Within the realm of pharmacological strategies for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) like hypertension, stroke, and heart failure, targeting the angiotensin-converting enzyme I (ACE-I) stands out as a significant treatment approach. This study employs QSAR modeling using Monte Carlo optimization techniques to investigate a range of compounds known for their ACE-I inhibiting properties. The modeling process involved leveraging local molecular graph invariants and SMILES notation as descriptors to develop conformation-independent QSAR models.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated a program in Croatia that used high-sensitivity troponin I (hsTnI) testing to assess cardiovascular risk in asymptomatic women over 45, finding that risk stratification effectively identified women needing further cardiac investigation.
  • Out of 1,034 participants, a significant number were classified as low risk, while nearly half of those referred for angiography had significant coronary artery disease.
  • The program not only reduced cardiovascular-related deaths by 40% but also proved cost-effective at a willingness-to-pay threshold of €45,000 per quality-adjusted life year (QALY), making it a valuable approach for improving women's health outcomes.

Renal denervation (RDN) as a method of treating arterial hypertension (AH) was introduced in Croatia in 2012. A multidisciplinary team and a network of hospitals that diagnose and treat patients with severe forms of AH were established, and a very strict diagnostic-treatment algorithm was prepared. At monthly meetings patients with truly resistant hypertension who were candidates for RDN were discussed.

Sedentary lifestyle and obesity increase the risk of coronary disease (CAD). The aims of this prospective study were to estimate the trends in physical activity (PA) level, accuracy of the Baecke's/LRC-PA questionnaires, and trends in obesity parameters (body mass index-BMI/waist-to-hip ratio-WHR) in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in the last two decades. We grouped 209 patients with ACS (UAP-unstable angina, STEMI-ST-elevation myocardial infarction, NSTEMI-non STEMI) by year of admission (Group 2002-05/Group 2017) and compared them by the levels of PA (Baecke's/LRC-PA questionnaires) and obesity parameters (BMI, WHR).

Aims: This prospective observational study evaluated the possible mechanisms of action of SGLT2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) without overt heart disease.

Methods: The study was designed to verify whether SGLT2i impact biomarkers of: myocardial stress-NT-proBNP, inflammation-high sensitivity C-reactive protein, oxidative stress -myeloperoxidase, functional and structural echocardiographic parameters, in patients with T2DM on metformin (heart failure stages A and B) who needed treatment intensification with a second antidiabetic agent. The patients were divided in two groups - the ones planned to receive SGLT2i or DPP-4 inhibitor (except saxagliptin).

Background: Pancreatic fistula after pancreaticoduodenectomy is one of the most severe complications with mortality rates as high as 45%, and the prediction of most severe form of fistula (grade C) is crucial for successful management of patients who are to undergo cephalic pancreatoduodenectomy. It has been found that the amount of abdominal fat may predict grade C postoperative pancreatic fistula. In this study, we analysed the value of retrorenal fat thickness in the prediction of grade C pancreatic fistula.

Background: Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) is one of the most severe complications after cephalic pancreaticoduodenectomy, with mortality as high as 30%. Risk scores may help predict the risk of POPF. Multiple external validations substantially improve generalized clinical acceptability of a scoring system.

Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) belongs to the group of enzymes which inhibition have the application in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. This study presents QSAR modeling for a set of compounds acting as CETP inhibitors based on the Monte Carlo optimization with SMILES notation and molecular graph-based descriptors, and field-based 3D modeling. A 3D QSAR model was developed for one random split into the training and test sets, whereas conformation independent QSAR models were developed for three random splits, with the results suggesting there is an excellent correlation between them.

In this article, we outline the latest guidelines published by the American Heart Association on sexual activity in patients with coronary artery disease, heart failure, structural heart diseases, arrhythmias, implanted pacemakers or cardioverter defibrillators, as well as on treatment options of sexual dysfunction. Sexual activities are similar to mild/moderate physical activity during a short period. Most patients are recommended to involve in sexual activity after prior comprehensive evaluation of physical condition.

We investigated correlation between the normal level of air pollution, weather conditions and stroke occurrence in the region of Southeast Europe with a humid continental climate. This retrospective study included 1963 patients, 1712 (87.2%) with ischemic (IS) and 251 (12.

In this study, we investigated the correlation of air temperature, pressure and concentration of air pollutants with the rate of admissions for cardiac arrhythmias at two clinical centers in the area with a humid continental climate. This retrospective study included 3749 patients with arrhythmias admitted to emergency department (ED). They were classified into four groups: supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), ventricular tachycardia (VT), atrial fibrillation/undulation (Afib/Aund), and palpitations (with no ECG changes, or with sinus tachycardia and extrasystoles).

Aim: To define trends in age-adjusted acute myocardial infarction mortality and morbidity in women and men in the city of Zagreb, Croatia, in the period 1979-2001.

Methods: Acute myocardial infarctions occurring in both men and women at ages between 25 and 74 years were analyzed by using 1979-2001 data from the Acute Myocardial Infarction Population-based Register for the City of Zagreb, Croatia. The patients with myocardial infarction were identified retrospectively from the hospital discharge reports and death certificates in Zagreb hospitals and the Croatian Statistical Bureau.

The authors outlined the geographical distribution of individuals displaying longevity in the Republic of Croatia. Elderly people, aged 80 years and older, have been the subject of this study and were viewed in several aspects including the number of elderly people and age-specific mortality rate by districts. Data for the years 1981 and 1991 were reviewed.
