Electronic address:

Egg quality traits are economically important in the poultry industry. To explore the genetic architecture and identify potential candidate genes, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed for 13 egg quality traits using data from whole-genome sequencing of 299 Longyan Shan-ma female ducks, including 12 quantitative traits and one qualitative trait, eggshell color (ESC; white, light green, green). From estimation of pedigree genetic parameters, heritability (h) ranged from 0.

Electronic address:

Avian coccidiosis caused by Eimeria is a serious parasitic disease that poses a threat to the poultry industry. Currently, prevention and treatment mainly rely on the administration of anticoccidials and live oocyst vaccines. However, the prevalence of drug resistance and the inherent limitations of live vaccines have driven the development of novel vaccines.

Disease is the main reason for the use of antimicrobials in calf rearing, and antibiotics are commonly used to treat calves, including for unknown diseases. This leads to antimicrobial resistance, which is a challenge to the livestock industry and public health. Plant products containing high levels of phytochemicals may improve the immunity and resistance of calves against infections, thereby reducing the use of antimicrobials.

A study using single-locus and multi-locus genome-wide association study to identify genes associated with teat number in Hu sheep.

Anim Genet

April 2022

National Germplasm Center of Domestic Animal Resources, Institute of Animal Science (IAS), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), Haidian, Beijing, China.

The multiple teats trait is common in many species of mammals and is considered related to lactation ability in swine. However, in Hu sheep, related gene research is still relatively limited. In this study, a genome-wide association study was used to identify genetic markers and genes related to the number of teats in the Hu sheep population, a native Chinese sheep breed.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied the autozygosity of five local Chinese sheep breeds by analyzing high-density SNP Chip data to identify runs of homozygosity (ROH), revealing how inbreeding has shaped their genomes.
  • Out of 96 sheep samples, they identified 3046 ROHs, mostly in segments longer than 1-5 Mb, with an overall average genome coverage of about 12%.
  • The study also found specific genomic regions associated with traits such as disease resistance and growth, suggesting the need for tailored breeding and conservation strategies for these indigenous breeds.

Conservation Assessment of the State Goat Farms by Using SNP Genotyping Data.

Genes (Basel)

June 2020

National Germplasm Center of Domestic Animal Resources, Institute of Animal Science (IAS), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), No. 2 Yuanmingyuan West Rd., Haidian, Beijing 100193, China.

Article Synopsis
  • This study highlights the global importance of conserving genetic resources to maintain diversity for food security, focusing on three goat breeds in state farms in China: Zhongwei male (ZWM), Arbas Cashmere male (ACM), and Jining Grey male (JGM).
  • Using advanced genomic techniques, researchers found these goat breeds have distinct genetic relationships, varying in inbreeding levels (1.79% for ZWM to 8.62% for ACM) and effective population sizes, with ACM showing concerning declines.
  • The findings suggest that genomic data can serve as a reliable alternative to traditional pedigree records for assessing inbreeding, offering valuable insights for better conservation management practices in livestock.

Embryo Biotechnology and Reproduction Laboratory and the Center of Domestic Animal Reproduction & Breeding, Institute of Animal Science (IAS), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), Beijing, China.

The fertilization capacity of sex-sorted sperms is seriously decreased, which inhibits its wide application. However, little information is still available about the effect of vitamin C (VC) and lycopene (Lyc) on the fertilization capacity of sex-sorted bull sperm. In this study, the washing medium and fertilization medium of sex-sorted sperm from three bull individuals were supplemented with different concentrations of VC (0, 1 × 10 , 1 × 10 , 1 × 10 , 1 × 10  M) or Lyc (0, 1 × 10 , 1 × 10 , 1 × 10 , 1 × 10 ).

Institute of Animal Science (IAS), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), No 2 Yuanmingyuan West Rd, Haidian, Beijing, 100193, China.

Background: Litter size is the most important reproductive trait which plays a crucial role in goat production. Therefore, improvement of litter size trait has been of increasing interest in goat industry as small improvement in litter size may lead to large profit. The recent Cashmere goat breeding program produced a high-reproductive genetic line of Arbas Cashmere goat.

Int J Mol Sci

August 2019

Embryo Biotechnology and Reproduction Laboratory and the Center of Domestic Animal Reproduction & Breeding, Institute of Animal Science (IAS), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), Beijing 100193, China.

Little information is available regarding the effect of melatonin on the quality and fertilization capability of sex-sorted bull sperm, and even less about the associated mechanism. Sex-sorted sperm from three individual bulls were washed twice in wash medium and incubated in a fertilization medium for 1.5 h, and each was supplemented with melatonin (0, 10 M, 10 M, 10 M, and 10 M).

Ruminants are the only extant mammalian group possessing bony (osseous) headgear. We obtained 221 transcriptomes from bovids and cervids and sequenced three genomes representing the only two pecoran lineages that convergently lack headgear. Comparative analyses reveal that bovid horns and cervid antlers share similar gene expression profiles and a common cellular basis developed from neural crest stem cells.

PCA-Based Multiple-Trait GWAS Analysis: A Powerful Model for Exploring Pleiotropy.

Animals (Basel)

December 2018

Cattle Genetics and Breeding Group, Institute of Animal Science (IAS), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), Beijing 100193, China.

Principal component analysis (PCA) is a potential approach that can be applied in multiple-trait genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to explore pleiotropy, as well as increase the power of quantitative trait loci (QTL) detection. In this study, the relationship of test single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) was determined between single-trait GWAS and PCA-based GWAS. We found that the estimated pleiotropic quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) β * ^ were in most cases larger than the single-trait model estimations ( β 1 ^ and β 2 ^ ).

Compared with the commercially available single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chip based on the Bead Chip technology, the solution hybrid selection (SHS)-based target enrichment SNP chip is not only design-flexible, but also cost-effective for genotype sequencing. In this study, we propose to design an animal SNP chip using the SHS-based target enrichment strategy for the first time. As an update to the international collaboration on goat research, a 66 K SNP chip for cashmere goat was created from the whole-genome sequencing data of 73 individuals.

Exome sequencing reveals genetic differentiation due to high-altitude adaptation in the Tibetan cashmere goat (Capra hircus).

BMC Genomics

February 2016

The Key Laboratory for Farm Animal Genetic Resources and Utilization of Ministry of Agriculture of China, Institute of Animal Science (IAS), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), Beijing, 100193, China.

Background: The Tibetan cashmere goat (Capra hircus), one of the most ancient breeds in China, has historically been a critical source of meat and cashmere production for local farmers. To adapt to the high-altitude area, extremely harsh climate, and hypoxic environment that the Tibetan cashmere goat lives in, this goat has developed distinct phenotypic traits compared to lowland breeds. However, the genetic components underlying this phenotypic adaptation remain largely unknown.
