Background: Factors associated with severe COVID-19 infection have been identified; however, the impact of infection on longer-term outcomes is unclear. The objective of this study was to examine the impact of COVID-19 infection on the trajectory of lung function and nutritional status in people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF).
Methods: This is a retrospective global cohort study of pwCF who had confirmed COVID-19 infection diagnosed between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021.

Bactericidal permeability-increasing protein (BPI) is a multifunctional cationic protein produced by neutrophils, eosinophils, fibroblasts, and macrophages with antibacterial anti-inflammatory properties. In the context of Gram-negative infection, BPI kills bacteria, neutralizes the endotoxic activity of lipopolysaccharides (LPSs), and, thus, avoids immune hyperactivation. Interestingly, BPI increases in patients with Gram-positive meningitis, interacts with lipopeptides and lipoteichoic acids of Gram-positive bacteria, and significantly enhances the immune response in peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Objectives: To elaborate the utility of multiplex quantitative polymerase chain reaction (multiplex qPCR) for the accurate diagnosis of severe respiratory tract infections (RTIs) in hospitalized children.
Methods: In two separate periods during 2022, 76 respiratory specimens (combined throat/nasopharyngeal swabs) were submitted for multiplex qPCR regarding 26 respiratory pathogens. The specimens were obtained from children with severe RTIs hospitalized in the Institute for Respiratory Diseases in Children, Skopje.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma are the most common chronic airway diseases and are characterized by chronic airway inflammation and airflow limitation. Japanese patients with COPD or asthma have characteristics different from those of Westerners. Therefore, understanding the characteristics and clinical course of Japanese patients with COPD and those with asthma, particularly severe asthma, is critical for their management and appropriate treatment.

The mechanism of high transfer coefficients of the lungs for carbon monoxide (Kco) in non-smokers with asthma is explained by the redistribution of blood flow to the area with preserved ventilation, to match the ventilation perfusion. Background: The aim of this study was to explore the combined efficacy ofeffective-component compatibility of Bufei Yishen formula III (ECC-BYF III) and exercise rehabilitation (ER) in inhibiting airway mucus hypersecretion in a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) rat model.
Methods: A total of 48 SD rats were divided into control, model, acetylcysteine (NAC), ECC-BYF III, ER, and ECC-BYF III + ER groups (n=8). COPD rats were exposed to cigarette smoke and bacteria for 8 weeks and administered various treatments over the next eight weeks.
