Motivation: The ribosomal DNA (rDNA) arrays are highly repetitive and homogenous regions which exist in all life. Due to their repetitiveness, current assembly methods do not fully assemble the rDNA arrays in humans and many other eukaryotes, and so variation within the rDNA arrays cannot be effectively studied.
Results: Here, we present the tool ribotin to assemble full length rDNA copies, or morphs.

Optic neuritis (ON) is associated with numerous immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, but 50% patients are ultimately diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). Differentiating MS-ON from non-MS-ON acutely is challenging but important; non-MS ON often requires urgent immunosuppression to preserve vision. Using data from the United Kingdom Biobank we showed that combining an MS-genetic risk score (GRS) with demographic risk factors (age, sex) significantly improved MS prediction in undifferentiated ON; one standard deviation of MS-GRS increased the Hazard of MS 1.

Background: The understanding of the molecular genetic contributions to smoking is largely limited to the additive effects of individual single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), but the underlying genetic risk is likely to also include dominance, epistatic, and gene-environment interactions.
Methods: To begin to address this complexity, we attempted to identify genetic interactions between rs16969968, the most replicated SNP associated with smoking quantity, and all SNPs and genes across the genome.
Results: Using the UK Biobank European subsample, we found one SNP, rs1892967, and two genes, PCNA and TMEM230, that showed a significant genome-wide interaction with rs16969968 for log10 CPD and raw CPD, respectively, in a sample of 116 442 individuals who self-reported currently or previously smoking.

PTPRF interacting protein alpha 1 (PPFIA1) encodes for liprin-α1, a member of the leukocyte common antigen-related protein tyrosine phosphatase (LAR-RPTPs)-interacting protein family. Liprin-α1 localizes to adhesive and invasive structures in the periphery of cancer cells, where it modulates migration and invasion in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and breast cancer. In this population-based study, these associations were examined from young adulthood to middle age.
Methods: Participants of a Finnish cohort study (N = 1955) were assessed at the ages of 22, 32, 42, and 52 using questionnaires covering daily smoking (yes/no) and the short 13-item Beck Depression Inventory.
