Lead is one of the non-essential metals that can become a serious environmental threat to the human population and wildlife causing various toxic impairments and pathologies. Waterfowl are especially sensitive to lead exposure as they stay in areas with a high risk of lead pollution due to hunting and fishing pressures. This study aims to determine recent blood lead levels in 45 live mute swans in the southern Baltic, in the Gulf of Gdańsk and to test the hypothesis that birds with elevated lead levels have a higher physiological stress.

GWAS on longitudinal growth traits reveals different genetic factors influencing infant, child, and adult BMI.

Sci Adv

September 2019

Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, MRC-PHE Centre for Environment and Health, School of Public Health, Imperial College London, London, UK.

Article Synopsis
  • Early childhood growth patterns are linked to health in adulthood, but the genetic influences and developmental stages remain unclear.
  • This study uses genome-wide association studies and various analyses to explore how genetics of early growth relate to adult health, finding significant connections between child and adult body mass index (BMI).
  • The research also reveals distinct genetic factors influencing peak BMI during infancy, implying different strategies may be needed for addressing childhood obesity in prevention efforts.

Visible-light unmasking of heterocyclic quinone methide radicals from alkoxyamines.

Chem Commun (Camb)

December 2019

School of Chemistry, National University of Ireland Galway, University Road, Galway, H91 TK33, Ireland and Department of Pharmacy, School of Life Sciences, Pharmacy and Chemistry, Kingston University, Penrhyn Road, Kingston upon Thames, KT1 2EE, UK.

In nature, the unmasking of heterocyclic quinones to form stabilized quinone methide radicals is achieved using reductases (bioreduction). Herein, an alternative controllable room-temperature, visible-light activated protocol using alkoxyamines and bis-alkoxyamines is provided. Selective synthetic modification of the bis-alkoxyamine, allowed chromophore deactivation to give one labile alkoxyamine moiety.

Background: UGT2B7 was recently acknowledged as a new critical enzyme involved in biotransformation of a variety of carcinogens, whose function was reported to be significantly associated with its encoding gene (UGT2B7) polymorphisms. However, results regarding the associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of UGT2B7 and cancer risk still remained controversial. Therefore, a meta-analysis was conducted to further elucidate the role of UGT2B7 SNPs on cancer susceptibilities.
