Due to recent interest in the potential of probiotics as health promoters and the impact of health and environmental concerns on eating habits, non-dairy probiotic food products are required. This study aimed to evaluate the viability of different probiotic microorganisms in peach and grape juice (PGJ) with or without the prebiotic inulin and their antimicrobial activity against the foodborne pathogen and the juice spoilage microorganism . Firstly, the viability of seven probiotic strains was studied in PGJ with an initial concentration of 10 CFU/mL for 21 days at 4 °C and for 3 days at 37 °C.

Production of agricultural biofuels is expected to rise due to increasing climate change mitigation ambitions. Policy interventions promoting targeted bioenergy solutions can be motivated by the large environmental externalities present in agricultural systems and the local context of biomass production co-benefits. Introducing energy crops in crop rotations in arable land with depleted Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) levels offers the potential to increase SOC stocks and future crop yields as a step towards more sustainable agricultural systems.

Spirolides (SPXs), gymnodimines (GYMs), and pinnatoxins (PnTXs) have been detected in shellfish from the northwestern Mediterranean coast of Spain. Several samples of bivalves were collected from Fangar Bay and Alfacs Bay in Catalonia over a period of over 7 years (from 2015 to 2021). Aquaporin-mediated oocyte hydration is a developmentally regulated adaptive mechanism that co-occurs with meiosis resumption in marine teleosts. It provides the early embryos with vital water until osmoregulatory systems develop, and in the majority of marine teleosts causes their eggs to float. Recent studies have shown that the subdomains of two water channels (Aqp1ab1 and Aqp1ab2) encoded in a teleost-specific aquaporin-1 cluster (TSA1C) co-evolved with duplicated Ywhaz-like (14-3-3ζ-like) binding proteins to differentially control their membrane trafficking for maximal egg hydration.

Weaned piglets, being immature, demand careful handling to mitigate post-weaning stress in order to avoid immunosuppression and the use of antimicrobials to palliate the effects of disease outbreaks due to poor management. The objective of this work is to design a quick scan calculator or multi-criteria evaluation model of management for weaned piglets, founded on 10 critical indices covering post-weaning management aspects based on hygienic measures and management of facilities and animals. These include pre-weaning handling, batch management, biosecurity, water management, feed management, health program, stockmen training, temperature, ventilation, and floor conditions and density to relate handling and hygiene practices with farm performance and the consumption of veterinary medication.

The oxidative stability of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) depends on its composition, primarily, phenolic compounds and tocopherols, which are strong antioxidants, but also carotenoids, squalene, and fatty acids contribute. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of malaxation conditions and olive storage on the composition of 'Corbella' EVOO produced in an industrial mill to determine which parameters and compounds could give more stable oils. Although a longer malaxation time at a higher temperature and olive storage had a negative effect on the content of -tocopherol, squalene, flavonoids, lignans, phenolic acids, and phenolic alcohols, the antioxidant capacity and oxidative stability of the oil were improved because of an increase in the concentration of oleacein (56-71%) and oleocanthal (42-67%).

Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) quality and composition are mainly affected by genetics, agronomic and technological parameters, undergoing further modifications during storage. In this work, a chemometric approach was applied to study the impact of olive maturity, malaxation time/temperature, and oil storage on the quality and compositional parameters of Arbequina EVOO (basic quality indices, volatile and sensory profiles, contents in phenolic compounds, squalene, vitamin E and fatty acids). Storage emerged as the most influential factor, followed by olive maturity and malaxation temperature, while malaxation time had almost no effect.

Meat from silvopastoral systems, due to its provision of numerous ecosystem services such as wildfire risk reduction in Mediterranean forests, can address societal growing demands for meat produced with lower environmental impacts. Differentiation of meat from these systems may contribute to their economic sustainability and hence to reverse their decline in the Mediterranean.
