Small rodents can cause problems on farms such as infrastructure damage, crop losses or pathogen transfer. The latter threatens humans and livestock alike. Frequent contacts between wild rodents and livestock favour pathogen transfer and it is therefore important to understand the movement patterns of small mammals in order to develop strategies to prevent damage and health issues.

Temporal ablation of the ciliary protein IFT88 alters normal brainwave patterns.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Biomedical Sciences, College of Life Sciences and Agriculture, University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH, 03824, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The primary cilium is a crucial organelle involved in various signaling pathways, and its dysfunction is linked to conditions like Bardet-Biedl syndrome, Alzheimer's, and autism, all of which can lead to cognitive impairment.
  • Researchers studied the effects of temporarily disabling the IFT88 gene, vital for cilia formation, in adult mice to understand cilia's role in brain activity.
  • The findings showed that mice lacking functional cilia had significant learning deficits and abnormal brainwave patterns, emphasizing the importance of primary cilia for proper neural function and memory in adults.

Unlabelled: Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) remains a major threat to animal health and causes substantial economic losses worldwide. The nonstructural protein 11 (NSP11) of the causative agent, PRRS virus (PRRSV), contains a highly conserved nidoviral uridylate-specific endoribonuclease (NendoU) domain essential for viral replication and immune evasion. Targeting NSP11 offers a novel approach to antiviral intervention.

To prevent H9N2 avian influenza virus (AIV) and Avian metapneumonovirus/C (aMPV/C) infections, we constructed recombinant aMPV/C viruses expressing the HA protein of H9N2 AIV. In addition, EGFP was inserted into the intermediate non-coding region of P-M protein in the aMPV/C genome using a reverse genetic system. The conditions for rescuing the recombinant virus were enhanced followed by insertion of the H9N2 AIV HA gene into the same location in the aMPV/C.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Understanding the role of Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1) is essential for improving milk production in mammals, as it impacts mammary epithelial cell function during both pregnancy and lactation.
  • YAP1 is highly expressed in the mammary glands of various species, especially in the alveoli during gestation and lactation, and its inhibition negatively affects milk yield and mammary gland structure in mice.
  • Through its regulation of cellular processes, YAP1 interacts with hormones like Prolactin to enhance cell growth and milk components, while being inhibited by Melatonin, highlighting its critical role in lactation.

Grazing increases the complexity of networks and ecological stochastic processes of mycorrhizal fungi.

J Environ Manage

January 2025

Department of Grassland Science, College of Grassland Science & Technology, Sichuan Agricultural University, No.211 Huimin Road, Wenjiang District, Chengdu, 611130, China.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) form extensive symbiotic relationships with plants, which are critical for plant-driven biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem functions. Grazing and mowing, which are common grassland utilization patterns globally, significantly alter plant community characteristics as well as soil nutrients and structure, thereby potentially influencing AMF communities. However, the effects of these grassland managements on AMF community structure and ecological processes remain unclear.

This study aimed to investigate the molecular mechanisms of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) in apoptosis and meat tenderization during postmortem aging. Yak longissimus dorsi muscle was incubated with N-acetylcysteine (NAC), 4-phenylbutyric acid (4-PBA) and NAC + 4-PBA, respectively, and stored at 4 °C for 0 h, 12 h, 24 h, 72 h, 120 h and 168 h. The results showed that NAC and 4-PBA treatments significantly reduced ROS content and endoplasmic reticulum stress levels.

The gender and age perspectives of allostatic load.

Front Med (Lausanne)

December 2024

Department of Family Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, Osijek, Croatia.

The role of chronic stress in the development of chronic diseases, especially multimorbidity, through the pathways of increasing allostatic load, and finally, allostatic overload (the state when a compensatory mechanism is likely to fail) is being emphasized. However, allostatic load is a dynamic measure that changes depending on sex, gender, age, level and type of stress, experience of a stressful situation, and coping behaviors. Many other factors such as race, ethnicity, working environment, lifestyle, and circadian rhythm of sleep are also important.

Studies in humans and rodents show exercise in pregnancy can modulate maternal blood pressure, vascular volume, and placental efficiency, but whether exercise affects early uteroplacental vascular adaptations is unknown. To investigate this, CBA/J female mice mated with BALB/c males to generate healthy uncomplicated pregnancies (BALB/c-mated) or mated with DBA/2J males to generate abortion-prone pregnancies (DBA/2J-mated), were subjected to treadmill exercise (5 days/week, 10 m/min, 30 min/day for 6 weeks before and throughout pregnancy), or remained sedentary. In uncomplicated pregnancies, exercise caused symmetric fetal growth restriction in fetuses evidenced by reductions in fetal weight, crown-to-rump length, abdominal girth and biparietal diameter.
