The effects of lithium (Li) isotopes and their impact on biological processes have recently gained increased attention due to the significance of Li as a pharmacological agent and the potential that Li isotopic effects in neuroscience contexts may constitute a new example of quantum effects in biology. Previous studies have shown that the two Li isotopes, which differ in mass and nuclear spin, have unusual different effects and and, although some molecular targets for Li isotope fractionation have been proposed, it is not known whether those result in observable downstream neurophysiological effects. In this work we studied fluxes of Li, sodium (Na) and calcium (Ca) ions in the mitochondrial sodium/calcium/lithium exchanger (NCLX), the only transporter known with recognized specificity for Li.

Purpose: The absence of clinically applicable imaging techniques for continuous monitoring of transplanted cells poses a significant obstacle to the clinical translation of stem cell-based therapies for vascular regeneration. This study aims to optimize a clinically applicable, non-invasive imaging technique to longitudinally monitor vascular endothelial cells (ECs) for vascular regeneration in peripheral artery disease (PAD).
Methods: Human induced pluripotent stem cells (HiPSCs) were employed to generate ECs (HiPSC-ECs).

Graphene oxide (GO)-based membranes hold significant promise for applications ranging from energy storage to protective coatings, to saline water and produced water treatment, owing to their chemical stability and unique barrier properties achieving a high selectivity for water permeation. However, unmodified GO membranes are not stable when submerged in liquid water, creating challenges with their commercial utilization in aqueous filtration and pervaporation applications. To mitigate this, we develop an approach to modify GO membranes through a combination of low temperature thermal reduction and metal cation crosslinking.

While the former phenomenon resembles classical wetting, the latter is dictated by contact and adhesion theories. The classical Young-Dupre law applies to the wetting of pure liquids on rigid solids, whereas conventional contact mechanics theories account for rigid-on-soft or soft-on-rigid contacts with small deformations in the elastic limit.

Understanding nanoparticle-cell interaction is essential for advancing research in nanomedicine and nanotoxicology. Apart from the transcytotic pathway mediated by cellular recognition and energetics, nanoparticles (including nanomedicines) may harness the paracellular route for their transport by inducing endothelial leakiness at cadherin junctions. This phenomenon, termed as NanoEL, is correlated with the physicochemical properties of the nanoparticles in close association with cellular signalling, membrane mechanics, as well as cytoskeletal remodelling.

Plasmonic tunnel junctions are a unique electroluminescent system in which light emission occurs via an interplay between tunnelling electrons and plasmonic fields instead of electron-hole recombination as in conventional light-emitting diodes. It was previously shown that placing luminescent molecules in the tunneling pathway of nanoscopic tunnel junctions results in peculiar upconversion electroluminescence where the energy of emitted photons exceeds that of excitation electrons. Here we report the observation of upconversion electroluminescence in macroscopic van der Waals plasmonic tunnel junctions comprising gold and few-layer graphene electrodes separated by a ~2-nm-thick hexagonal boron nitride tunnel barrier and a monolayer semiconductor.

Future pulsed-power electronic systems based on dielectric capacitors require the use of environment-friendly materials with high energy-storage performance that can operate efficiently and reliably in harsh environments. Here, a study of multilayer structures, combining paraelectric-like BaSrTiO (BST) with relaxor-ferroelectric BaZrTiO (BZT) layers on SrTiO-buffered Si substrates, with the goal to optimize the high energy-storage performance is presented. The energy-storage properties of various stackings are investigated and an extremely large maximum recoverable energy storage density of ≈165.

Globally, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)-related research on paper products has focused on food packaging with less consideration on the presence of PFAS at different stages of the paper recycling chain. This study analysed the prevalence of PFAS in paper grades used for the manufacture of recycled paperboard. The presence of PFAS was attributed to the use of PFAS-containing additives, consumer usage, exposure to packed goods as well as contamination during mingling, sorting, collection, and recovery of paper recycling material.
