This paper presents a novel method for finding features in the analysis of variable distributions stemming from time series. We apply the methodology to the case of submitted and accepted papers in peer-reviewed journals. Purpose: Disease or a specific condition may cause alteration of human transferrin (hTf) glycosylation pattern. A specific analytical platform, lectin-based protein microarray, is designed and optimized for the investigation of hTf glycans, attached to the protein core in their native form.

Background: Influence of A736V and (C282Y and H63D) polymorphisms on serum hepcidin-25 levels and iron status parameters in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients stratified according to gender has not been previously investigated. In addition, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the parameters to separate iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) from anemia of chronic disease.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), a common form of thyroid malignancy, displays significant variations in clinical features and outcome. The malignant transformation of the thyroid is driven by altered expression of many matrix-modulating enzymes, including matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9). A single nucleotide polymorphism in its promotor (-1562 C/T) is suspected to cause overexpression of MMP-9, which in turn contributes to development of a tumour unfavourable phenotype.

Infection with parasites from the Trichinella genus occurs in many vertebrates but disease only occurs in humans (trichinellosis). Humans are infected after the consumption of raw or undercooked meat from infected wild or domestic animals (usually swine or horses). Using the monoclonal antibody (mAb) 7C2C5, specific for an epitope unique to the muscle larvae of the genus Trichinella, we have developed a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (c-ELISA) that enables the rapid detection of Trichinella-specific antibodies in sera originating from two different host species (human, swine) infected with either Trichinella spiralis or Trichinella britovi.

Due to wide applicative potential of peroxidases (POXs), the search for novel sources and forms, possibly with better characteristics and performances, is justified. In this study, POXs from Miscanthus x giganteus rhizomes grown in chernozem-like soil and mine tailings were examined. Although membrane proteins (MPs) play crucial roles in physiological processes, information on them are insufficient, mostly due to their peculiar nature and surrounding which demand specific procedures for their extraction (using detergents) and analysis. A pallet of ten detergents and β-cyclodextrin was employed to investigate their efficiency in extracting total placental MPs, glycoproteins and insulin-like growth factor receptors (IR/IGF1R/IGF2R). Cell-based tolerogenic therapy is a promising approach for the treatment of autoimmune diseases and transplant rejection. Regulatory T cells and tolerogenic dendritic cells have been particularly explored in the treatment of various autoimmune disorders in experimental models of disease. Fibrinogen and insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1) are tightly connected to metabolic changes and complications in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), and since they mutually interact to form complexes in plasma, we investigated whether and to what extent IGFBP-1/fibrinogen complexes change due to glyco-oxidative processes in DM and whether they participate in fibrin clot formation. These complexes were determined by immunoblotting in plasma samples from healthy adults and patients with DM type 2 (DM2). The influence of glyco-oxidation in vitro on the complexes was also investigated.

Excretory-secretory antigens of Trichinella spiralis muscle larvae can induce the semi-matured status of rat dendritic cells. This may at least partly be the consequence of transient activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2 (ERK1/2). Here we investigated the potential of several components of excretory-secretory antigens (native fraction containing 45, 49 and 53kDa proteins and recombinant Tsp53, representing one of the constituents of this fraction) to demonstrate previously observed effects of excretory-secretory antigens on dendritic cells in vitro, characterised by establishment of a particular phenotype (very low MHC II expression, moderate CD86 expression and significant ICAM-1 expression) and functional properties (low production of pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-12p70, and high production of IL-10 and TGF-β).

Cellular therapies with tolerogenic antigen-presenting cells (tolAPC) show great promise for the treatment of autoimmune diseases and for the prevention of destructive immune responses after transplantation. The methodologies for generating tolAPC vary greatly between different laboratories, making it difficult to compare data from different studies; thus constituting a major hurdle for the development of standardised tolAPC therapeutic products. Here we describe an initiative by members of the tolAPC field to generate a minimum information model for tolAPC (MITAP), providing a reporting framework that will make differences and similarities between tolAPC products transparent.

Fibrinogen is a plasma glycoprotein and one of the principle participants in blood coagulation.
