Article Synopsis
  • This study examines the dietary habits and nutrient intake of pregnant women from Croatia, Greece, Italy, and Slovenia, highlighting a lack of detailed research on nutrition's importance for maternal and fetal health.
  • Using a food frequency questionnaire, researchers analyzed data from 1,436 women, finding that most exceeded recommended limits for sugars and total fat, while also facing risks of deficiencies in key micronutrients like iron, folate, and vitamin D.
  • The findings suggest that consistent nutritional guidelines at national and European levels are crucial for enhancing maternal health during pregnancy.

There is growing literature about the SARS-CoV-2 pathogenetic effects exerted during pregnancy and whether vertical transmission or premature birth is possible. It is not well known whether changes in the immune system of pregnant women may lead to a marked susceptibility to infectious processes and the risk of adverse maternal and neonatal complications such as preterm birth, spontaneous abortion, hospitalization in an intensive care unit, transmission to the fetus or newborns, and fetal mortality are poorly understood. Along with this ongoing debate, it is not well defined whether, during pregnancy, the role of host susceptibility in producing a specific inflammatory response to SARS-CoV-2 may represent distinctive markers of risk of vertical transmission.

Objective: To verify the prevalence of novel definitions of familial short stature on a cross-sectional cohort of children referred for short stature when their height and that of both parents were measured.

Methods: We consecutively enrolled 65 individuals referred for short stature when both parents were present. We defined "target height-related short stature" (TH-SS) when child's height is ≤ - 2 SDS and included in the range of target height; suspected "autosomal dominant short stature" (AD-SS) when child height and at least one parent height are ≤ - 2 SDS; "constitutional familial short stature" (C-FSS) when a child with TH-SS does not have any parents with height ≤ - 2 SDS.

Ital J Pediatr

February 2021

Department of Clinical Sciences and Community Health, University of Milan, Fondazione IRCCS Cà Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Milan, Italy.

The availability of a COVID-19 vaccine has raised the issue of its compatibility with breastfeeding. Consequently, the Italian Society of Neonatology (SIN), the Italian Society of Pediatrics (SIP), the Italian Society of Perinatal Medicine (SIMP), the Italian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (SIGO), the Italian Association of Hospital Obstetricians-Gynecologists (AOGOI) and the Italian Society of Infectious and Tropical Diseases (SIMIT) have made an ad hoc consensus statement. Currently, knowledge regarding the administration of COVID-19 vaccine to the breastfeeding mother is limited.

Background: Increasing efforts toward quality improvement (QI) are necessary in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to reduce maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity and to promote respectful care. In Brazil, perinatal health indicators are below targets in several states despite universal access to perinatal services and very high rates of institutional births, indicating poor quality of care (QoC) as a key issue to be addressed. However, research efforts to develop and test QoC improvement interventions are scarce.

Background: Conventional technique for transcutaneous bone-anchored hearing implants surgery requires the elevation of a large retroauricular skin flap to expose the site of implantation, that may cause a large scar and the interruption of retroauricular vasculature.

Methods: A less invasive, endoscopic-assisted modification of the surgical technique is described, which provides access to the implant site through two small skin incisions and the creation of a pocket in the retroauricular area.

Conclusion: Endoscopic-assisted bone-anchored hearing implant surgery could be a viable option for transcutaneous bone-anchored hearing implant surgery, especially for pediatric patients.
