Interventions for recurrent embryo implantation failure: An umbrella review.

Int J Gynaecol Obstet

December 2024

Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, University of Granada, Granada, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • A systematic review was conducted to evaluate various interventions for recurrent implantation failure (RIF), summarizing findings from randomized clinical trials (RCTs) related to treatment effectiveness in terms of clinical pregnancy rates (CPR) and live birth rates (LBR).
  • A total of 47 systematic reviews were analyzed, revealing that most had low methodological quality and inconsistencies, highlighting issues like overlap of RCTs and varied definitions of RIF across studies.
  • Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), intralipid infusion, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) showed significant impacts on CPR and LBR, indicating potential benefits from these treatments based on the GRADE strength assessment.

Molecular epidemiology of carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacilli in Ecuador.

BMC Infect Dis

April 2024

Department of Microbiology, School of Medicine and PhD Program in Clinical Medicine and Public Health, University of Granada & ibs, Granada, Spain.

Introduction: Carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacilli are a worldwide concern because of high morbidity and mortality rates. Additionally, the increasing prevalence of these bacteria is dangerous. To investigate the extent of antimicrobial resistance and prioritize the utility of novel drugs, we evaluated the molecular characteristics and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii in Ecuador in 2022.

Glutaraldehyde is a high-efficiency disinfectant that has been included in the protocols of some hospitals for controlling the spread of SARS-CoV-2, together with sodium hypochlorite and quaternary ammonium disinfectants. However, exposure has been poorly studied in workplace settings, despite the association between glutaraldehyde and respiratory diseases and skin conditions in exposed workers. This study evaluated the magnitude of exposure associated with the use of glutaraldehyde in healthcare workers across various work areas of a first level of Hospital-Based Care in Colombia.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the risk factors for colistin-resistant carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CR-CPE), and describe the mortality associated with this organism, in a low-income country.

Methods: A descriptive, observational, and prospective multicenter study was carried out in Guayaquil, Ecuador. All patients with carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales admitted between December 2021 and May 2022 were enrolled.

Added Sugar Consumption in Spanish Children (7-12 y) and Nutrient Density of Foods Contributing to Such Consumption: An Observational Study.

Nutrients

January 2023

Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology "José Mataix", Biomedical Research Center, University of Granada, Avda. del Conocimiento s/n., 18071 Granada, Spain.

Background: Diets rich in free sugars are associated with an increased risk of obesity. The aim of the present study is to estimate the intake of added sugars in the population of Spanish children and analyze the quality of the foods that contribute to this intake.

Methods: An observational study was conducted to collect self-reported information on weekly food consumption in 1775 Spanish children (7-12 years).

Colistin resistance screening by 3 μg/ml colistin agar in Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales.

J Clin Lab Anal

September 2022

Department of Microbiology, School of Medicine and PhD Program in Clinical Medicine and Public Health, University of Granada & ibs, Granada, Spain.

Background: In low- and middle-income countries, the use of colistin in therapeutic regimens is common, to treat infections produced for Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) due to limited access to the recently discovered-approved antibiotics. Furthermore, the technical limitations to perform colistin susceptibility tests make it difficult to assess the suitability of this treatment for each patient, as well as to monitor the rates of resistance. In the present study, we describe the use of agar dilution using a unique colistin concentration of 3 μg/ml to discriminate isolates with colistin resistance in CPE obtained from clinical samples.

Andalusian School of Public Health, 18011 Granada, Spain; Consortium for Networked Biomedical Research in Epidemiology and Public Health, 28029 Madrid, Spain; Institute for Biosanitary Research (ibs.GRANADA), 18012 Granada, Spain.

Objective: Complementary and alternative medicine use and type of use may be influenced by sociodemographic and economic determinants through which we could identify characteristics of patients with greater trend to use it. This paper aims to describe the changes in the consumption of homeopathic and natural remedies in Spain for three time points in order to discern changes in rate of consumption, associated factors and whether their use has been affected by a period of economic recession.

Methods: This study utilized 2006, 2011 and 2017 cross-sectional data from the Spanish National Health Survey, a nationally representative survey of the population aged more than 15 years old and resident in Spain.
