Background: There is conflicting data on whether clot retrieved from mechanical thrombectomy can predict stroke etiology or the success of recanalization. We aimed to analyse the relation between thrombus histology and stroke aetiology as well as recanalization.

Methodology: Histopathological analysis of clots retrieved from patients with acute ischemic stroke and large vessel occlusion was done.

Particulate matter (PM) significantly contributes to the global health crisis of respiratory diseases. It is known to induce and exacerbate conditions such as asthma and respiratory infections. Long exposure to PM can increase the risk of combined allergic rhinitis and asthma syndrome (CARAS).

Heart failure (HF) is a well-described final common pathway for a broad range of diseases however substantial confusion exists regarding how to describe, study, and track these underlying etiologic conditions. We describe (1) the overlap in HF etiologies, comorbidities, and case definitions as currently used in HF registries led or managed by members of the global HF roundtable; (2) strategies to improve the quality of evidence on etiologies and modifiable risk factors of HF in registries; and (3) opportunities to use clinical HF registries as a platform for public health surveillance, implementation research, and randomized registry trials to reduce the global burden of noncommunicable diseases. Investment and collaboration among countries to improve the quality of evidence in global HF registries could contribute to achieving global health targets to reduce noncommunicable diseases and overall improvements in population health.

Resequencing the complete SNCA locus in Indian patients with Parkinson's disease.

NPJ Parkinsons Dis

April 2024

Centre for Genetic Epidemiology, Institute for Clinical Epidemiology and Applied Biometry, University of Tübingen, Tübingen, Germany.

The genetic loci implicated in familial Parkinson's disease (PD) have limited generalizability to the Indian PD population. We tested mutations and the frequency of known mutations in the SNCA gene in a PD cohort from India. We selected 298 PD cases and 301 age-matched controls for targeted resequencing (before QC), along with 363 PD genomes of Indian ancestry and 1029 publicly available whole genomes from India as healthy controls (IndiGenomes), to determine the frequency of monogenic SNCA mutations.

Background: One of the reasons for the increase in cesarean section is the lack of knowledge of mothers in choosing the type of delivery. The present study aimed to determine the effect of education through pregnancy application during pregnancy on awareness and attitude and choice of delivery type in primiparous women at Shahid Alavi Specialized Medical Center clinic in Mashhad.

Methods: This study was a semi-experimental type.

A Novel PINK1 p.F385S Loss-of-Function Mutation in an Indian Family with Parkinson's Disease.

Mov Disord

July 2024

Centre for Genetic Epidemiology, Institute for Clinical Epidemiology and Applied Biometry, University of Tübingen, Tübingen, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on a new mutation in the PINK1 gene linked to Parkinson's disease in an Indian family, emphasizing the need for more research on PD in this population.
  • A novel homozygous PINK1 mutation (p.F385S) was discovered that destabilizes the protein’s active state, affecting its ability to perform essential functions related to mitochondrial health.
  • This mutation results in impaired phosphorylation and reduced mitophagy, contributing to the understanding of PD at a molecular level.

Article Synopsis
  • Diagnosing myocarditis in children with complete AV block is difficult, and temporary pacing support can be necessary until they recover.
  • The report details three cases where cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) was successfully done while a temporary permanent pacemaker was in place, assessing its impact on image quality.
  • The findings indicate that using a temporary pacemaker does not affect CMR image quality and is a reliable option for pacing in these patients.

Purpose: Endovascular treatment of direct carotid cavernous fistula (DCCF) requires invasive diagnostic cerebral angiography for diagnosis and planning; however, a less invasive modality like magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) can be useful, especially in high-risk cases. This single-centre study evaluated a newer MR angiography (MRA) sequence, silent MRA and the traditional time of flight (TOF) MRA for pre-procedural treatment planning of DCCF.

Methods: All consecutive DCCF patients who underwent TOF, silent MRA and diagnostic cerebral angiography were included in the study.

A hybrid 1D CNN-BiLSTM model for epileptic seizure detection using multichannel EEG feature fusion.

Biomed Phys Eng Express

April 2024

R. Madhavan Nayar Center for Comprehensive Epilepsy Care, Department of Neurology, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Kerala, India.

Epilepsy, a chronic non-communicable disease is characterized by repeated unprovoked seizures, which are transient episodes of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. While Electroencephalography (EEG) is considered as the gold standard for diagnosis in current clinical practice, manual inspection of EEG is time consuming and biased. This paper presents a novel hybrid 1D CNN-Bi LSTM feature fusion model for automatically detecting seizures.

Background: Writer's cramp is a task-specific focal hand dystonia, which is diagnosed clinically. Quantification of defect in WC is done using clinical scales, while digitized platforms are lacking.

Objective: To design and test a platform that can differentiate and quantify the abnormal kinematics of writing using a software interface and to validate it in adult-onset isolated writer's cramp (WC).

Background: In alignment with the Measles and Rubella (MR) Strategic Elimination plan, India conducted a mass measles and rubella vaccination campaign across the country between 2017 and 2020 to provide a dose of MR containing vaccine to all children aged 9 months to 15 years. We estimated campaign vaccination coverage in five districts in India and assessed campaign awareness and factors associated with vaccination during the campaign to better understand reasons for not receiving the dose.

Methods And Findings: Community-based cross-sectional serosurveys were conducted in five districts of India among children aged 9 months to 15 years after the vaccination campaign.

Background And Objectives: Arginine vasopressin (AVP) is an important hormone responsible for maintaining sodium homeostasis after pituitary surgery. The measurement of AVP levels is difficult because of its short half-life (t 1/2 ). Copeptin is a preprohormone of AVP, and it is a more stable peptide, which can be used as surrogate marker for AVP.

The best option among the endovascular options in long, complex femoropopliteal (FP) lesions, and factors affecting the patency have yet to be well described. There are few studies describing the mid- and long-term patency of endovascular stents in long-segment FP occlusions.  This study aimed to determine the technical success and mid-term patency of subintimal angioplasty with vasculomimetic stenting in Trans-Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus II (TASC) C and D FP disease.

Carotid body tumors are rare benign tumors that arise in the carotid space of neck typically presenting as soft to firm, painless swelling in the neck. While specific imaging characteristics have been previously described for carotid body tumors, we report a new imaging sign in three cases of carotid body tumors on computed tomography angiography.

Three-dimensional liver bioprinting is an emerging technology in the field of regenerative medicine that aids in the creation of functional tissue constructs that can be used as transplantable organ substitutes. During transplantation, the bioprinted donor liver must be protected from the oxidative stress environment created by various factors during the transplantation procedure, as well as from drug-induced damage from medications taken as part of the post-surgery medication regimen following the procedure. In this study, Silymarin, a flavonoid with the hepatoprotective properties were introduced into the GelMA bioink formulation to protect the bioprinted liver against hepatotoxicity.
