The end of treatment (EOT) is a significant time point along the childhood cancer treatment-survivorship continuum, and is recognized as a time when childhood cancer survivors (CCS) and their families experience significant vulnerability and stress. There is a call by families and healthcare professionals alike for standardized, comprehensive EOT services to successfully navigate through this transition period and better cope with posttreatment medical, physical, and social-emotional issues. A multidisciplinary team of pediatric oncology health care professionals developed and implemented a two-session psychoeducational program to address these EOT needs.

A Case of Cardioversion and Management of Atrial Flutter in the Emergency Department.

Adv Emerg Nurs J

August 2024

Author Affiliation: ENP Program, Beyster Institute for Nursing Research, Advanced Practice, and Simulation, Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science, University of San Diego, San Diego, California.

Atrial flutter is a supraventricular cardiac arrhythmia commonly characterized by two or three rapid atrial contractions for every ventricular contraction and a rapid ventricular rate that can be identified by a sawtooth pattern on an electrocardiogram. Patients often present with symptoms of heart failure and face the risk of atrial thrombus with a potential for systemic embolization. As such, pharmacologic rate and rhythm control, transesophageal echocardiogram, direct current cardioversion, and anticoagulation therapies may all be required for patient management.

Providing end-of-life (EOL) care to pediatric patients and their families is challenging. Newly licensed nurses, especially those working with the hematology/oncology population, have little to no experience providing the specialized care needed for the dying child. An evidence-based continuing professional development activity provided a novel approach to improve the knowledge, attitudes, and comfort levels of nurse residents related to pediatric EOL care.

Background: Breastfeeding and human milk have well-documented health benefits for newborn infants, particularly those who are sick. However, breastfeeding rates and human milk feeding among infants in neonatal intensive units (NICU) in Thailand are still low; thus, breastfeeding promotion and support are required for Thai mothers of premature infants. Newly graduated nurses can play a critical role within the healthcare support system and can have a significant impact on improving breastfeeding practices in the NICU.

May 2023

Author Affiliations: Director (Dr Cámpoli), Institute for Nursing Research & Quality Management; and Assistant Director (Mulvey), Institute for Nursing Research & Quality, Silver Spring, Maryland.

To raise nurses' voices and promote nurse-led research, the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Research Council 2022 Research Priorities included disseminating a research agenda for practice-based research, promoting interprofessional research, and encouraging equitable and inclusive participation on research teams. Expressions of nurses from around the world, however, described how organizational constraints and financial barriers are real challenges that nurse researchers must face, along with forming interdisciplinary teams to work with human subjects. Entities doing research seem to have a heavy focus on academic research where clinical bedside nurses feel separated from nursing research.
