Hypoparathyroidism (HPT) is one of the most frequentand severe complications of thyroid surgery. It is caused by intraoperative damage, devascularization or accidental removal of the parathyroid glands (PTGs). The incidence of postoperative HPT is directly proportional to surgery extent and surgeon's experience.

Neratinib after trastuzumab-based adjuvant therapy in HER2-positive breast cancer (ExteNET): 5-year analysis of a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trial.

Background: ExteNET showed that 1 year of neratinib, an irreversible pan-HER tyrosine kinase inhibitor, significantly improves 2-year invasive disease-free survival after trastuzumab-based adjuvant therapy in women with HER2-positive breast cancer. We report updated efficacy outcomes from a protocol-defined 5-year follow-up sensitivity analysis and long-term toxicity findings.

Methods: In this ongoing randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trial, eligible women aged 18 years or older (≥20 years in Japan) with stage 1-3c (modified to stage 2-3c in February, 2010) operable breast cancer, who had completed neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy plus trastuzumab with no evidence of disease recurrence or metastatic disease at study entry.

Curative intent for unresectable advanced squamous cell esophageal cancer: Overall survival after chemoradiation.

Purpose: To analyse the overall survival (OS) of patients with locally advanced, unresectable esophageal cancer treated with chemoradiation (CRT) with or without surgery.

Methods: CRT was administered to 63 patients with locally advanced (T3-4, N0-1), initially unresectable squamous cell esophageal cancer. After the assessment of tumor response to treatment, medically fit patients converted to operable stage were subjected to surgery.

Assessment of ovarian function after chemotherapy in women with early and locally advanced breast cancer from Serbia.

Purpose: Among harmful effects of chemotherapy is the reduction of ovarian function. The aim was to determine the serum levels of FSH, LH, estradiol and AMH after chemotherapy followed by endocrine therapy in breast cancer patients.

Methods: The study included 40 premenopausal hormone receptor-positive breast cancer patients aged 33-50 years.

Effects of different preprocessing algorithms on the prognostic value of breast tumour microscopic images.

The purpose of this study was to improve the prognostic value of tumour histopathology image analysis methodology by image preprocessing. Key image qualities were modified including contrast, sharpness and brightness. The texture information was subsequently extracted from images of haematoxylin/eosin-stained tumour tissue sections by GLCM, monofractal and multifractal algorithms without any analytical limitation to predefined structures.

TIMP-3 mRNA expression levels positively correlates with levels of miR-21 in in situ BC and negatively in PR positive invasive BC.

Background: Breast carcinomas (BC) belong to a heterogeneous group of malignant diseases. Correct categorization of BC based on molecular biomarkers has a very important role in deciding the proper course of therapy for each patient. It has been already shown that the decrease of TIMP metalloproteinase inhibitor 3 (TIMP-3) together with overexpression of microRNA-21 (miR-21) might be involved in the process of BC invasion.

Durable complete remission of poor performance status metastatic lung adenocarcinoma patient treated with second-line erlotinib: a case report.

This paper presents a rare case of an elderly patient treated with erlotinib for disseminated lung adenocarcinoma with poor performance status (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status [PS]3). This treatment led to a long duration of complete remission according to Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors 1.1 - almost 7 years (81 months) of progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) of 10 years by March 2017.

Factors influencing time to seeking medical advice and onset of treatment in women who are diagnosed with breast cancer in Serbia.

Objective: Streamlining the diagnosis is a key factor in improving the treatment outcomes for breast cancer. The aim of this study was to determine factors influencing time to seeking medical advice and treatment onset in women who are diagnosed with breast cancer in Serbia.

Methods: The study was a multicenter, cross-sectional national survey, performed at 10 oncology centers in Serbia.

Targeted therapy and personalized medicine in hepatocellular carcinoma: drug resistance, mechanisms, and treatment strategies.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is characterized by a growing number of new cases diagnosed each year that is nearly equal to the number of deaths from this cancer. In a majority of the cases, HCC is associated with the underlying chronic liver disease, and it is diagnosed in advanced stage of disease when curative treatment options are not applicable. Sorafenib is a treatment of choice for patients with performance status 1 or 2 and/or macrovascular invasion or extrahepatic spread, and regorafenib is the only systemic treatment found to provide survival benefit in HCC patients progressing on sorafenib treatment.

The importance of miRNA signatures in disease screening, prognosis, and progression of different tumor types and subtypes is increasing. miRNA expression levels change depending on numerous factors.

Cytotoxic and Antimicrobial Activities of Cantharellus cibarius Fr. (Cantarellaceae).

Antibacterial and cytotoxic activities of cyclohexane, dichloromethane, methanol, and aqueous extracts of Cantharellus cibarius were tested. Broth microdilution assay was performed against 10 bacterial strains (Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, Micrococcus luteus, Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus feacalis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella abony), with emphasis on Helicobacter pylori.

Vitamin D Deficiency and Associated Factors in Patients with Mental Disorders Treated in Routine Practice.

