A major limitation for the efficient and high-throughput structure analysis of biomolecules using cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) is the difficulty of preparing cryo-EM samples with controlled ice thickness at the nanoscale. The silicon (Si)-based chip, which has a regular array of micro-holes with graphene oxide (GO) window patterned on a thickness-controlled silicon nitride (SixNy) film, has been developed by applying microelectromechanical system (MEMS) techniques. UV photolithography, chemical vapor deposition, wet and dry etching of the thin film, and drop-casting of 2D nanosheet materials were used for mass-production of the micro-patterned chips with GO windows.

2D multiferroics with combined ferroic orders have gained attention owing to their novel functionality and underlying science. Intrinsic ferroelastic-ferroelectric multiferroicity in single-crystalline van der Waals rhenium dichalcogenides, whose symmetries are broken by the Peierls distortion and layer-stacking order, is demonstrated. Ferroelastic switching of the domain orientation and accompanying anisotropic properties is achieved with 1% uniaxial strain using the polymer encapsulation method.

The development of an efficient, sustainable, and inexpensive metal-free catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) photoelectrochemical water splitting is very demanding for energy conversion processes such as green fuel generators, fuel cells, and metal-air batteries. Herein, we have developed a metal-free pyrene-based nitrogen and sulfur containing conjugated microporous polymer having a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area (761 m g) and a low bandgap of 2.09 eV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline solution.

Rechargeable aqueous zinc batteries (AZBs) are one of the promising options for large-scale electrical energy storage owing to their safety, affordability and environmental friendliness. During the past decade, there have been remarkable advancements in the AZBs technology, which are achieved through intensive efforts not only in the area of electrode materials but also in the fundamental understandings of non-electrode components such as electrolytes, solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), current collectors, binders, and separators. In particular, the breakthroughs in the non-electrode components should not be underestimated in having enabled the AZBs to attain a higher energy and power density beyond that of the conventional AZBs, proving their critical role.

The poor catalyst stability in acidic oxidation evolution reaction (OER) has been a long-time issue. Herein, we introduce electron-deficient metal on semiconducting metal oxides-consisting of Ir (Rh, Au, Ru)-MoO embedded by graphitic carbon layers (IMO) using an electrospinning method. We systematically investigate IMO's structure, electron transfer behaviors, and OER catalytic performance by combining experimental and theoretical studies.

Single-phase formation of active metal oxides on supports has been vigorously pursued in many catalytic applications to suppress undesired reactions and to determine direct structure-property relationships. However, this is difficult to achieve in nanoscale range because the effect of non-uniform metal-support interfaces becomes dominant in the overall catalyst growth, leading to the nucleation of various metastable oxides. Herein, we develop a supported single-phase corundum-Rh O (I) nanocatalyst by utilizing controlled interaction between metal oxide and h-BN support.

Cryogenic-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) is the preferred method to determine 3D structures of proteins and to study diverse material systems that intrinsically have radiation or air sensitivity. Current cryo-EM sample preparation methods provide limited control over the sample quality, which limits the efficiency and high throughput of 3D structure analysis. This is partly because it is difficult to control the thickness of the vitreous ice that embeds specimens, in the range of nanoscale, depending on the size and type of materials of interest.

Chimeric antigen receptor-T (CAR-T) cell immunotherapy has shown impressive clinical outcomes for hematologic malignancies. However, its broader applications are challenged due to its complex ex vivo cell-manufacturing procedures and low therapeutic efficacy against solid tumors. The limited therapeutic effects are partially due to limited CAR-T cell infiltration to solid tumors and inactivation of CAR-T cells by the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment.

Soft neuroprosthetics that monitor signals from sensory neurons and deliver motor information can potentially replace damaged nerves. However, achieving long-term stability of devices interfacing peripheral nerves is challenging, since dynamic mechanical deformations in peripheral nerves cause material degradation in devices. Here, a durable and fatigue-resistant soft neuroprosthetic device is reported for bidirectional signaling on peripheral nerves.

By means of density functional theory (DFT) computations, we explored the potential of carbon- and nitrogen-doped Mo2P (CMP and NMP) layered materials as the representative of transition metal phosphides (TMPs) for the development of lithium-ion battery (LIB) anode materials, paying special attention to the synergistic effects of the dopants. Both CMP and NMP have exceptional stabilities and excellent electronic conductivity, and a high theoretical maximum storage capacity of ∼ 486 mA h g-1. Li-ion diffusion barriers on the two-dimensional (2D) CMP and NMP surfaces are extremely low (∼0.

