Recently, gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) has emerged as an important regulator of reproduction in birds and mammals. This RFamide neuropeptide has neuromodulatory functions and controls the synthesis and/or release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and gonadotropins. Although teleosts represent about half of all living vertebrates, scientific and technological advances on the Gnih system in fish are scarce, contradictory, and inconclusive.

In this work, a method for the analysis of 24 PAHs in 19 different matrices, including fish tissues, feeds and feed ingredients, has been developed using gas chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization source (GC-APCI-MS/MS). The method is based on a modification of the unbuffered QuEChERS method, using freezing as an additional clean-up step and applying a 20-fold dilution factor to the final extract. The procedure was also tested for 15 pesticides and 7 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners in order to widen the scope of the method.

Plant ingredients and processed animal proteins are alternative feedstuffs for fish feeds in aquaculture. However, their use can introduce contaminants like pesticides that are not previously associated with marine Atlantic salmon and gilthead sea bream farming. This study covers the screening of around 800 pesticides by gas chromatography (GC) and liquid chromatography (LC) coupled to high resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry in matrices throughout the entire marine food production chain.

The importance of histamine in the physiology of the testis in mammals and reptiles has been recently shown. Histamine receptors (Hrs) are well conserved in fish and are functional in several fish species. We report here for the first time that histamine and the mRNA of Hrh1, Hrh2 and Hrh3 are all present in the gonad of the hermaphrodite teleost fish gilthead seabream.

There is an on-going trend for developing more sustainable salmon feed in which traditionally applied marine feed ingredients are replaced with alternatives. Processed animal products (PAPs) have been re-authorized as novel high quality protein ingredients in 2013. These PAPs may harbor undesirable substances such as pharmaceuticals and metabolites which are not previously associated with salmon farming, but might cause a potential risk for feed and food safety.

Plant ingredients and processed animal proteins (PAP) are suitable alternative feedstuffs for fish feeds in aquaculture practice, although their use can introduce contaminants that are not previously associated with marine salmon and gilthead sea bream farming. Mycotoxins are well known natural contaminants in plant feed material, although they also could be present on PAPs after fungi growth during storage. The present study surveyed commercially available plant ingredients (19) and PAP (19) for a wide range of mycotoxins (18) according to the EU regulations.

The Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) is a flatfish that exhibits severe reproductive dysfunctions in captivity. This study aimed at investigating the existence of a dopamine (DA) inhibitory tone on the reproductive axis of this species. Four groups of Senegalese sole breeders were treated with, saline (controls, CNT), the DA antagonist pimozide (PIM, 5 mg kg(-1)), gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa, 40 μg kg(-1)) or a combination of PIM+GnRHa (COMB).

The gonadotropins (GTHs), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), determine the reproductive competence of adult breeders, but also participate in the establishment of the reproductive axis at early stages of life. The present study aimed at studying, by real-time qPCR, the gene expression levels of GTH subunits (FSHbeta, LHbeta and the common glycoprotein alpha -GPalpha- subunit) during early development in Senegalese sole, from 1 to 100 days post hatching (dph). The FSHbeta, LHbeta and GPalpha transcripts were first detected at 1, 5 and 3 dph, respectively.

The Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) is a high value market flatfish, which aquaculture is compromised by severe reproductive problems; these are mostly found in soles hatched and raised in captivity (F1 generation). To gain knowledge on the reproductive dysfunctions observed in cultured (F1) Senegalese sole, this work aimed at developing a specific vitellogenin (VTG) ELISA, for the measurement of plasma VTG levels in this species. Profiles of VTG were correlated with those of sexual steroids and spawning performance of an F1 broodstock, during three consecutive years.
