A major goal in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) long-term management is to ensure a successful transition to adult age. This study aims to assess transition outcomes in a group of JIA patients during their passage from pediatric to adult healthcare assistance at a single center. This is a cross-sectional study.

Nurse-Driven Interventions Reduce Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection Close to Zero in One Pediatric Oncologic Facility: A Single-Center Retrospective Observational Study.

Background: Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) are critical infectious complications among pediatric hematology-oncology patients, and the management of central venous catheters (CVCs) by healthcare personnel can significantly influence the incidence of these infections. This study evaluates the impact of nurse-led changes in CVC management on the incidence of CLABSIs.

Methods: This single-center, retrospective observational study was conducted at an urban, tertiary referral, and academic center serving pediatric patients.

Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH)/Macrophage Activation Syndrome (MAS) in children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been reported only anecdotally. This study aimed at describing the clinical features and outcomes of children diagnosed with both IBD and HLH/MAS. Data on IBD and HLH/MAS characteristics, biochemical, microbiological and genetic assessments, treatments, and outcomes were collected from the Italian Pediatric IBD Registry and presented using descriptive statistics.

Biofilms are the most common lifestyle adopted by bacterial communities where cells live embedded in a self-produced hydrated matrix. Although polysaccharides are considered essential for matrix architecture, their possible functional roles are still rather unexplored. The primary structure of polysaccharides produced by Klebsiella pneumoniae and species of the Burkholderia cepacia Complex revealed a composition rich in rhamnose.

Genital Dysbiosis and Different Systemic Immune Responses Based on the Trimester of Pregnancy in SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

Respiratory infections are common in pregnancy with conflicting evidence supporting their association with neonatal congenital anomalies, especially during the first trimester. We profiled cytokine and chemokine systemic responses in 242 pregnant women and their newborns after SARS-CoV-2 infection, acquired in different trimesters. Also, we tested transplacental IgG passage and maternal vaginal-rectal microbiomes.

The Women4Health cohort: a unique cohort to study women-specific mechanisms of cardio-metabolic regulation.

Aims: Epidemiological research has shown relevant differences between sexes in clinical manifestations, severity, and progression of cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. To date, the mechanisms underlying these differences remain unknown. Given the rising incidence of such diseases, gender-specific research on established and emerging risk factors, such as dysfunction of glycaemic and/or lipid metabolism, of sex hormones and of gut microbiome, is of paramount importance.

Development and Validation of an HPLC-UV Method for the Quantification of Acyclovir and Ganciclovir in the Plasma of Pediatric Immunocompromised Patients.

Acyclovir and ganciclovir comprise the prophylaxis and treatment of herpesvirus and cytomegalovirus infections occurring in immunocompromised patients. Their therapeutic drug monitoring is fundamental because of interindividual variability leading to side effects and drug resistance and is performed through several techniques, such as liquid chromatography coupled with UV spectrophotometry (HPLC-UV) or mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Therefore, we developed and validated a low-cost, non-time-consuming, and low-sample-consuming HPLC-UV method.

Clenching the Strings of Bruxism Etiopathogenesis: Association Analyses on Genetics and Environmental Risk Factors in a Deeply Characterized Italian Cohort.

Bruxism is a worldwide oral health problem. Although there is a consensus about its multifactorial nature, its precise etiopathogenetic mechanisms are unclear. This study, taking advantage of a deeply characterized cohort of 769 individuals (aged 6-89 years) coming from Northern Italy's genetically isolated populations, aims to epidemiologically describe environmental risk factors for bruxism development and identify genes potentially involved through a Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) approach.

The economic value of human milk from three cohort studies in Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy.

Background: The Mothers' Milk Tool, developed and launched by the Australian National University and Alive & Thrive in 2022, allows to estimate the volume and value of breastmilk using prevalence rates of breastfeeding by month of age from birth to 36 months. The objective of this study was to obtain these estimates for three cohort studies conducted in a region of Italy.

