Cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction or limb ischemia are characterized by regression of blood vessels. Local delivery of growth factors (GFs) involved in angiogenesis such as fibroblast blast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) has been shown to trigger collateral neovasculature and might lead to a therapeutic strategy. In vivo, heparin, a sulfated polysaccharide present in abundance in the extracellular matrix (ECM), has been shown to function as a local reservoir for FGF-2 by binding FGF-2 and other morphogens and it plays a role in the evolution of GF gradients.

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) play a pivotal role in pathogen attachment and entry into host cells, where the interaction with GAGs is critical for a diverse range of bacteria and viruses. This study focuses on elucidating the specific interactions between sulfated GAGs and the adhesin OmcB (Outer membrane complex protein B) of Chlamydia species, examining how structural characteristics of GAGs, such as sulfation degree and molecular weight, influence their binding affinity and thereby affect bacterial infectivity. A surface-based binding assay is established to determine the binding constants of OmcB with various GAGs.

The importance of lectins in biological processes such as pathogen recognition, cell adhesion, and cell recognition is well documented. The paper reports new multifunctional plant biostimulant formulations obtained via in situ hydrogelation of chitosan with salicylaldehyde in the presence of a mimetic naphthalimide-based strigolactone, in specific conditions. Various analytical techniques (FTIR, H NMR, SEM, POM, TGA, WRXD) were employed to understand the particularities of the hydrogelation mechanism and its consequences on the formulations' properties. Further, in order to evaluate their potential for the targeted application, the swelling in media of pH characteristic for different soils, water holding capacity, soil biodegradability, in vitro release of the strigolactone mimic and impact on tomatoes plant growth in laboratory conditions were investigated and discussed.

Conjugated polymers have become materials of choice for applications ranging from flexible optoelectronics to neuromorphic computing, but their polydispersity and tendency to aggregate pose severe challenges to their precise characterization. Here, the combination of vacuum electrospray deposition (ESD) with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is used to acquire, within the same experiment, assembly patterns, full mass distributions, exact sequencing, and quantification of polymerization defects. In a first step, the ESD-STM results are successfully benchmarked against NMR for low molecular mass polymers, where this technique is still applicable.

A cationic, dendrimer-like oligo(aminoamide) carrier with four-arm topology based on succinoyl tetraethylene pentamine and histidines, cysteines, and -terminal azido-lysines was screened for plasmid DNA delivery on various cell lines. The incorporated azides allow modification with various shielding agents of different polyethylene glycol (PEG) lengths and/or different ligands by copper-free click reaction, either before or after polyplex formation. Prefunctionalization was found to be advantageous over postfunctionalization in terms of nanoparticle formation, stability, and efficacy.

Understanding the wettability of soft surfaces is of key importance for the development of protective and repellent coatings and controlling droplet dynamics when required. There are many factors that affect the wetting and dynamic dewetting behavior of soft surfaces, such as the formation of wetting ridges, the adaptive behavior of the surface caused by the interaction of the fluid with the surface, or the presence of free oligomers that are washed out of the soft surface. In this work, we report the fabrication and characterization of three soft polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surfaces with elastic moduli ranging from 7 kPa to 56 kPa.

Interplay between non-cancerous cells (immune, fibroblasts, mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC), and endothelial cells (EC)) has been identified as vital in driving tumor progression. As studying such interactions in vivo is challenging, ex vivo systems that can recapitulate in vivo scenarios can aid in unraveling the factors impacting tumorigenesis and metastasis. Using the synthetic tumor microenvironment mimics (STEMs)-a spheroid system composed of breast cancer cells (BCC) with defined human MSC and EC fractions, here we show that EC organization into vascular structures is BC phenotype dependent, and independent of ERα expression in epithelial cancer cells, and involves MSC-mediated Notch1 signaling.
