Disruptions in lacrimal function can lead to various conditions, including chronic nasolacrimal duct obstruction and dacryocystitis, which may cause symptoms like excessive tearing, pain, and recurrent infections. In cases where pharmacological treatments are insufficient, surgical intervention becomes essential, which is widely used to restore effective tear drainage. This study evaluated postoperative outcomes of laser-assisted dacryocystorhinostomy (LDCR) in 48 patients, totaling 56 treated eyes, over a follow-up period of 6 months to 3.

Relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis is associated with changes in Jak/STAT pathways in immune cells, but the influence of disease-modifying drugs on these pathways is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of first-line disease-modifying drugs used in treatment of RRMS on expression of the STAT pathway and T-cell-related genes in the blood and on serum concentrations of sgp130 and TGF-β1 in women, as well as on the level of phosphorylated STAT3 and STAT5 proteins in T cells of untreated patients and heathy controls. Expression of STAT1, STAT3, STAT5A, STAT5B, SOCS1, SOCS3, FOXP3, IKZF2, RORC and ICOS genes in the blood of untreated RRMS patients, in the blood of patients treated with interferon-β, glatiramer acetate, dimethyl fumarate or teriflunomide and in the blood of healthy controls was evaluated using droplet digital PCR.

Forensic entomologists use the maturity of necrophagous larvae to estimate the minimum post-mortem interval (PMI), ideally taking account of effects that xenobiotics in the corpse may have on insect maturation. Forensic toxicologists may employ larvae to detect drugs in drug-related deaths when human samples are unavailable. Yet current pre-analytical practices of these two professions differ significantly, impeding the successful use of the same samples.

Forecasting influenza epidemics in China using transmission dynamic model with absolute humidity.

Infect Dis Model

March 2025

School of Public Health, Fudan University, Key Laboratory of Public Health Safety, Ministry of Education, Shanghai, China.

Background: An influenza forecasting system is critical to influenza epidemic preparedness. Low temperature has long been recognized as a condition favoring influenza epidemic, yet it fails to justify the summer influenza peak in tropics/subtropics. Recent studies have suggested that absolute humidity (AH) had a U-shape relationship with influenza survival and transmission across climate zones, indicating that a unified influenza forecasting system could be established for China with various climate conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the link between blood pressure variability during the initial stages of acute stroke and patients' functional outcomes after one month, aiming to identify factors that could modify this variability.
  • Data from 13,206 participants revealed that higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure variability is significantly associated with poorer functional outcomes, particularly when measured by standard deviation (SD).
  • Factors such as age, female sex, high body mass index, and certain lifestyle habits contribute to increased blood pressure variability, indicating that managing these factors could improve outcomes for stroke patients.
