What is the central question of this study? The aim was to propose an animal model for investigating the effects of immunosuppressive monotherapy on gastrointestinal motility using a non-invasive biomagnetic technique. What is main finding and its importance? In our experimental study, immunosuppressive drugs currently in use accelerated gastric emptying whilst increasing the frequency and amplitude of gastric contractions after treatment, except for Mycophenolate and azathioprine. Alternating current biosusceptometry is a useful tool to evaluate side-effects of drugs on the gastrointestinal tract, which will help in understanding the symptoms and improving clinical management of patients.

Parasites of the Leishmania genus are the causative agents of leishmaniasis in humans, a disease that affects more than 12 million people worldwide. In this study was evaluated in vitro leishmanicidal activity of 2-N,N'-dialkylamino-1,4-naphthoquinone derivatives, covering a series of fourteen 2-N-morpholino-, 2-N-thiomorpholino, 2-N-piperidino, 2-N-(N-methyl)-piperazino naphthoquinones (1a-n) derived from nor-lapachol and lawsone, belong to some other di-alkyaminoderivatives. At the cytotoxicity assay on peritoneal macrophages, the compounds possessing larger alkyl groups and N-methyl-piperazino moiety (1d, 1h, 1i and 1k), showed toxic effects similar to the standard drug used pentamidine.

The involvement of miRNA in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) pathogenesis has increasingly become a focus of epigenetic studies. Despite advances, the number of known miRNAs with a consistent expression response during epileptogenesis is still small. Addressing this situation requires additional miRNA profiling studies coupled to detailed individual expression analyses.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is characterized by spontaneous recurrent seizures, starting from secondary functional disorders due to several insults, including self-sustaining continuous seizures identified as status epilepticus (SE). Although hypoglycemia has been associated with SE, the effect of inhibition of the Na(+)/glucose cotransporters (SGLTs) on hippocampus during SE is still unknown. Here we evaluated the functional role of SGLT in the pattern of limbic seizures and neurodegeneration process after pilocarpine (PILO)-induced SE.

The present study used behavioral analyses to investigate the involvement of the NO/cGMP/KATP pathway, serotoninergic, and opioid systems in the antinociceptive action of [(±)-(2,4,6-cis)-4-chloro-6-(naphthalen-1-yl)-tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-yl]methanol (CTHP) in mice. Oral administration of CTHP (1, 5, 10, and 30 mg/kg) exerted effects at higher doses in chemical models of nociception (the acetic acid writhing and formalin tests) as well as a thermal model (the tail-flick test). It was also found that pretreatment with L-N-nitroarginine methyl ester (nonselective nitric oxide synthase inhibitor), 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (selective inhibitor of nitric oxide-sensitive guanosyl cyclase), glibenclamide (selective ATP-sensitive K channel blocker), naloxone (nonselective opioid receptor blocker), and nor-binaltorphimine (selective κ-opioid receptor blocker), but not methylnaltrexone (peripheral μ-opioid receptor blocker) or naltrindole (selective δ-opioid receptor blocker), reversed the antinociceptive effect of CTHP.

Previously, we demonstrated that caulerpine has spasmolytic effect on guinea pig ileum. The aim of this study was to investigate pathways of its spasmolytic action. We test caulerpine against phasic contractions induced by carbachol in the circular layer of guinea pig ileum and this alkaloid did not inhibit these contractions, indicating that caulerpine did not interfering with the mobilisation of Ca from intracellular stores.

The molecular mechanisms underlying epileptogenesis have been widely investigated by differential gene expression approach, especially RT-qPCR methodology. However, controversial findings highlight the occurrence of unpredictable sources of variance in the experimental designs. Here, we investigated if diurnal rhythms of transcript's levels may impact on differential gene expression analysis in hippocampus of rats with experimental epilepsy.

Analyses of species-diversity patterns of remote islands have been crucial to the development of biogeographic theory, yet little is known about corresponding patterns in functional traits on islands and how, for example, they may be affected by the introduction of exotic species. We collated trait data for spiders and beetles and used a functional diversity index (FRic) to test for nonrandomness in the contribution of endemic, other native (also combined as indigenous), and exotic species to functional-trait space across the nine islands of the Azores. In general, for both taxa and for each distributional category, functional diversity increases with species richness, which, in turn scales with island area.

Real-time quantitative RT-PCR (qPCR) is one of the most powerful techniques for analyzing miRNA expression because of its sensitivity and specificity. However, in this type of analysis, a suitable normalizer is required to ensure that gene expression is unaffected by the experimental condition. To the best of our knowledge, there are no reported studies that performed a detailed identification and validation of suitable reference genes for miRNA qPCR during the epileptogenic process.
