protective antibodies. Polysaccharide vaccines against conjugated to protein carriers are in advanced stages of development.

Background: Flexibility is a component of functional capacity and is relevant in maintaining the musculature and structures adjacent to the joints. Then, the improvement of the flexibility must be a critical goal in the rehabilitation programs. By improving flexibility in knee osteoarthritis (KOA) individuals, the pain is relieved, the risk of injury is reduced, and the need for surgical interventions is delayed.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease globally, with a fast-growing prevalence. The etiology of PD exhibits a multifactorial complex nature and remains challenging. Herein, we described clinical, molecular, and integrative bioinformatics findings from a Brazilian female affected by Early-Onset PD (EOPD) harboring a recurrent homozygous pathogenic deletion in the parkin RBR E3 ubiquitin protein ligase gene (PRKN; NM_004562.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a rapidly growing neurodegenerative disorder characterized by dopaminergic neuron loss in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SN) and aggregation of α-synuclein. Its aetiology involves a multifaceted interplay among genetic, environmental, and epigenetic factors. We integrated brain gene expression data from PD patients to construct a comprehensive regulatory network encompassing messenger RNAs (mRNAs), microRNAs (miRNAs), circular RNAs (circRNAs) and, for the first time, RNA binding proteins (RBPs).

The endocrine pancreas is composed of clusters of cell groups called pancreatic islets. These cells are responsible for the synthesis and secretion of hormones crucial for glycemic homeostasis, such as insulin and glucagon. Therefore, these cells were the targets of many studies.

Many molecular mechanisms that lead to the host antibody response to COVID-19 vaccines remain largely unknown. In this study, we used serum antibody detection combined with whole blood RNA-based transcriptome analysis to investigate variability in vaccine response in healthy recipients of a booster (third) dose schedule of the mRNA BNT162b2 vaccine against COVID-19. The cohort was divided into two groups: (1) low-stable individuals, with antibody concentration anti-SARS-CoV IgG S1 below 0.

Tributyltin (TBT) is the chemical substance commonly used worldwide to prevent biofouling of vessels. Due to its ability to bioaccumulate and biomagnify, even after being banned, significant concentrations of TBT can be detected in sediment, affecting marine and human life. Although studies have shown that direct exposure to TBT alters physiological parameters in mammals, the relationship between exposure to TBT during pregnancy and lactation, considered critical windows for metabolic programming, has not been fully elucidated.

Santander, located in the Andean region of Colombia, is one of the 32 departments of the country. Its population was shaped by intercontinental admixture between autochthonous native Americans, European settlers, and African slaves. To establish forensic databases of haplotype frequencies, the evaluation of population substructure is crucial to capture the genetic diversity in admixed populations.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether high-fat (HF) diet intake during puberty can program obesity as well as generate glucose imbalance and hepatic metabolic dysfunctions in adult life. Male Wistar rats were randomly assigned into two groups: rats fed standard chow (NF) and rats fed a HF from postnatal 30-day-old (PND30) until PND60. Then, both groups were fed a standard chow from PND60 until PND120.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an increasingly neurodegenerative disorder that causes progressive cognitive decline and memory impairment. Despite extensive research, the underlying causes of late-onset AD (LOAD) are still in progress. This study aimed to establish a network of competing regulatory interactions involving circular RNAs (circRNAs), microRNAs (miRNAs), RNA-binding proteins (RBPs), and messenger RNAs (mRNAs) connected to LOAD.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a widespread neurodegenerative disorder, whose complex aetiology remains under construction. While rare variants have been associated with the monogenic PD form, most PD cases are influenced by multiple genetic and environmental aspects. Nonetheless, the pathophysiological pathways and molecular networks involved in monogenic/idiopathic PD overlap, and genetic variants are decisive in elucidating the convergent underlying mechanisms of PD.
