Genetic diversity of Colorado potato beetle in a natural population from Fastovskii rayon, Kiev oblast was estimated using RAPD. The level of polymorphism for RAPD markers was far higher in the spring generation than in the sample obtained from the same locality in summer of the preceding year. The frequency of individual RAPD markers was found to differ in males and females of potato beetle.

Four decanucleotide primers were chosen to detect polymorphism for randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) in the populations of Colorado potato beetle. The variability of RAPD patterns was studied in three oblasts (Kiev, Moscow and Kurgan) that are geographically distant and considerably differ in ecological and climatic conditions affecting the development of this beetle: Kiev, Moscow, and Kurgan oblasts. A high level of intrapopulation polymorphism exceeding interpopulation differences was revealed.

The relative ozone sensitivities of 25 German native herbaceous plant species, representative of arable field margins or disturbed habitats, were examined over three consecutive growing seasons. Plants were grown from seed, potted into natural soils and exposed in open-top chambers for the entire season to different ozone-exposure regimes covering a range of concentrations from <5 to 48 ppb (seasonal 8 h daily mean). The assessment of ozone effects was carried out by recording the first day of visible symptom appearance and the percentage of injured leaves at the end of vegetative growth.

The electrophoretic mobility of seven erythrocyte enzymes and spectra of fragments amplified by RAPD-PCR with primers UBC-85 and UBC-126 were comparatively analyzed in domestic horse and Przewalski's horse. All tested genetic markers were classified into two groups differing in their involvement in differentiation of the two closely related horse species. Markers from different groups differed neither in their type (a polymorphic protein or an amplification product) nor in their biochemical role (for enzymes).
