Chitin degradation is a keystone process in the oceans, mediated by marine microorganisms with the help of several enzymes, mostly chitinases. Sediment, seawater, and filter-feeding marine invertebrates, such as sponges, are known to harbor chitin-degrading bacteria and are presumably hotspots for chitin turnover. Here, we employed an artificial selection process involving enrichment cultures derived from microbial communities associated with the marine sponge , its surrounding seawater and sediment, to select bacterial consortia capable of degrading raw chitin.

The novel hydrosoluble silver coordination polymer [Ag(NO)(μ-1κ;2',″-TPM)] () (TPM = tris(1-pyrazol-1-yl)ethanol) was obtained and characterized. While single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of compound disclosed an infinite 1D helical chain structure in the solid state, NMR analysis in polar solvents confirmed the mononuclear nature of compound in solution. A robust and efficient cellular response to lysosomal membrane damage prevents leakage from the lysosome lumen into the cytoplasm. This response is understood to happen through either lysosomal membrane repair or lysophagy. Here we report exocytosis as a third response mechanism to lysosomal damage, which is further potentiated when membrane repair or lysosomal degradation mechanisms are impaired.

Cutinase from is an enzyme that bridges functional properties between lipases and esterases, with applications in detergents, food processing, and the synthesis of fine chemicals. The purification procedure of recombinant cutinase from extracts is a well-established but time-consuming process, which involves a sequence of two anionic exchange chromatography steps followed by dialysis. Affinity chromatography is the most efficient method for protein purification, the major limitation of its use being often the availability of a ligand selective for a given target protein.

Biofilms provide an environment that protects microorganisms from external stresses such as nutrient deprivation, antibiotic treatments, and immune defences, thereby creating favorable conditions for bacterial survival and pathogenesis. Here we show that the RNA-binding protein and ribonuclease polynucleotide phosphorylase (PNPase) is a positive regulator of biofilm formation in the human pathogen Listeria monocytogenes, a major responsible for food contamination in food-processing environments. The PNPase mutant strain produces less biofilm biomass and exhibits an altered biofilm morphology that is more susceptible to antibiotic treatment.