This research aimed to investigate factors associated with vitamin D deficiency and to provide data about its prevalence in patients suffering from different psychiatric illnesses. The study had a cross-sectional design and it included 220 patients of both genders, aged from 19-81 y, with a wide range of mental disorders (F00-F89), and treated in routine ambulatory and hospital practice. The researchers collected data from three sources: medical records, a study questionnaire and biochemical analysis of patients' serum samples (concentration of vitamin D measured as 25(OH)D, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and potassium).

Tumor response and patient outcome after preoperative radiotherapy in locally advanced non-inflammatory breast cancer patients.

Purpose: The purpose of this analysis was to assess the tumor response and long-term outcome in patients treated with preoperative radiotherapy (PRT) without systemic therapy.

Methods: Between 1997 and 2000, 134 patients with non-inflammatory locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) were treated with PRT. The tumor dose was 45 Gy in 15 fractions to the breast and to regional lymph nodes over 6 weeks.

A Survival Analysis with Identification of Prognostic Factors in a Series of 110 Patients with Newly Diagnosed Glioblastoma Before and After Introduction of the Stupp Regimen: A Single-Center Observational Study.

Background: Current treatment protocol for glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is based on maximal safe resection followed by the Stupp protocol. In Serbia, temozolomide was introduced as adjuvant therapy in 2011. The aims of this study were to confirm the safety and efficacy on overall and progression-free survival of the Stupp protocol and evaluate the influence of prognostic factors in one of the largest series of patients with GBM treated over a 2-year period.

Synthesis and in vitro antitumour activity of crassalactone D, its stereoisomers and novel cinnamic ester derivatives.

Naturally occurring styryl lactone, crassalactone D (1), unnatural 4-epi-crassalactone D (2), and the corresponding 7-epimers (3 and 4) have been synthesized starting from d-glucose. The key step of the synthesis is a new one-pot sequence that commenced with a Z-selective Wittig olefination of suitably functionalized sugar lactols with a stabilized ylide, (methoxycarbonylmethylene)-triphenylphosphorane, in dry methanol, to afford 1 or 3, in the mixtures with the corresponding 4-epimers (2 or 4, respectively). A number of 6-O-cinnamoyl derivatives of styryl lactones 1-4 have been prepared, bearing electron donating or electron withdrawing functionalities in the C-4 position of cinnamic acid residue.

Chemical composition, antiproliferative and antioxidant activity of differently processed ethanol extracts.

The content of phenolic compounds (TPC) and glucans, as well as the effectiveness of antiproliferative and antioxidant activity of differently processed ethanol extracts were determined and compared. The content of glucans (total, α- and β-) strongly depended on the extraction time and particle size, but only interaction of these parameters influenced the TPC. Gallic acid, quercetin, -cinnamic acid, kaempferol, hesperetin and naringenin were detected in extracts by HPLC-DAD.

Lymph node metastases in clinically N0 patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinomas - a single institution experience.

Purpose: To register the frequency of central and lateral lymph node metastases (LNMs) from papillary thyroid microcarcinomas (PTMCs), and to assess whether sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy of the lateral compartment is an accurate technique to select patients with true positive but clinically negative lymph nodes for one-time selective lateral neck dissection (sLND). The correlation between tumor characteristics (size, multifocality, bilaterality, capsular invasion) and LNMs was analyzed.

Methods: During a 10-year-period (2004-2013), 111 clinically N0 patients with PTMCs had total thyroidectomy, central neck dissection and SLN biopsy of the lateral neck compartment in our institution.

New Iminodiacetate-Thiosemicarbazone Hybrids and Their Copper(II) Complexes Are Potential Ribonucleotide Reductase R2 Inhibitors with High Antiproliferative Activity.

As ribonucleotide reductase (RNR) plays a crucial role in nucleic acid metabolism, it is an important target for anticancer therapy. The thiosemicarbazone Triapine is an efficient R2 inhibitor, which has entered ∼20 clinical trials. Thiosemicarbazones are supposed to exert their biological effects through effectively binding transition-metal ions.

The Prognostic Role of Androgen Receptor in Patients with Early-Stage Breast Cancer: A Meta-analysis of Clinical and Gene Expression Data.

Androgen receptor (AR) expression has been observed in about 70% of patients with breast cancer, but its prognostic role remains uncertain. To assess the prognostic role of AR expression in early-stage breast cancer, we performed a meta-analysis of studies that evaluated the impact of AR at the protein and gene expression level on disease-free survival (DFS) and/or overall survival (OS). Eligible studies were identified by systematic review of electronic databases using the MeSH-terms "breast neoplasm" and "androgen receptor" and were selected after a qualitative assessment based on the REMARK criteria.

Ovarian Preservation from Tumors and Torsions in Girls: Prospective Diagnostic Study.

Study Objective: To develop a new decision tree system (DTS) for the management of adnexal masses in prepubertal and adolescent girls, aimed to improve the distinction between benign and malignant masses, help preserve affected ovaries during surgery, and reduce the rate of surgical management of uncomplicated functional ovarian cysts.

Design: A prospective diagnostic study using clinical and ultrasound data collected for all patients younger than 19 years of age with adnexal masses managed between 2006 and 2015.
