Exploring the Relationship Among Financial Hardship, Anxiety, and Depression in Patients With Cancer: A Longitudinal Study.

Purpose: Financial hardship (FH) is a complex issue in cancer care, affecting material conditions, well-being, and coping behaviors. This study aimed to longitudinally examine FH, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and their associations while incorporating social determinants of health and health care cost covariates in a sample of patients diagnosed with cancer.

Methods: This prospective, longitudinal cohort study analyzed data from 2,305 participants from the Northwestern University Improving the Management of Symptoms during and following Cancer Treatment trial.

C-reactive protein across pregnancy in individuals exposed to childhood maltreatment: The role of psychological and physical sequelae of maltreatment.

Background: Childhood maltreatment (CM) has long-term consequences for the regulation of stress biology which are particularly pronounced when mental and physical health sequelae have manifested. C-reactive protein (CRP) has been shown to be elevated in the non-pregnant state in association with CM as well as in the setting of CM-associated mental and physical health sequelae. In pregnancy, however, the association between CM and CRP is less clear.

Complication Timing, Failure to Rescue, and Readmission After Inpatient Pediatric Surgery.

Background: Complications are associated with postoperative mortality and readmission. However, the timing of complications relative to discharge and the extent to which timing is associated with failure to rescue (FTR) and readmission after pediatric surgery is unknown. Our goal was to describe the timing of complications relative to discharge after inpatient pediatric surgery and determine the association between complication timing, FTR, and unplanned readmission.

Sustained improvements in patient-reported outcomes after long-term sutimlimab in patients with cold agglutinin disease: results from the CADENZA study open-label extension.

Background: Cold agglutinin disease (CAD) is a rare subtype of autoimmune haemolytic anaemia characterised by classical complement pathway-mediated haemolysis, fatigue, and poor quality of life (QoL). Sutimlimab, a C1s inhibitor, rapidly halted haemolysis, and improved patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in patients with CAD in two phase 3 trials (CARDINAL and CADENZA). Here we report PROs from the CADENZA open-label extension (Part B).

Phenotypes of Patients with Intracerebral Hemorrhage, Complications, and Outcomes.

Background: The objective of this study was to define clinically meaningful phenotypes of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) using machine learning.

Methods: We used patient data from two US medical centers and the Antihypertensive Treatment of Acute Cerebral Hemorrhage-II clinical trial. We used k-prototypes to partition patient admission data.

Implementing a real-time patient experience feedback in inpatient rehabilitation: Process evaluation informed by the normalisation process theory.

Purpose: Near real-time patient experience feedback (NRTPEF) can enable a patient-centric, immediate service recovery but has not been widely used in inpatient rehabilitation. We 1) assess the utility, feasibility, and acceptability of implementing a new NRTPEF, perceived by patients and providers; and 2) understand how the NRTPEF became embedded into routine provider practices.

Materials And Methods: Mixed methods process evaluation of the 8-month implementation of an innovative NRTPEF in an inpatient rehabilitation unit, using interviews and focus groups with all the service-unit leaders and interviews with a randomised sample of patients.

Shared decision-making and disease management in advanced cancer and chronic kidney disease using patient-reported outcome dashboards.

Objectives: To assess the use of a co-designed patient-reported outcome (PRO) clinical dashboard and estimate its impact on shared decision-making (SDM) and symptomatology in adults with advanced cancer or chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Materials And Methods: We developed a clinical PRO dashboard within the Northwestern Medicine Patient-Reported Outcomes system, enhanced through co-design involving 20 diverse constituents. Using a single-group, pretest-posttest design, we evaluated the dashboard's use among patients with advanced cancer or CKD between June 2020 and January 2022.

Awareness and Application of United States Food Allergy Prevention Guidelines Among Pediatricians and Other Clinicians.

Objective: To characterize the awareness of, adherence to, and barriers to the 2017 National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) peanut allergy prevention guidelines among the pediatrics health care workforce.

Study Design: Pediatricians, family physicians, advanced practice providers (APPs), and dermatologists who provide care for infants were solicited for a population-based online survey, administered from June 6, 2022, through July 3, 2022. The survey collected information about NIAID guideline awareness, implementation, and barriers as well as concerns related to the guidelines.

What Constitutes Adequate Control of High Blood Pressure? Current Considerations.

An estimated 45% of adult Americans currently have high blood pressure (HBP). Effective blood pressure (BP) control is essential for preventing major adverse events from cardiovascular and other vascular-related diseases, such as chronic kidney disease, stroke and dementia. A large and growing number of medical professional societies, health care organizations, and governmental agencies have now endorsed a clinical practice guideline-based target for adequate control of HBP to a systolic BP of less than 130 mm Hg.

Effects and Thresholds of Young to Midlife Vascular Risks on Brain Health.

Background: Vascular risk factors, particularly hypertension, are important contributors to accelerated brain aging. We sought to quantify vascular risk factor risks over adulthood and assess the empirical evidence for risk thresholds.