In operando observation of reaction intermediates is crucial for unraveling reaction mechanisms. To address the sensitivity limitations of commercial ReactIR, a flow cell was integrated with a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer yielding a "flow FTIR" device coupled with an NMR spectrometer for the elucidation of reaction mechanisms. The former device detects the low-intensity IR peaks of reaction intermediates by adjusting the path length of the FTIR sample cell, whereas the flow NMR allows the quantitative analysis of reaction species, thus offsetting the limitations of IR spectroscopy resulting from different absorption coefficients of the normal modes.

The formation mechanism of colloidal nanoparticles is complex because significant nonclassical pathways coexist with the conventional nucleation and growth processes. Particularly, the coalescence of the growing clusters determines the final morphology and crystallinity of the synthesized nanoparticles. However, the experimental investigation of the coalescence mechanism is a challenge because the process is highly kinetic and correlates with surface ligands that dynamically modify the surface energy and the interparticle interactions of nanoparticles.

We fabricated plasmonic hybrid nanostructures consisting of MoS monolayer flakes and Au nanogratings with a period of 500 nm. The angle-resolved reflectance and photoluminescence spectra of the hybrid nanostructures clearly indicated a coupling between surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and incoming photons. The surface photovoltage (SPV) maps could visualize the spatial distribution of net charges while shining light on the sample.

Because of poor engraftment and safety concerns regarding mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy, MSC-derived exosomes have emerged as an alternative cell-free therapy for myocardial infarction (MI). However, the diffusion of exosomes out of the infarcted heart following injection and the low productivity limit the potential of clinical applications. Here, we developed exosome-mimetic extracellular nanovesicles (NVs) derived from iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs)-incorporated MSCs (IONP-MSCs).

The phosphoinositide 3‑kinase (PI3K) signaling pathway plays an important role in human cancer as it regulates critical cellular functions, such as survival, proliferation and metabolism. In the present study, a novel PI3Kα inhibitor (HS‑146) was synthesized and its anticancer effects on MCF‑7, MDA‑MB‑231, SKBR3 and BT‑474 human breast cancer cell lines were confirmed. HS‑146 was found to be most effective in inhibiting the proliferation of MCF‑7 cells and in inducing cell cycle arrest in the G0/G1 phase by downregulating cyclin D1, cyclin E, cyclin‑dependent kinase (Cdk)2 and Cdk4, and upregulating p21Waf1/Cip1 protein levels in this cell line.

Edge contacts between two-dimensional (2D) materials in the in-plane direction can achieve minimal contact area and low contact resistance, producing atomically thin devices with improved performance. Particularly, lateral heterojunctions of metallic graphene and semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit small Schottky barrier heights due to graphene's low work-function. However, issues exist with the fabrication of highly transparent and flexible multi-functional devices utilizing lateral heterostructures (HSs) of graphene and TMDs via spatially controlled growth.

This study aimed to demonstrate a reliable automatic segmentation method for independently separating reduced diffusion and decreased perfusion areas in ischemic stroke brains using constrained nonnegative matrix factorization (cNMF) pattern recognition in directional intravoxel incoherent motion MRI (IVIM-MRI). First, the feasibility of cNMF-based segmentation of IVIM signals was investigated in both simulations and in vivo experiments. The cNMF analysis was independently performed for S -normalized and scaled (by the difference between the maximum and minimum) IVIM signals, respectively.

Effective charge separation and rapid transport of photogenerated charge carriers without self-oxidation in transition metal dichalcogenide photocatalysts are required for highly efficient and stable hydrogen generation. Here, we report that a molecular junction as an electron transfer path toward two-dimensional rhenium disulfide (2D ReS) nanosheets from zero-dimensional titanium dioxide (0D TiO) nanoparticles induces high efficiency and stability of solar hydrogen generation by balanced charge transport of photogenerated charge carriers. The molecular junctions are created through the chemical bonds between the functionalized ReS nanosheets (, -COOH groups) and -OH groups of two-phase TiO (, ReS-CHC(═O)-O-TiO denoted by ReS-BzO-TiO).

Here, we found two genomic safe harbor (GSH) candidates from chromosomes 3 and 8, based on large-scale population-based cohort data from 4,694 Koreans by CNV analysis. Furthermore, estimated genotype of these CNVRs was validated by quantitative real-time PCR, and epidemiological data examined no significant genetic association between diseases or traits and two CNVRs. After screening the GSH candidates by approaches, we designed TALEN pairs to integrate EGFP expression cassette into human cell lines in order to confirm the functionality of GSH candidates in an setting.
