Using DFT calculations, the structural and electronic properties of the ZZ7 p-PdSe nanoribbons (ZZ7) with the four kinds of vacancy defects, including ZZ7-V, ZZ7-V, ZZ7-V, and ZZ7-V are studied, in which their stability, diverse geometries, and altered electronic properties are determined through the formation energies, optimal structural parameters, electronic band structures, and DOSs. Specifically, the formation energies of all studied systems show significant negative values around -3.9 eV, evidencing their good thermal stability.

Phase separation and aggregation behaviour of triton X-100 (TX-100) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) mixture were investigated using cloud point and UV-visible spectroscopic techniques. The effects of various hydrotropes (HYTs) - namely, sodium salicylate (SS), sodium benzoate (SB), glycerol (Glyc), and 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) - on the cloud point (CP) of TX-100 + BSA were determined. The obtained CP values for the mixed system in the presence of HYTs followed the order: The measured critical micellization concentration (CMC) values of the TX-100 + BSA mixture were found to be significantly altered with varying amounts of BSA.

To ensure that an external force can break the interaction between a protein and a ligand, the steered molecular dynamics simulation requires a harmonic restrained potential applied to the protein backbone. A usual practice is that all or a certain number of protein's heavy atoms or Cα atoms are fixed, being restrained by a small force. This present study reveals that while fixing both either all heavy atoms and or all Cα atoms is not a good approach, while fixing a too small number of few atoms sometimes cannot prevent the protein from rotating under the influence of the bulk water layer, and the pulled molecule may smack into the wall of the active site.

This study presents a thorough reinvestigation of the B isomers, first employing coupled-cluster theory CCSD(T) calculations to validate the performance of different DFT functionals. The B cation has two planar lowest-lying isomers, while the first 3D isomer is less stable than the global minimum by ∼10 kcal mol. The PBE functional, within this benchmark survey, has proved to be reliable in predicting relative energies for boron isomers.

Amplified warming of high latitudes and rapid thaw of frozen ground threaten permafrost carbon stocks. The presence of permafrost modulates water infiltration and flow, as well as sediment transport, on soil-mantled slopes, influencing the balance of advective fluvial processes to diffusive processes on hillslopes in ways that are different from temperate settings. These processes that shape permafrost landscapes also impact the carbon stored on soil-mantled hillslopes via temperature, saturation, and slope stability such that carbon stocks and landscape morphometry should be closely linked.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) derived from natural toxins and venoms offer a promising alternative source of antibiotics. Here, through structure-function-guided design, we convert two natural AMPs derived from the venom of the solitary eumenine wasp into α-helical AMPs with reduced toxicity that kill Gram-negative bacteria and in a preclinical mouse model. To identify the sequence determinants conferring antimicrobial activity, an alanine scan screen and strategic single lysine substitutions are made to the amino acid sequence of these natural peptides.

Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection, which is almost exclusively sexually transmitted, causes genital herpes. Many systems have been designed for the detection of SARS-CoV-2, which is the virus that causes COVID-19. SARS-CoV-2 is readily transmitted, resulting in the rapid spread of disease in human populations. Frequent testing at the point of care (POC) is a key aspect for controlling outbreaks caused by SARS-CoV-2 and other emerging pathogens, as the early identification of infected individuals can then be followed by appropriate measures of isolation or treatment, maximizing the chances of recovery and preventing infectious spread.

For complex and multi-layered clastic oil reservoir formations, modeling lithofacies and petrophysical parameters is essential for reservoir characterization, history matching, and uncertainty quantification. This study introduces a real oilfield case study that conducted high-resolution geostatistical modeling of 3D lithofacies and petrophysical properties for rapid and reliable history matching of the Luhais oil reservoir in southern Iraq. For capturing the reservoir's tidal depositional setting using data collected from 47 wells, the lithofacies distribution (sand, shaly sand, and shale) of a 3D geomodel was constructed using sequential indicator simulation (SISIM).