Methods: Breastfeeding data from three cohort studies carried out in 1999, 2007 and 2016, with follow-up to 12, 24 and 36 months of 842, 400 and 265 children, respectively, were entered into the downloadable version of the tool.

Rheumatological complaints in H syndrome: from inflammatory profiling to target treatment in a case study.

Background: H Syndrome is a rare genetic condition caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in the SLC29A3 gene. It is characterized by a wide range of clinical manifestations, many of which are related to the immune-rheumatological field. These include scleroderma-like skin changes, deforming arthritis, and enlarged lymph nodes.

Liver Bacterial Colonization in Patients with Obesity and Gut Dysbiosis.

Purpose: Recently, the link between gut microbiota, liver inflammation, and obesity has become an interesting focus of research. The aim of this study is to show the possible relation between gut microbiota dysbiosis in patients with obesity and the presence of bacterial genomes in their liver biopsies.

Gender-based medicine is attracting increasing interest every day, but studies on pediatric populations are still limited. In this setting, sex differences among patients undergoing total parenteral nutrition (TPN) have not been previously reported. This study investigated the presence of sex differences in parenteral nutrition composition and outcomes among a cohort of pediatric patients admitted at the Oncohematology and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit of the Institute for Maternal and Child Health "Burlo Garofolo" of Trieste, Italy.

Inborn Errors of Immunity in Children with Autoimmune and Allergic Complaints: A Single Center Experience from Diagnosis to Treatment.

Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) associated with immune dysregulation are not sufficiently addressed in shared recommendation, resulting in delayed diagnosis and high morbidity. The availability of precision medicine for some of these immune defects makes it urgent to evaluate effective strategies to diagnose and treat such defects before the occurrence of severe complications. A diagnosis of an IEI in these patients enabled the use of a more specific treatment in most cases, and these have the potential to prevent further disease progression.

Odontostomatological Traits in North-Eastern Italy's Isolated Populations: An Epidemiological Cross-Sectional Study.

Malocclusions and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are oral health problems that are spread worldwide. To date, few studies focused on their prevalence and associated risk factors are available. This study aims to define the prevalence and distribution of odontostomatological traits and evaluate specific risk factors in isolated villages in north-eastern Italy, taking advantage of their environmental homogeneity.

Asbestos Fibers Enhance the TMEM16A Channel Activity in Xenopus Oocytes.

Background: The interaction of asbestos fibers with target cell membranes is still poorly investigated. Here, we detected and characterized an enhancement of chloride conductance in oocyte cell membranes induced by exposure to crocidolite (Croc) asbestos fibers.

Methods: A two-microelectrode voltage clamp technique was used to test the effect of Croc fiber suspensions on outward chloride currents evoked by step membrane depolarization.

To date, pain and anxiety are the most common symptoms reported by children who refer to pediatric emergency department. Despite it is well known that the undertreatment of this condition has some negative consequences in a short term and long term of time, gaps in the management of pain in this setting still persist. This subgroup analysis aims to describe the current state of art of pediatric sedation and analgesia in Italian emergency departments and to identify existing gaps to solve.

Pre-Transplant Total Lymphocyte Count Determines Anti-Thymocyte Globulin Exposure, Modifying Graft-versus-Host Disease Incidence and Post-Transplant Thymic Restoration: A Single-Center Retrospective Study.

The use of anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) as part of conditioning to prevent graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) may severely impair immune reconstitution (IR). We analyzed relationships between ATG exposure, the recipient lymphocyte count, IR, and transplant outcome. We retrospectively reviewed patients aged ≤ 18 years who underwent allogeneic HSCT between April 2005 and April 2020.

An Insight into Enamel Resin Infiltrants with Experimental Compositions.

Resin infiltration is a conservative treatment of initial enamel carious lesions. Only one infiltrant material is available on the market (Icon, DMG), and research is now investigating new chemical compositions so as to further exploit the benefits of the resin infiltration technique. A literature search of the articles testing the effects of different formulations on mechanical properties, resin penetration ability, remineralizing, and antibacterial activities was conducted.
