The pathogenesis of insomnia is related to the dysfunction of the thalamus. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) has proved to be effective in treating insomnia. However, whether taVNS alleviates insomnia through modulating thalamus-related functional connectivity remains unclear.

Objective: To investiage the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) at a single acupoint of Shenmen (HT7), Baihui (GV20), Sanyinjiao (SP6) and at combined acupoints of Shenmen (HT7) and Baihui (GV20) and Sanyinjiao (SP6) on the PKA/CREB and BDNF/TrkB signaling, as well as neuroapoptosis and neurogenesis in hippocampus and elucidate the underlying mechanism of single and combined acupoints on ameliorating spatial learning and memory deficits in a rat model of primary insomnia.

Methods: Primary insomnia was modeled by intraperitoneal injection of para-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA) once daily for 2 d. EA was applied at Shenmen (HT7), Baihui (GV20), Sanyinjiao (SP6), or Shenmen (HT7) + Baihui (GV20) + Sanyinjiao (SP6) (combined) for 30 min daily for 4 d.

Institute of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Beijing 100700, China.

From the perspective of academic history, the paper reviews systematically the background and evolution of the understanding of "Fengshi (GB 31) for treating wind disorders". In the ancient literature, there are no direct relevant statement for the indication of Fengshi (GB 31) associated with "wind", and the consensus on "Fengshi for treating wind disorders" has not been made yet. Under the influence of acupoint theory in recent era and the syndrome differentiation for acupuncture treatment in modern time, this statement becomes a conventional understanding and acceptable gradually.

Electroacupuncture-modulated extracellular ATP levels in prefrontal cortex ameliorated depressive-like behavior of maternal separation rats.

Behav Brain Res

August 2023

South China Research Center for Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Medical College of Acu-Moxi and Rehabilitation, Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Guangzhou, China; Institute of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Jinan, China; Center for Brain Science and Brain-Inspired Intelligence, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Guangzhou, China. Electronic address:

Maternal separation (MS) is a type of early-life stress that has been linked to neuropsychiatric disorders, especially depression. Increasing evidence indicates that the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) level in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) is involved in the pathophysiology of depression. To investigate the potential relationship between ATP in PFC and antidepressant effects of electroacupuncture (EA) treatment, we assessed genes involved in ATP biosynthesis as well as the extracellular ATP levels in a rat model exposed to neonatal MS.

Background In mainland China, patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) have approximately an 40% prevalence of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV). This disease leads to recurrent retinal pigment epithelium detachment (PED), extensive subretinal or vitreous hemorrhages, and severe vision loss. China has introduced various treatment modalities in the past years and gained comprehensive experience in treating PCV.

Characteristic Features of Deep Brain Lymphatic Vessels and Their Regulation by Chronic Stress.

Research (Wash D C)

April 2023

State Key Laboratory of Medical Neurobiology and MOE Frontiers Center for Brain Science, Institutes of Brain Science, Fudan University, Shanghai 200032, China.

Studies have demonstrated that a functional network of meningeal lymphatic vessels exists in the brain. However, it is unknown whether lymphatic vessels could also extend deep into the brain parenchyma and whether the vessels could be regulated by stressful life events. We used tissue clearing techniques, immunostaining, light-sheet whole-brain imaging, confocal imaging in thick brain sections and flow cytometry to demonstrate the existence of lymphatic vessels deep in the brain parenchyma.

Research Institute of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Shandong University of TCM, Jinan 250255, China; China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Beijing 100700.

The process of acupuncture internationalization includes two basic stages: pre-internationalization period and post-internationalization period. The former is mainly characterized by unidirectional export led by China, while other countries and regions are mainly learning and absorbing. The latter is manifested by the localization transformation and development of acupuncture in foreign countries, which brings severe challenges to traditional Chinese acupuncture.
