Deformable superstructures are man-made materials with large deformation properties that surpass those of natural materials. However, traditional deformable superstructures generally use conventional materials as substrates, limiting their applications in multi-mode reconfigurable robots and space-expandable morphing structures. In this work, amine-acrylate-based liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are used as deformable superstructures substrate to provide high driving stress and strain.

Although various bioinspired devices designed to increase absorption and minimize reflection have been developed, there is no research focusing on wideband electromagnetic (EM) absorbers at 75-110 GHz, which is not conducive to the advancement of millimeter wave technology. Herein, inspired by the ultrablack butterfly scale nanostructure, an innovative flexible multistage honeycomb structure absorber (FMHSA) of carbonyl iron (CIP)/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/flexible photopolymer resin (FPR) composite is successfully prepared by digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. FMHSA exhibits excellent EM wave absorption performance with full band absorption at 75-110 GHz under different bending states.

Excellent energy-absorbing structures have been highly sought after in engineering applications to improve devices and personal safety. The ideal energy absorption mechanism should exhibit characteristics such as lightweight, high energy absorption capacity, and efficient reusability. To address this demand, a novel three-dimensional (3D) chiral lattice structure with compression-twist coupling deformation is fabricated by combining the left and right chiral units.

Owing to the melting and healing properties of thermoplastic resin, additive manufacturing or 3D printing is considered one of the most promising technologies for fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites. However, manufacturing defects are still the main concern, which significantly limits the application of 3D-printed composite structures. To gain an insight into the effects of different processing parameters on the typical manufacturing defects, a micro-scale analysis was carried out via Micro-CT technology on the 3D-printed continuous carbon fiber-reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) composite specimens.

Rubber composites are hyperelastic materials with obvious stress-softening effects during the cyclic loading-unloading process. In previous studies, it is hard to obtain the stress responses of rubber composites at arbitrary loading-unloading orders directly. In this paper, a hyper-pseudoelastic model is developed to characterize the cyclic stress-softening effect of rubber composites with a fixed stretch amplitude at arbitrary loading-unloading order.

Damage localization methods for composite materials are a popular research topic at present. The time-difference-blind localization method and beamforming localization method are often individually utilized in the localization of the acoustic emission sources of composite materials. Based on the performances of the two methods, a joint localization method for the acoustic emission sources of composite materials is proposed in this paper.

Nearly half of the elements in the periodic table are extracted, refined, or plated using electrodeposition in high-temperature melts. However, operando observations and tuning of the electrodeposition process during realistic electrolysis operations are extremely difficult due to severe reaction conditions and complicated electrolytic cell, which makes the improvement of the process very blind and inefficient. Here, we developed a multipurpose operando high-temperature electrochemical instrument that combines operando Raman microspectroscopy analysis, optical microscopy imaging, and a tunable magnetic field.

Herein, a typical natural system, the durian peel, has been systematically characterized and studied, showing a solid-liquid dual-phase cellular structure. A bioinspired design of flexible impact-resistant composites is then proposed by combining 3D lattices and shear thickening fluids.

This study uses experimental methods, theoretical research, and numerical prediction to study the dynamic mechanical properties and damage evolution of CFRP laminates at ultra-low temperatures. Based on the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) device, we set up an ultra-low temperature dynamic experimental platform with a synchronous observation function; the dynamic mechanical properties of laminates were tested, and the damage evolution process was observed. The experimental results are as follows: The compression strength and modulus increase linearly with the increase in strain rate and show a quadratic function trend of increasing and then decreasing with the decrease in temperature.
