Sleep cycles are defined as episodes of non-rapid eye movement (non-REM) sleep followed by an episode of REM sleep. Fractal or aperiodic neural activity is a well-established marker of arousal and sleep stages measured using electroencephalography. We introduce a new concept of 'fractal cycles' of sleep, defined as a time interval during which time series of fractal activity descend to their local minimum and ascend to the next local maximum.

Traditionally categorized as a uniform sleep phase, rapid eye movement sleep exhibits substantial heterogeneity with its phasic and tonic constituents showing marked differences regarding many characteristics. Here, we investigate how tonic and phasic states differ with respect to aperiodic neural activity, a marker of arousal and sleep. Rapid eye movement sleep heterogeneity was assessed using either binary phasic-tonic (n = 97) or continuous (in 60/97 participants) approach.

Article Synopsis
  • Respecting patient autonomy is essential in medicine, but can clash with the principles of beneficence (doing good) and nonmaleficence (doing no harm), especially in complex cases like oral health care.
  • The study analyzed scholarly articles to understand how this ethical conflict arises and how it has been addressed in clinical scenarios, particularly in maxillofacial treatments.
  • The results showed that while most recommendations leaned towards prioritizing medical benefits for the patient, there were also instances where patient autonomy was upheld, particularly for preventive care or low-impact interventions.

Centre for Brain Science, Department of Psychology, University of Essex, Colchester, United Kingdom.

Humans are highly social, typically without this ability requiring noticeable efforts. Yet, such social fluency poses challenges both for the human brain to compute and for scientists to study. Over the last few decades, neuroscientific research of human sociality has witnessed a shift in focus from single-brain analysis to complex dynamics occurring across several brains, posing questions about what these dynamics mean and how they relate to multifaceted behavioural models.

Targeting sleep physiology to modulate glymphatic brain clearance.

Physiology (Bethesda)

November 2024

Radboud University Medical Centre, Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behavior, Nijmegen, Netherlands.

Article Synopsis
  • Sleep is crucial for removing neurotoxic substances like amyloid-β from the brain, and poor sleep can lead to neurotoxins building up, risking neuron death and increasing the chances of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
  • There is a two-way relationship between sleep issues and neurodegeneration, indicating that sleep impairment may start affecting brain health long before symptoms show up.
  • The review discusses methods to enhance sleep's restorative functions through sensory, transcranial, pharmacological, and behavioral interventions aimed at boosting brain clearance and preventing cognitive decline.

Variable sleep patterns are a risk factor for disease, but the reasons some people express greater within-individual variability of sleep characteristics remains poorly understood. In our study, we leverage BSETS, a novel mobile EEG-based dataset in which 1901 nights in total were recorded from 267 extensively phenotyped participants to identify factors related to demographics, mental health, personality, chronotype and sleep characteristics which predict variability in sleep, including detailed sleep macrostructure metrics. Young age, late chronotype, and napping emerged as robust correlates of increased sleep variability.

VP Dole Research Group, G. De Lisio Institute of Behavioural Sciences, Via di Pratale 3, 56121 Pisa, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Cocaine use has become a significant public health issue, with roughly 24.6 million users globally and 1 million diagnosed with cocaine use disorder, according to the 2023 World Drug Report.
  • While short-term effects of cocaine are well-documented, there is a lack of comprehensive data on its medium and long-term impacts, which suggest increased risks for cardiovascular issues and neurodegenerative diseases.
  • The paper proposes that chronic cocaine use leads to neurobiological changes affecting neurotransmitter systems, particularly dopaminergic pathways, which may increase vulnerability to neurodegenerative disorders and highlights the need for further research to inform therapeutic interventions.

Spontaneous reactivation of brain activity from learning to a subsequent off-line period has been implicated as a neural mechanism underlying memory consolidation. However, similarities in brain activity may also emerge as a result of individual, trait-like characteristics. Here, we introduced a novel approach for analyzing continuous electroencephalography (EEG) data to investigate learning-induced changes as well as trait-like characteristics in brain activity underlying memory consolidation.
