A comprehensive literature review is conducted to summarize and discuss prior findings on how cochlear implants (CI) affect the users' abilities to produce and control vocal and articulatory movements within the auditory-motor integration framework of speech. Patterns of speech production pre- versus post-implantation, post-implantation adjustments, deviations from the typical ranges of speakers with normal hearing (NH), the effects of switching the CI on and off, as well as the impact of altered auditory feedback on vocal and articulatory speech control are discussed. Overall, findings indicate that CIs enhance the vocal and articulatory control aspects of speech production at both segmental and suprasegmental levels.

Cochlear implants (CIs) are the most successful neural prostheses, enabling individuals with severe to profound hearing loss to access sounds and understand speech. While CI has demonstrated success, speech perception outcomes vary largely among CI listeners, with significantly reduced performance in noise. This review paper summarizes prior findings on speech-evoked cortical activities in adult CI listeners using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to understand (a) speech-evoked cortical processing in CI listeners compared to normal-hearing (NH) individuals, (b) the relationship between these activities and behavioral speech recognition scores, (c) the extent to which current fNIRS-measured speech-evoked cortical activities in CI listeners account for their differences in speech perception, and (d) challenges in using fNIRS for CI research.

This preliminary study sought to assess biomarkers of attention using electroencephalography (EEG) and eye tracking in two ultra-rare monogenic populations associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Relative to idiopathic ASD (n = 12) and neurotypical comparison (n = 49) groups, divergent attention profiles were observed for the monogenic groups, such that individuals with DYRK1A (n = 9) exhibited diminished auditory attention condition differences during an oddball EEG paradigm whereas individuals with SCN2A (n = 5) exhibited diminished visual attention condition differences noted by eye gaze tracking when viewing social interactions. Findings provide initial support for alignment of auditory and visual attention markers in idiopathic ASD and neurotypical development but not monogenic groups.

Food intake and energy expenditure are sensed and processed by multiple brain centres to uphold energy homeostasis. Evidence from the past decade points to the brain vasculature as a new critical player in regulating energy balance that functions in close association with the local neuronal networks. Nutritional imbalances alter many properties of the neurovascular system (such as neurovascular coupling and blood-brain barrier permeability), thus suggesting a bidirectional link between the nutritional milieu and neurovascular health.
