A novel psychometric approach to assessing intersectional hiv stigma: the geometric intersectional stigma scales.

J Behav Med

October 2022

Institute for Collaboration on Health Intervention and Policy, University of Connecticut, Connecticut, United States.

Recent advances in stigma theories have emphasized intersectionality, but there are currently few approaches to measuring intersectional HIV stigma. Here we present a novel approach to assessing intersectional HIV stigma. Black/African American sexual minority men living with HIV (N = 437) completed newly developed measures of enacted and anticipated stigma along with a battery of instruments to examine construct validity.

Home-based service delivery has been used to improve access to HIV testing and antiretroviral initiation across sub-Saharan Africa, but it has yet to be leveraged to improve pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake. We interviewed 37 adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Eastern Cape, South Africa to explore why they chose to initiate PrEP or not following home-based HIV testing and referral for PrEP, and what influenced time to PrEP initiation. Participants reported that home visits provided a source of trusted information and a way to involve family members in their PrEP initiation decisions, motivating some to start PrEP.

Department of Allied Health Sciences, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate how likely first- and second-year college students are to engage in condomless sex while under the influence of alcohol compared to upperclassmen.
  • A total of 447 undergraduate students from a private institution in Massachusetts participated in the research.
  • Findings showed that first- and second-year students were significantly less likely to report engaging in condomless sex when drinking alcohol than their third- and fourth-year peers, which could impact understanding of sexually transmitted infections among college students.

Stigma changes over time: it waxes and wanes through history, is manifested within humans who develop over time and is tied to statuses (such as attributes, illnesses and identities) that have varying courses. Despite the inherent fluidity of stigma, theories, research and interventions typically treat associations between stigma and health as stagnant. Consequently, the literature provides little insight into when experiences of stigma are most harmful to health and when stigma interventions should be implemented.

Background: Postexercise hypotension (PEH) is the immediate reduction in blood pressure (BP) of 5-8 mmHg that occurs after a single bout of aerobic exercise among adults with hypertension. Across PEH studies, there are variations in the level of rigor of the study designs and methods that limit the conclusions that can be made about PEH.

Objective: To develop and then apply a methodological study quality evaluation checklist to aerobic exercise PEH studies to provide methodological guidance.

Believing That It Is Hazardous to Mix Alcohol With Medicines Predicts Intentional Nonadherence to Antiretrovirals.

J Acquir Immune Defic Syndr

June 2022

Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy (InCHIP), University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut.

Background: Drinking alcohol is a robust predictor of medication nonadherence. In addition to the impact of intoxication on adherence, individuals who believe that it is hazardous to mix medications with alcohol (ie, interactive toxicity beliefs) may forgo taking their medications when drinking. Previous research suggests that alcohol-related intentional nonadherence is a direct result of interactive toxicity beliefs.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective form of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevention for people at potential risk for exposure. Despite its demonstrated efficacy, PrEP uptake and adherence have been discouraging, especially among groups most vulnerable to HIV transmission. A primary message to persons who are at elevated risk for HIV has been to focus on risk reduction, sexual risk behaviors, and continued condom use, rarely capitalizing on the positive impact on sexuality, intimacy, and relationships that PrEP affords.

November 2021

Collaboratory on School and Child Health, Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT, United States.

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented considerable disruptions to routines that have challenged emotional well-being for children and their caregivers. One direction for supporting emotional well-being includes strategies that help children feel their best in the moment, which can bolster their capacity to respond appropriately to thoughts and behaviors. Strengthening emotional well-being equitably, however, must include opportunities in settings that are easily accessible to all, such as schools.

Introduction: Self-determination theory proposes that autonomy-supportive environments produce better health outcomes, and evidence demonstrating the importance of autonomy support for health behavior change has become increasingly clear. The bulk of the previous research has focused on the effects of receiving autonomy support, whereas the present study focuses on the potential impact of providing autonomy support for improving the weight loss and relationship satisfaction of the support provider.

Method: Sixty-four couples were randomized to a standard weight loss intervention or to an intervention that included training to enhance autonomy support behavior (e.
