At the end of the growth phase, mouse antral follicle oocytes acquire full developmental competence. In the mouse, this event is marked by the transition from the so-called non-surrounded nucleolus (NSN) chromatin configuration into the transcriptionally quiescent surrounded nucleolus (SN) configuration, which is named after a prominent perinucleolar condensed chromatin ring. However, the SN chromatin configuration alone is not sufficient for determining the developmental competence of the SN oocyte.

As a result of specific adaptations and habitat preferences strongly rheophilic fish species may show high levels of endemism. Many temperate rheophilic fish species were subjected to a series of range contractions during the Pleistocene, and then successfully expanded during the Holocene, colonising previously abandoned areas. The Carpathian barbel (Barbus carpathicus Kotlík, Tsigenopoulos, Ráb et Berrebi 2002) occurs in the montane streams in three basins of the main Central European rivers in the northern part of the Carpathian range.

A comprehensive proteome map of T-lymphoblastic leukemia cells and its alterations after daunorubicin, doxorubicin and mitoxantrone treatments was monitored and evaluated either by paired comparison with relevant untreated control and using multivariate classification of treated and untreated samples. With the main focus on early time intervals when the influence of apoptosis is minimized, we found significantly different levels of proteins, which corresponded to 1%-2% of the total amount of protein spots detected. According to Gene Ontology classification of biological processes, the highest representation of identified proteins for all three drugs belong to metabolic processes of proteins and nucleic acids and cellular processes, mainly cytoskeleton organisation and ubiquitin-proteasome pathway.

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is an iatrogenic complication and potentially life-threatening condition resulting from excessive ovarian stimulation during assisted reproductive technologies. Our aim was to identify candidate proteins in follicular fluid (FF) using various proteomic approaches which may help to identify patients at risk of OHSS. We analysed the proteome alterations in FF from patients suffering from severe forms of OHSS (OHSS+) compared with a control group of women without or with only mild signs of OHSS (OHSS-).

Using PCR and inverse PCR techniques we obtained a 4,498 bp nucleotide sequence FN424076 encompassing the complete coding sequence of the porcine insulin receptor substrate 4 (IRS4) gene and its proximal promoter. The 1,269 amino acid porcine protein deduced from the nucleotide sequence shares 92% identity with the human IRS4 and possesses the same domains and the same number of tyrosine phosphorylation motifs as the human protein. We detected substitution FN424076:g.

Resistance to anti-cancer drugs is a well recognized problem and very often it is responsible for failure of the cancer treatment. In this study, the proteome alterations associated with the development of acquired resistance to cyclin-depedent kinases inhibitor bohemine, a promising anti-cancer drug, were analyzed with the primary aim of identifying potential targets of resistance within the cell that could pave a way to selective elimination of specific resistant cell types. A model of parental susceptible CEM T-lymphoblastic leukemia cells and its resistant counterpart CEM-BOH was used and advanced 2-D liquid chromatography was applied to fractionate cellular proteins.

The occurrence and species distribution of bifidobacteria in the digestive tract of important representatives of social insects such as ants, bees, wasps and bumblebees as well as the incidence of bifidobacteria in fecal samples of several species of vertebrates represented mainly by reptiles was assigned by culture-independent method based on DGGE and real time PCR. Bifidobacteria were present in the gut of most social insects--honey bees, wasps, cockroaches and bumblebees, except for ants. In honey bees, where the counts of bifidobacteria ranged from 2 to 8% of the total bacteria, the most common species seemed to be Bifidobacterium indicum.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is fraught with problems and currently proteomics approaches are being tried out to examine the microenvironment of the follicle in order to assess biological and immunological parameters that may affect its development. Additionally, better understanding of reproductive process may help increase IVF birth rate per embryo transfer and at the same time avoid spontaneous miscarriages or life threatening conditions such as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. The primary aim of this study was to search for specific differences in protein composition of human follicular fluid (HFF) and plasma in order to identify proteins that accumulate or are absent in HFF.
