The purpose of this study was to gain knowledge about the micromorphology of the porcine common carotid artery (CCA) during the period of growth over the bodyweight range of 10-40 kg. CCA samples from German landrace pigs (DL) aged either 2 or 3 months (DL-2 and DL-3) were compared with samples from Göttingen minipigs (GM) aged either 18 or 40 months (GM-18 and GM-40) using transmitted light (phase-contrast mode) and transmission electron microscopy. The GM-18, GM-40 and the DL-3 groups had typical muscular artery histological characteristics.

Ciliated bronchial epithelium 1 (CBE1) is a microtubule-associated protein localized to the manchette and developing flagellum during spermiogenesis and is associated with sperm maturation arrest in humans. It was hypothesized that CBE1 functions in microtubule-mediated transport mechanisms and sperm tail formation. Sulfated steroid hormones are commonly considered to be biologically inactive metabolites, but may be reactivated by the steroid sulfatase into biologically active free steroids, thereby having regulatory function via nuclear androgen and estrogen receptors which are widespread in the testis. However, a prerequisite for this mode of action would be a carrier-mediated import of the hydrophilic steroid sulfate molecules into specific target cells in reproductive tissues such as the testis. In the present study we detected predominant expression of the Sodium-dependent Organic Anion Transporter (SOAT), the Organic Anion Transporting Polypeptide 6A1, and the Organic Solute Carrier Partner 1 in human testis biopsies.

The bovine placenta is characterized by a limited invasion of trophoblast giant cells (TGC). In contrast to mononuclear trophoblast cells (MTC), TGC are non-polarized cells, which migrate and fuse with single uterine epithelial cells throughout gestation. Fibroblast growth factors (FGF) were shown to be associated with the migratory activity of cells, cell differentiation and angiogenesis, and due to its localization in trophoblast cells were proposed as important regulating factors in hemochorial placentae of rodents and humans, and the (syn)epitheliochorial placenta of pig and sheep.

During spermiogenesis, histones are replaced by transition proteins, which in turn are replaced by protamines. The TNP1 gene-encoding TP1 (transition protein 1) protein contains a cAMP-responsive element (CRE) that serves as binding site for the CRE modulator (CREM). To gain further insight into the complex regulation of nucleoprotein exchanges in haploid spermatids and its potential role for spermatogenic impairment, we studied the gene expression of testis-specific histone H1t, CREM, and TNP1 in testicular biopsies from men with normal spermatogenesis (n = 20) and with round spermatid maturation arrest (n = 16).