Methods: We used SBP (systolic blood pressure) and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, and body mass index measurements collected from participants in the CARDIA study (Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults) at 2- to 5-year intervals through year 30.

Introduction: The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare has exposed the unmet need for growing a multidisciplinary workforce that can collaborate effectively in the learning health systems. Global availability and uptake of psychological services for adults, caregivers and children with food allergy.

Background: Food allergy (FA) is associated with poor health-related quality of life and high levels of psychological distress. Psychological support is extremely important but not always available. As part of the Global Access to Psychological Services for Food Allergy (GAPS) study, we aimed to assess psychological distress and service use among adults, caregivers and children with FA in a global survey.

Managing medications among individuals with mild cognitive impairment and dementia: Patient-caregiver perspectives.

Background: With changing cognitive abilities, individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia face challenges in successfully managing multidrug regimens. We sought to understand how individuals with MCI or dementia and their family caregivers manage multidrug regimens and better understand patient-to-caregiver transitions in medication management responsibilities.

Methods: We conducted qualitative interviews among patient-caregiver dyads.

Malnutrition in hospitalized adults in the United States, 2016-2019.

Background: Malnutrition in hospitalized patients is associated increased length of stay, cost, readmission, and death. No recent studies have examined trends in prevalence or outcomes of hospitalized patients with a diagnosis of malnutrition.

Objectives: To study the prevalence of malnutrition diagnostic codes and associated hospital outcomes in the United States between 2016 and 2019.

Understanding the burden of food allergy among urban and rural school children from north India.

Background: There is paucity of reliable epidemiological data regarding the burden of food allergy in most developing countries, including India.

Objective: To provide current estimates of the prevalence and distribution of food allergy among urban and rural school children aged 6-14 years in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) of Khekra in India.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2022 to February 2023 to enroll school children, 6-14 years, from select urban and rural schools in Delhi and NCR.

The Community Health Advocacy Initiative: A Longitudinal Experiential Curriculum in Community Engagement for Preclerkship Medical Students.

Introduction: Community partnership is a key strategy for addressing the social determinants of health and achieving health equity. There are few examples of curricula for undergraduate medical education that teach all, rather than self-selected, medical students to collaborate with community members to improve health. We describe the design and implementation of the Community Health Advocacy Initiative (CHAI) curriculum, a new yearlong educational program for medical students at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine.

US black women's pregnancy communication networks: A qualitative network analysis.

The ongoing Black maternal health crisis necessitates a closer examination of how Black women in the United States utilize communication to mitigate the dangers racism poses for pregnancy, delivery and the postpartum period. Previous studies have highlighted the importance of supportive networks to Black women's wellbeing during pregnancy. However, few studies utilize a qualitative network approach to explore communication about pregnancy and related risks within a social network.

Near real-time patient experience feedback with data relay to providers: a systematic review of its effectiveness.

Near Real-Time Feedback (NRTF) on the patient's experience with care, coupled with data relay to providers, can inform quality-of-care improvements, including at the point of care. The objective is to systematically review contemporary literature on the impact of the use of NRTF and data relay to providers on standardized patient experience measures. Six scientific databases and five specialty journals were searched supplemented by snowballing search strategies, according to the registered study protocol.

The role of pediatricians in the diagnosis and management of IgE-mediated food allergy: a review.

Importance: Food allergy can often cause a significant burden on patients, families, and healthcare systems. The complexity of food allergy management requires a multidisciplinary approach involving different types of healthcare providers, including allergists, dieticians, psychologists, nurses, family practitioners and, of particular relevance for this article, pediatric primary caretakers. Pediatricians may be the first-line healthcare providers for food allergy: strategies for management and guideline adherence have been highlighted.

Systematic review of contemporary interventions for improving discharge support and transitions of care from the patient experience perspective.

Aim: To synthesize the impact of improvement interventions related to care coordination, discharge support and care transitions on patient experience measures.

Method: Systematic review. Searches were completed in six scientific databases, five specialty journals, and through snowballing.

Implementation of a clinically integrated breastfeeding peer counselor program.

Objective: Reflecting disparities across the US, in 2015 publicly insured patients of the NorthShore Community Health Center (NSCHC) in Evanston, Illinois had lower breastfeeding rates than commercially insured patients. We used the Replicating Effective Programs framework to describe the design and implementation of a clinically-integrated breastfeeding peer counseling (ci-BPC) program to address these disparities.

Study Design: Patient focus groups and surveys informed program design, and a multidisciplinary clinical support team developed workflows that integrated the breastfeeding peer counselor (BPC) into the clinic and the postpartum unit.

Patient and clinician preferences for diabetes management among older adults with co-morbid HIV: A qualitative exploration.

Background: Older adults with HIV are at increased risk of developing certain chronic health conditions including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). As the number and complexity of conditions increases, so do treatment and health care needs. We explored patient and clinician preferences for HIV+T2DM care and perceived solutions to improving care.
