Article Synopsis
  • Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a brain disorder caused by the accumulation of beta-amyloid in small blood vessels, leading to increased risk of bleeding in the brain and associated neurocognitive decline.
  • It often appears with age, frequently coexists with Alzheimer's Disease, and can result in significant health issues like spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage and progressive dementia.
  • Recent studies suggest a potential link between blood transfusions and the transmission of CAA, raising concerns about public health and the need for further research on whether CAA can be transmitted through blood, alongside its implications for screening practices.

Do nonfatal events during the first 5 years after coronary artery bypass surgery influence 10 year outcomes?

J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg

September 2024

Division of Cardiovascular Surgery, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, University Health Network, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how early adverse events after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) affect long-term survival and future adverse events over a 10-year period.
  • Out of 20,444 patients who survived the first 5 years post-CABG, 11% experienced nonfatal major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE), resulting in worse outcomes compared to those without such events.
  • Findings suggest that preventing these early adverse events may improve survival and reduce further complications in the long run.

Patients with lower socioeconomic status (SES) have poorer outcomes following acute myocardial infarction (AMI) than patients with higher SES; however, how sex modifies socioeconomic differences is unclear. Using the United Kingdom (UK) Myocardial Ischaemia National Audit Project (MINAP) registry, alongside Office of National Statistics (ONS) mortality data, we analyzed 736,420 AMI patients between 2005 and 2018, stratified by Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) score Quintiles (most affluent [Q1] to most deprived [Q5]). There was no significant difference in probability of in-hospital mortality in our adjusted model according to sex.

Electronic address:

Virtual assistants, broadly defined as digital services designed to simulate human conversation and provide personalized responses based on user input, have the potential to improve health care by supporting clinicians and patients in terms of diagnosing and managing disease, performing administrative tasks, and supporting medical research and education. These tasks are particularly helpful in vascular surgery, where the clinical and administrative burden is high due to the rising incidence of vascular disease, the medical complexity of the patients, and the potential for innovation and care advancement. The rapid development of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing techniques have facilitated the training of large language models, such as GPT-4 (OpenAI), which can support the development of increasingly powerful virtual assistants.

Post Hoc Bias in Treatment Decisions.

JAMA Netw Open

September 2024

Department of Psychology, Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey.

Importance: A goal of health care is to reduce symptoms and improve health status, whereas continuing dubious treatments can contribute to complacency, discourage the search for alternatives, and lead to shortfalls in care.

Objective: To test a potential bias in intuitive reasoning following a marginal improvement in symptoms after a dubious treatment (post hoc bias).

Design, Setting, And Participants: Surveys eliciting treatment recommendations for hypothetical patients were sent to community members throughout North America recruited via an online survey platform in the early winter months of 2023 and 2024 and presented to health care professionals (pharmacists who were approached in person using a secret shopper technique) in the summer months of 2023.
