In this study, we examined the chemical changes occurring in ground tire rubber (GTR) and on its surface as a result of gamma irradiation in water, with low doses of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 kGy. To better distinguish the changes the radiation caused in the GTR and the surface activation of the GTR caused by the irradiated water, we also performed radiation treatments in an inert atmosphere. We mixed the treated GTRs with fresh rubber, and after vulcanization, investigated the mechanical properties and conducted dose optimization.

Mesoporous materials containing heteroelements have a huge potential for use as catalysts, exchangers, and adsorbents due to their tunable nanometer-sized pores and exceptionally large internal surfaces accessible to bulky organic molecules. In the present work, ordered mesoporous silica containing Ni atoms as active sites was synthesized by a new low-temperature method of condensation of silica precursors on a micellar template from aqueous solutions in the presence of nickel salt. The homogeneity of the resulting product was achieved by introducing ammonia and ammonium salt as a buffer to maintain a constant pH value.

Semi-crystalline polymers exhibit microphase separation into crystalline and amorphous domains characterized by multiple structural levels with sizes ranging from ångströms to hundreds of nanometres. The combination of small-angle (SANS) and wide-angle (WANS) neutron scattering on the same beamline enables reliable characterization of such materials under application-relevant conditions, with the unique advantage of contrast variation by controlled labelling, allowing the structure of such multi-component systems to be resolved in detail. This paper reports a structural analysis performed on deuterated polymer membranes based on syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) using an extended -range SANS and WANS combination, always with the same neutron scattering instrument, either a pinhole SANS diffractometer installed at a research reactor or a 'small- and wide-angle' time-of-flight diffractometer installed at a neutron spallation source.

The behavior of single layer van der Waals (vdW) materials is profoundly influenced by the immediate atomic environment at their surface, a prime example being the myriad of emergent properties in artificial heterostructures. Equally significant are adsorbates deposited onto their surface from ambient. While vdW interfaces are well understood, our knowledge regarding atmospheric contamination is severely limited.

Spectral tuning of biotemplated ZnO photonic nanoarchitectures for photocatalytic applications.

R Soc Open Sci

July 2022

Institute of Technical Physics and Materials Science, Centre for Energy Research, 29-33 Konkoly Thege M. St., 1121 Budapest, Hungary.

The photocatalytic activity of a flat surface can be increased by micro- and nanostructuring the interface to increase the area of the contact surface between the photocatalyst and the solute, and moreover, to optimize charge carrier transfer. Further enhancement can be achieved by using photonic nanostructures, which exhibit photonic band gap (PBG). Structurally coloured butterfly wings offer a rich 'library' of PBGs in the visible spectral range which can be used as naturally tuned sample sets for biotemplating.

Rate constants of chlorine atom reactions with organic molecules in aqueous solutions, an overview.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

August 2022

Institute for Energy Security and Environmental Safety, Centre for Energy Research, Radiation Chemistry Department, ELKH, Budapest, Hungary.

Rate constants of chlorine atom (Cl) reactions (k) determined using a large variation of experimental methods, including transient measurements, steady-state and computation techniques, were collected from the literature and were discussed together with the reaction mechanisms. The k values are generally in the 10-10 mol dm s range when the basic reaction between the Cl and the target molecule is H-atom abstraction. When Cl addition to double bonds dominates the interaction, the k values are in the 1 × 10-2 × 10 mol dm s range.

Interfacial Water and Microheterogeneity in Aqueous Solutions of Ionic Liquids.

J Phys Chem B

June 2022

Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering "G. Natta", Politecnico di Milano, 20133 Milano, Italy.

In this work, aqueous solutions of two prototypical ionic liquids (ILs), [BMIM][BF] and [BMIM][TfO], were investigated by UV Raman spectroscopy and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) in the water-rich domain, where strong heterogeneities at mesoscopic length scales (microheterogeneity) were expected. Analyzing Raman data by a differential method, the solute-correlated (SC) spectrum was extracted from the OH stretching profiles, emphasizing specific hydration features of the anions. SC-UV Raman spectra pointed out the molecular structuring of the interfacial water in these microheterogeneous IL/water mixtures, in which IL aggregates coexist with bulk water domains.

A great number of biologically active compounds contain at least one amine function. Appropriate selectivity can only be accomplished in a few cases upon the substitution of these groups, thus functionalization of amines generally results in a mixture of them. The separation of these derivatives with very similar characteristics can only be performed on a preparative scale or by applying pre-optimized HPLC methods.

We report here the development of a surface-modified quartz glass sheet, which affords an opportunity for converting conventional spectrofluorometers to ion-selective optochemical sensors by placing it diagonally into a photometric cuvette. Moreover, we describe a generalizable technique, which allows the usage of any polymerizable ionophores for developing multiple-use fluorescent chemosensors of various selectivity. A fluorescent bis(acridino)-crown ether containing allyl groups was photocatalytically copolymerized with a methacrylate-acrylamide-based monomer mixture to obtain an ion-selective sensor membrane layer on the surface of the cuvette-compatible glass sheet.
